News: John Maine on the DL
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 11, 2009 10:42 pm

The Mets have put Mets RHP John Maine on the 15–day disabled list due to fatigue and weakness in his right shoulder.

Following the game, Omar Minaya told reporters that Maine had an MRI earlier in the week, which showed no structural damage.

Maine told reporters, ‘It’s no big deal,’ noting his shoulder is weak, there is fatigue, and ‘it’s dead.’

Maine said he believes he will only miss one start, maybe two, and he will begin a strengthening program in the next day or so.

He will be re-activated when he begins to get his strength back.

Minaya said the team will announce who will replace Maine on the roster and in the rotation at some point tomorrow.

Update, 6:50 am:

Fernando Nieve looks like the best option for Saturday against the Yankees, but Nelson Figueroa is on turn with the Bisons,” explains Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News.

This team just can’t escape the injury train. It’s kind of like 1987.

    • djshakes2 says:

At least in 1987 we were coming off of a world championship. We don’t deserve this from a karma standpoint.

  3. ToastyJoe says:

Turn out the lights, gents – the party’s over. Looking forward to 2010.

  4. metsfan1 says:

This is absolutely ridiculous. I am glad they were smart and didn’t jerk around risking serious damage but how is it that one team can suffer this many injuries. I mean we are 4 games out of first. This is the 2nd starter to go down in addition to a setup man, our 1B and SS. We should sign our first round pick out of High School and start him.

    • dulcetpine says:

      That is about time…

    • Blue_n_Orange says:

Well, now I’m really worried because when I hear things like “no big deal” at this point I’ve come to expect the absolute worst. Here’s to hoping I’m wrong.

  5. ToastyJoe says:

On the bright side, the Yankees just had probably their most soul-crushing regular season loss in years.

    • dave27 says:

I’m sure they will feel better when they are knocking everything out of their joke of a yard against whomever the spot starter is on Saturday.

    • derxmasta says:

are we so use to these losses like today that it no longer fazes us?
we can just brush it off.
a few yrs ago we were devasted and heart broken because we know we should have won.
today we go eh. we fought hard and it was a great game.

      • jamie_ says:

        you’re right. “we battled”.

I think dykstraw brought this up yesterday, but a lot of fans seem to be feeling a general malaise about the team. Like, yes we’re all watching and rooting, but does anyone really expect anything out of this particular squad of Mets? Therefore, battling and playing hard become more of an acceptable alternative to winning, and when we win, it’s something of a pleasant surprise. Well, maybe it’s not quite that bad. Yet.

  6. djshakes2 says:

More depressing news after a miserable loss. Who’s going to get the start? Maybe Nieve or the old standby Figueroa? I was thinking back to how awful things were a year ago at this time. There’s a lot of season left. I’m glad the Mets acted more responsibly with this injury. I almost feel bad for Manuel having to manage with this roster right now.

I would assume Figgy would take the spot, so we’d have Redding, Figgy and Livian back to back to back against Phils and Yanks. Ugh!!

If you would have told us we’d have those guys in the rotation, a lineup of Sheffield in the cleanup and Tatis at first, Santos at catcher, Cora at short, FMart in right…wow I think I would have cried…oh wait I am crying.

And the Yanks just got swept so I’m sure they’ll be in a good mood and will allow us to beat them up. Oh boy, this could get ugly and fast. Thank god the wildcard teams are all falling apart

My first thought was letting Stokes get the start, he hasn’t pitched at all out of the bullpen the past few games so he should be well rested. Lets see what he can do as a starter. Drop Takahasi for another bullpen arm, if a lefty can’t get lefties out, whats the point?

Then bring up Willy Mo or anyone else in Maine’s spot that can hit a fly ball 280 feet because thats all you need in yankee stadium. In the AL you can live with 1 less arm in the pen because you won’t have to worry about pulling the pitcher early for a pinch hitter, he can pitch until he’s done.

  8. nyj0126 says:

Let the wave of injuries start again… This team just can’t catch a break. The Mets may be playing tough and actually winning some of these tights ones, but they’re not winning enough. That Beltran ”error” and Wright ”technical error” were the reason we lost. It’s hard to expect much this year without some type of momentum change. I feel like we’re being managed by an absolute imbecile. The man has little to no baseball intelligent and proves it to us at least 2 or 3 times a week. Yet, I know he’s not going anywhere – this year. All I can say is keep fighting. Hopefully Maine only misses this start, plus the next two.

  9. nyj0126 says:

David Wright could break his knee, Johan Santana’s arm could get severed off, K-Rod could go blind and Beltran could mysteriously retire and Omar Minaya wouldn’t make an impacting transaction. It’s like he’s in fear of giving another Matt Lindstrom or Heath Bell.

  10. nyj0126 says:

The wild card is looking more realistic. Maybe within the next couple weeks we’ll get Maine and Reyes back. If we can, we’ll be alright. We’ll have enough to make a push. Maybe a month after that Delgado and Wagner’s name will start surfacing. The pitching hasn’t been the problem, even if Redding isn’t ideal as a 4. What we need are guy’s who can hit. I felt like this team could have went 17 innings before scoring another run. They’re not coming up at the right time. The Phillies got a good bullpen, but it’s not that great. Not to not score one freaking run in 8 IP in two days.

  11. KL15 says:

Man this sucks. Well at least they got out in front of this one.

  12. stickguy says:

If not stokes, isn’t Nieve still out there? He hasn’t pitched for a while. Just fire him up, and see how far he goes.

One or the other, as a tag team. 1st guy goes til hes gassed, then the 2nd one comes in.

Not a bad idea to get an OF up I guess, since Sheff will be DHing. ANd wily Mo could do that too.

Otherwise, probably figgy, unless they really want to push it, and reach down to AA for Holt!

    • theperfectgame says:

You’re probably just joking about Holt, but he’s not even an option. He rolled his ankle off the field a few days ago and missed his most recent scheduled start. Even the farm is getting in on the injury-mania!

  13. Agee's Catch says:

And you all thought I was nuts when I suggested trading for Cliff Lee.

Maine is injured. He hasn’t gone 7 all season. We need more from the top of our rotation

This week also confirms that we need a bomber. We could have made a play for both Dunn or Ibanez and passed on both

  14. steadyeddie says:

The good news is we are still 4 games over .500 and Redding was outstanding tonight.
Good pitchers and good hitters will become available and Omar is always on the lookout.
We can start to rebuilt with an eye on the future without giving up on the 2009 season.
We saw some great baseball the last few nights.
    Ya gotta believe, baby!

  15. Razor Shines says:

Can someone name an in-season move Omar has made that did not follow a taxi crash?

  16. Razor Shines says:

Pedro Martinez was consistently hitting 94mph in his workout yesterday. Just saying.

  17. JohnPacellasCap says:

You gotta start wondering about Maine’s dependability long term. Second straight season with “dead arm.” He hasn’t thrown an extraordinary amount of innings with almost 100 pitchers having thrown more so it’s not like that’s the reason. I just don’t recall other pitchers in the league going on the DL because of dead arm but I could be wrong. I know he had a bone spur last season but he’s 28 and it’s reaching the point where he has to show that he can stay healthy and actually deliver close to 200 innings each season. Maine has to show that he can stay on the field and pitch consistently from start to start or it’s time to focus on bringing guys in who can. Next season is make or break with him.

I hope he gets past it and starts to show the consistency because he has the talent but it’s frustrating for the team to lean so heavily on players where their dependability is in question. Besides Maine, signing Perez instead of Lowe (where Lowe’s main attribute is dependability), and bringing Delgado back thinking that he was going to give us a full season like the 2nd half of 2008, giving him a chunk of money and being aware that he has a questionable hip.

When these guys go down, which can’t be a surprise, we don’t have much payroll flexibility to get solid replacements. And we’re left rolling out a team in June like we had yesterday and expect to win consistently.

  18. MrMustSeeTv says:

I think it’s time the Mets re-evaluated their medical and training staff. I know Matt made mention of this earlier this week, but it’s true. The way these guys are trained, rehabbed and diagnosed is comical.

I don’t understand how the Wilpons don’t see this as a major issue considering these people are handling their $140M investment. If I took my car to a mechanic and it continued to break down, then I’d find a new mechanic. No?

    • jamie_ says:

well, it depends on which parts are breaking down. If my mechanic told me I had an older muffler that was past its prime, and that I might want to replace it but I don’t…well, that’s not the mechanic’s fault. A lot of it rests on the players too, letting someone know they’re hurting.
