You're probably just joking about Holt, but he's not even an option. He rolled his ankle off the field a few days ago and missed his most recent scheduled start. Even the farm is getting in on the injury-mania!

well, it depends on which parts are breaking down. If my mechanic told me I had an older muffler that was past its prime, and that I might want to replace it but I don't...well, that's not the mechanic's fault. A lot of it rests on the players too, letting someone know they're hurting.

Well, now I'm really worried because when I hear things like "no big deal" at this point I've come to expect the absolute worst. Here's to hoping I'm wrong.

I think it's time the Mets re-evaluated their medical and training staff. I know Matt made mention of this earlier this week, but it's true. The way these guys are trained, rehabbed and diagnosed is comical.

I don't understand how the Wilpons don't see this as a major issue considering these people are handling their $140M investment. If I took my car to a mechanic and it continued to break down, then I'd find a new mechanic. No?

You gotta start wondering about Maine's dependability long term. Second straight season with "dead arm." He hasn't thrown an extraordinary amount of innings with almost 100 pitchers having thrown more so it's not like that's the reason. I just don't recall other pitchers in the league going on the DL because of dead arm but I could be wrong. I know he had a bone spur last season but he's 28 and it's reaching the point where he has to show that he can stay healthy and actually deliver close to 200 innings each season. Maine has to show that he can stay on the field and pitch consistently from start to start or it's time to focus on bringing guys in who can. Next season is make or break with him.

I hope he gets past it and starts to show the consistency because he has the talent but it's frustrating for the team to lean so heavily on players where their dependability is in question. Besides Maine, signing Perez instead of Lowe (where Lowe's main attribute is dependability), and bringing Delgado back thinking that he was going to give us a full season like the 2nd half of 2008, giving him a chunk of money and being aware that he has a questionable hip.

When these guys go down, which can't be a surprise, we don't have much payroll flexibility to get solid replacements. And we're left rolling out a team in June like we had yesterday and expect to win consistently.

you're right. "we battled".

I think dykstraw brought this up yesterday, but a lot of fans seem to be feeling a general malaise about the team. Like, yes we're all watching and rooting, but does anyone really expect anything out of this particular squad of Mets? Therefore, battling and playing hard become more of an acceptable alternative to winning, and when we win, it's something of a pleasant surprise. Well, maybe it's not quite that bad. Yet.

The good news is we are still 4 games over .500 and Redding was outstanding tonight.
Good pitchers and good hitters will become available and Omar is always on the lookout.
We can start to rebuilt with an eye on the future without giving up on the 2009 season.
We saw some great baseball the last few nights.
Ya gotta believe, baby!
