News: Pre Game Notes from Citi Field
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 11, 2009 4:56 pm

Fernando Martinez will start in right field tonight, in place of Ryan Church, against Jamie Moyer.

Luis Castillo will again bat leadoff, followed in order by Alex Cora, Carlos Beltran, Gary Sheffield, David Wright, Fernando Tatis at first base, Martinez, Omir Santos and Tim Redding.

murphy did not start a single game in this series with the Phillies…

…by the way, like Ted Berg and i discussed this afternoon, i wonder if a talk-radio topic will soon be batting wright leadoff, seeing as he has a near .500 OBP and is on pace to steal 45 bases

Update, 5:00 pm:

John Maine told reporters today his shoulder still hurts, ‘a bit,’ but he’s probably just run down from working so hard during rehab from his shoulder surgery in the off season.

That said, in a post to Twitter, Newsday’s David Lennon wrote, “Maine may need tests on his right shoulder depending on his performance Saturday.”

However, Jerry Manuel later told reporters the issue with Maine’s shoulder is nothing serious.

that’s fine, i guess, but if maine needs to see a doctor, why is he pitching… here we go again, folks… get ready…

Update, 5:07 pm:

Carlos Delgado talked to reporters before today’s game and said he is feeling strong, and will begin to be more aggressive in his rehab during the weeks ahead.

According to Adam Rubin, in a post to his blog for the Daily News, “Delgado said he can already tell he’s improved, since he doesn’t have the pre-surgery pinching sensation.”

Later on Twitter, Lennon wrote, “Delgado appears to be in great shape. Still healing… I think he’ll be back on time.”

by the way, CarlosDelgado21 on Twitter is the real delgado much to the team’s dismay, from what i can gather…

Update, 5:10 pm:

The Rangers signed free-agent Orlando Hernandez to a minor league deal, according to MLB.com.

Update, 6:08 pm:

According to Bart Hubbuch in a post to Twitter, the tarp is down at Citi Field.

Update, 6:29 pm:

The tarp is now off the field according to Hubbuch in his post to Twitter.

    No rest for the Shef

  2. jesse52782 says:

I gotta think he would much rather get the night off tonight and play the yankees tomorrow…

Matt, what are the chances this game gets played?

  3. wright5murph28 says:

jerry seems to not have much confidence in murphy and church…alot of people think the only reason church played the last 2 days is cause the mets are trying to showcase him..which prob means he wouldnt be playing if they werent looking to trade him

    • stickguy says:

      Jerrys a lousy manager.

      • J.R. says:

I just don’t get this. Its Jamie Moyer, not Randy Johnson circa 2000. This is a great opportunity to rest Sheff. Who cares if the lineup is “too” lefty against Jamie Moyer….I’m not trying to say Moyer isn’t good, but he doesn’t exactly strike fear into hitters.

        Another 2 things to consider:

        1) Redding doesn’t miss too many bats….I’d rather have 4 fresh legs out there then 3

        2) Church looks like he’s actually discovering that elusive clue at the plate

Little things like this….not going make a huge difference in the end, but its like death by a thousand cuts

  4. stickguy says:

I think they are pushing Sheff (a dangerous move, who knows when his leg blows) since he is going to DH over the weekend. He can take it easy rounding the bases after his pop up HRs.

They will play, but could hit a delay. Supposed to be a 40% chance of showers, or T Storms, but I don’t believe steady rain.

  5. derxmasta says:

Everytime Jerry says his partially injured players are “fine” i cringe
first it was delgado will be fine in a couple of days
reyes will DEFINATELY be back by tuesday
    now maine is fine.
how can anybody still believe anything he says thats medical related?

  6. irishchris87 says:

Really have to start considering sending Murphy to AAA. Glad to see Martinez in there, but like everyone else, I’d rather have Church in there over Sheffield and give him a day off, plus leave a RH bat on the bench for late in the game.

Also, with Redding on the mound, I’d rather have 3 quality defensive OF out there. Sheffield has been steady defensively, Church/Martinez or even Reed for pete’s sake blow him out of the water in that dept.

  7. noyha says:

I really do not understand why Manual decided to not to play Murphy. Granted, he has been slumping but so is Tatis. It is obvious now that Jerry dislike Church from being out today and letting Sherf play instead. I can understand that DH is going to be used. But Manual needs to also rest Wright and Beltran for few days too.

  8. thedude says:

Makes no sense playing Sheff tonight. Diminishing returns is really setting in with that guy playing every day.

And I don’t really care about Murphy, because he’s not a big-time prospect, so whether they stunt his long-term growth or not is irrelevant.

  9. wynton says:

I am really irritated by the way they are jerking around Murphy. What happened to Jerry saying before the series that he would start one of these games?

Didn’t he get a couple of hits during his last start?

Are they purposely trying to play with the kid’s mind?

If he’s not going to play, send him to the minors already.

  10. Patrick says:

Jerry has lost me. He is trying really hard to play it all safe and by the book.

    • stickguy says:

That’s what happens when you are worried about your job. Go ultra conservative, so if it doesn’t work, no one can accuse yo uof making a bad move.

  11. KL15 says:

Someone PLEASE explain this to me. If John Maine’s SURGICALY REPAIRED shoulder is hurting at all, WHY IS HE PITCHING? Especially when Nelson Figueroa is over in Buffalo. Jerry Manuel has to go! Plain and simple. This man is the definition of loser. He obviously doesn’t support the players, when have you seen him argue a call? He takes losing entirely too well, just listen to the post game press conferences after a loss. And he seems to be more concerned with playing “his boys” than putting the best team on the field. There seems to be a reason he lost his job in Chicago and now we are seeing it. Please uderstand everyone, like all of you, I want this team to win so bad it kills me and I don’t think this man can take them there.

    • steadyeddie says:

Mr KL, I don’t thing Jerry makes that call by himself.
      John is a great competitor.
      And he’s young.

  12. MikeIckes says:

And why are the Mets opposed to Carlos being on Twitter? That makes no sense to me!

  13. dave27 says:

Why is Murphy not starting an issue when two lefties were on the mound?

And Sheffield is facing 6 straight DH games in NY and Baltimore, so he can be pushed. Better to try to get the bat heated up again.

  14. Razor Shines says:

“…by the way, like Ted Berg and i discussed this afternoon, i wonder if a talk-radio topic will soon be batting wright leadoff, seeing as he has a near .500 OBP and is on pace to steal 45 bases…”

With Sheffield batting ahead of him, Wright essentially has been leading off more innings than not lately.

  15. Don Logan says:

If it wasn’t for the fact that they don’t want Tatis at 1b every day, I’d say there’s no reason for Murphy to even be on the team at this point. Are they really going to miss his .240 batting average and his nightly error? He should be playing everyday in Triple A where he can actually learn a position b/c at this pace, he’s never going to be a good fielder and might as well be a piece used in a deal with an American League team. I do have my doubts he can ever field a position well enough to stay in the National League.
I’m not so sure Reed would be any worse at first and, this is just my opinion, but I think Reed is better than both Church and Murphy if given the opportunity to play regularly.

  16. JohnPacellasCap says:

Tatis is batting in .238 against lefties and Murphy is slightly better than that. Granted that it’s a small sample size but I don’t get the push to keep Tatis in the line-up everyday. Murphy needs to play regularly to see if he’s a full-time player after this season. We already know what Tatis is. Also, Sheff needs to sit, lefty or no lefty. He’s 40, already looks run down and just isn’t hitting. Hopefully he’ll pick it back up DHing a number of games coming up but we’re asking too much of him right now and he just isn’t hitting.

  17. stickguy says:

just started pouring in S> Jersey. if this tracks toward Queens, this game will at minimum be delayed.

And if it is a wet field, even more reason to sit Sheff.

  18. steadyeddie says:

Mets are getting all the mileage they can from Sheff. He is a legit threat and we don’t have many!
Let’s face it, over the next few weeks the Orioles, Indians, Royals, Nationals, Padres, Rockies, Diamondbacks and perhaps the Marlins (to name a few) will look to dump some big contracts.
I remember a road trip in 1969 when the Mets were humiliated in The Dome (as usual) and the nah sayers began to doubt the miracle run.
Don’t give up my friends! It’s baseball, man…

  19. ravi3 says:

To change gears a little bit, if the Mets can stay within striking distance of the Phils (no more than 3 games back), they will be in a very good position as they get their guys back. They may have been playing fairly well lately, but it goes without saying that they are better with Delgado, Reyes, and yes, even Perez. As long as they can keep it close, they have every chance to go on a nice run in August/September, particularly if they can get back guys like Putz and Wagner to reinforce the pen. I don’t know if Parnell has the stamina to last the whole season while being on top of his game, so those two will be key….Lets go Mets!
