Post Game: Mets 6, Yankees 2

by Michael Baron on June 13th, 2009 at 8:47 pm

The Mets defeated the Yankees by a score of 6-to-2 this afternoon.

For a complete recap, box score and stats, click here.

The Least You Should Know:

  • Fernando Nieve allowed just two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings to earn the victory, consistently in the mid 90s with his fastball.
  • Luis Castillo went 2 for 5 and fielded his position well to bounce back nicely from Friday night.
  • Omir Santos went 2 for 3 with a double and home run with 3 RBI.
  • Gary Sheffield hit another home run and had two RBI despite playing with pain in his knee. He now has two home runs in the series.
  • David Wright raised his Major League leading average to .365 with a 2 for 5 effort.
  • Ryan Church continued his resurgence going 2 for 4.
  • Fernando Martinez went 3 for 4 at the plate to break a 2 for 16 skid.

Other Observations and Notes:

  • The Mets showed no ill effects from Friday night’s meltdown as they pounded out 17 hits in a clean and crisp win.
  • Another great day for the bullpen. Remember how bad Sean Green was early on?
  • Fernando Nieve looked electric today.
  • Omir Santos continues to impress at the plate.
  • Even David Wright’s outs are being hit hard right now. He is hitting an even .500 (21 for 42) in the month of June with six doubles and six RBI.

Johan Santana faces AJ Burnett in the rubber game of this three game series tomorrow at 1:05 pm at Yankee Stadium.

Opinion: Keep on Truckin

by Matthew Cerrone on June 13th, 2009 at 9:53 am

According to my e-mail inbox, the comments on this blog and others, talk radio, etc., the mood among Mets fans today is one of despair, shame and frustration.

Frustration with the team, frustration with being laughed at, and frustration that we, the fans, keep believing and yet keep being disappointed.

I’ll keep trucking on, of course, and I believe others will do the same… but, I will not lie, today is painful.

4:05 pm can’t get here fast enough, so i can move on…

In a post to Mets Merized Online, Doug Branch simply says, “I’m speechless, my friends.  In over 40 years of watching baseball I never witnessed a player costing his team the game by flubbing a routine pop up… The Mets invent new ways each game to torture their fan base.”

I’m the same way, Doug.  Though, I am more confused by why Castillo threw to second, instead of going home, as the winning run was trying to score, following the dropped pop up.  I guess he was just disoriented.

That said, Francisco Rodriguez didn’t have to let Derek Jeter grind out that hit, and he didn’t have to throw three straight balls to Mark Teixeira… and, how many runners did the Mets leave on base, and how many runs did their pitching allow?  No one game ever comes down to one single player, no matter how you slice it.

“We by no means will ostracize the player,” Jerry Manuel told reporters following last night’s game.  “We will stick together. We’re a team. We win together. We lose together. We’ll have to fight through this. This will be a very difficult thing for us, but I think we have enough time to overcome it.”

Sure, there is a chance the entire team feels defeated today, like no matter what they do it will not matter, because the Gods of Baseball are just not on their side – I know lots of fans are feeling this way.

Or, this turn in events could be a positive, in that Castillo got a lot of support from his teammates last night. From what I can gather this morning, people had his back, from the manager to David Wright to Carlos Beltran to Johan Santana; they all supported him in the press, and did so quietly, one-on-one in the locker room.

So, maybe, just maybe, this helps further unite them as a ‘team,’ assuming they can pick each other up, again, and fight on.

Post Game: Yankees 9, Mets 8

by Michael Baron on June 13th, 2009 at 7:33 am

The Mets lost to the Yankees by the score of 9 to 8 last night.

For a complete recap, box score and stats, click here.

The Least You Should Know:

  • With two outs in the ninth inning, Luis Castillo dropped an easy pop up by Alex Rodriguez, costing the Mets a dramatic victory and ending Francisco Rodriguez‘ streak of 16 consecutive saves.
  • David Wright‘s clutch go ahead double to score Carlos Beltran in the top of the eighth inning raised his National League’s leading average to .364 (2 for 4 on the night).
  • Jon Switzer made his Mets’ debut and gave up a three run homerun to Hideki Matsui in the sixth inning.
  • Sean Green did another outstanding job out of the bullpen, going 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief despite allowing two walks.
  • Ryan Church contributed 3 RBI while going 1 for 4.

Other Observations and Notes:

  • Of all of the lapses and mistakes that this team has made, whether it is on the basepaths or at the plate or in the field, Castillo’s dropped pop up takes the cake.
  • I assume Jon Switzer’s job is to get left handed hitters out.  Well, he didn’t exactly do that last night.
  • Fernando Martinez looks lost at the plate.
  • I hope Jerry Manuel is starting to like Ryan Church. He has done nothing but hit since his return from the DL.
  • David Wright is definitely a clutch hitter.

Fernando Nieve faces off against Andy Pettitte in Game Two this afternoon at 4:10 pm at Yankee Stadium.
