Post Game: Mets 6, Orioles 4

by Michael Baron on June 16th, 2009 at 10:09 pm

The Mets defeated the Orioles by a score of 6-to-4 tonight.

For a complete recap, box score and stats, click here.

The Least You Should Know:

  • The Mets broke a 14 inning scoreless streak with a four run fourth inning.
  • Mike Pelfrey allowed two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings after retiring the first 11 batters he faced to earn his first victory since May 7.
  • The Mets took advantage of three Baltimore errors, scoring three unearned runs.
  • With his 2 for 5 at the plate tonight, David Wright now owns an 11 game hitting streak and is 24 for 43 (.558) over that stretch.
  • Alex Cora was 3 for 5 with a run scored out of the leadoff spot.
  • Brian Schneider went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
  • Sean Green retired all five batters he faced in relief of Pelfrey.
  • After Bobby Parnell allowed back to back hits to start the ninth, Francisco Rodriguez managed to limit the damage, striking out two to earn his 17th save despite allowing two walks.

Other Observations and Notes:

  • Francisco Rodriguez walked the tight rope in the ninth inning, but got the job done once again. It doesn’t always have to be pretty.
  • Mike Pelfrey was sharp early on but he appeared to lose command of his pitches in the fifth inning. Over his last 1 2/3 innings pitched, he threw 43 pitches.
  • Wright was seen speaking firmly to Pelfrey in the dugout during the seventh inning.
  • Sean Green has not allowed a run in the month of June and has a 2.04 ERA since May 2nd.
  • Despite the victory, it was alarming to see the Mets not running out pop ups and advancing on errant throws by the outfield. Little things…

Tim Redding faces Koji Uehara in the second game of this three game series tomorrow at 7:05 pm at Camden Yards.

Note: Bobby V On Air with ESPN 1050

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2009 at 5:37 pm

In an interview with ESPN 1050’s Michael Kay, Bobby Valentine said he has not heard form a major-league team this season.

He said he is confident, if he decides to interview for a job in MLB next season, he will be able to find a team to work for.

Valentine said he has been offered jobs by MLB teams during the last few years, but he has been under contract in Japan.

Lastly, asked if he would ever manage the Mets again, Valentine was sure to say Jerry Manuel is a good manager for this team.

However, he also said his departure from the Mets was ‘not bad at all,’ and said, essentially, the ‘personalities’ who he had issues with, and who had issues with him, are no longer with the organization.

To listen to to Valentine’s entire interview, go to 1050 ESPN Radio.

Buzz: Nationals asking for a Boat Load

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

The Nationals are the only team that is likely to make a deal before the all-star break, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said in a recent interview with WFAN, which you can listen to here.

According to Heyman, citing people around the league, the Nationals are asking for a ‘boat load,’ in exchange for Adam Dunn and Nick Johnson.

…if you recall, the buzz from baseball a few weeks back had been that the Nationals were asking for Bobby Parnell from the Mets, or Manny Delcarmen from the Red Sox, in a deal for johnson

Heyman says Mets people have acknowledged to him that Dunn is one of the few players who could consistently hit the ball out of Citi Field.

To listen to Heyman’s entire interview, during which he talks about Jerry Manuel, Bobby Valentine, the Yankees, and other topics from around MLB, go to WFAN.com.

Stats: David Wright’s Unique Season

by Matthew Cerrone on June 16th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

David Wright is hitting .364 in 60 games this season, and is on pace to finish the year with over 160 strike outs, 10 HR, roughly 100 RBI and 45 stolen bases.

According to Jayson Stark, and his Useless Info Department on ESPN.com, “No .360 hitter in history has even whiffed 100 times, let alone 161.”

by the way, a few weeks ago, i argued that wright wasn’t struggling to hit in Citi Field… despite his home and away splits… i argued he was just a streaky hitter, and it so happened that the deep parts of his slumps had occured during parts of the team’s home series… wright is in the middle of one of his hot streaks, and is now batting .312 in Citi Field, while batting .414 on the road… i am more and more convinced that he’s a streaky hitter, who works hot and cold in what seem to be 10 to 20 game clusters

Wright is batting .524 in his last 11 games.

He hit .190 in the 12 games before that, he hit .418 in the 20 games before that, and .271 in the 20 games before that.
