Buzz: Nationals asking for a Boat Load

The Nationals are the only team that is likely to make a deal before the all-star break, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said in a recent interview with WFAN, which you can listen to here.

According to Heyman, citing people around the league, the Nationals are asking for a ‘boat load,’ in exchange for Adam Dunn and Nick Johnson.

…if you recall, the buzz from baseball a few weeks back had been that the Nationals were asking for Bobby Parnell from the Mets, or Manny Delcarmen from the Red Sox, in a deal for johnson

Heyman says Mets people have acknowledged to him that Dunn is one of the few players who could consistently hit the ball out of Citi Field.

To listen to Heyman’s entire interview, during which he talks about Jerry Manuel, Bobby Valentine, the Yankees, and other topics from around MLB, go to WFAN.com.

No one – and I mean NO ONE showed the slightest interest in Dunn last offseason. And that’s after the Reds had to take 25 cents of the dollar just to pawn him off on a DBack team totally desperate for offense. How in the world do they think they are going to get a ‘boatload’ for a guy no one wanted and who now comes with an $8MM price tag? What planet are they on?

the Nationals are the worst run franchise in professional sports, and I am Knicks fans in exile.

Johnson is not worth more than a B level prospect based on his history and pending free agency.

Dunn hardly is either as he would be a guy traded in the first year of a long term deal who could then by the CBA get out of his deal this off season.

Dunn just has a 1-yr contract w/ the Nats

Dunn’s is in year 1 of a 2 yr / $20 million contract.

The Nats are trying to unload both to save salary so that they can sign their number one pitching prospect prior to the August deadline.

I wouldn’t mind either player in a salary dump as long as the Mets don’t unload top prospects. If the Mets took a package that could lighten the Nats salary load, they can’t expect a ton back especially for an injury ridden Johnson. Offer some mid-level prospects and if don’t take it know that the peitcher won’t sign in DC and won’t be killing us for years to come.

If anyone here isnt satisfied with Wrights hitting in late and close situations, wait till you get to see Adam Dunn. Ive never, ever seen this guy hit when he’s needed the most.

I would hate to see us lose Parnell. He is a future star closer and a dependable 8th inning guy as long as we have K-Rod.

McNulty June 16, 2009 at 5:04 pm

I want no part of Dunn. He strikes out too much, clogs the bases, and he is the worst defensive player in baseball. I don’t think its a coincidence that Dunn has been on bad teams his entire career.

McNulty, I think you’ve been hitting the Jameson a little early today.

Bunk would like a word to describe why Dunn is a great fit.

Neither one of these players are worth a “boat load” and it makes me laugh that a joke franchise like the Washington Natinals (uniform refernece) are asking for it. Please Omar do not trade for either of these guys. They are barely worth B prospects, much less Bobby Parnell. I’d rather just call the rest of this season a wash than trade good prospects for a couple of scrap heaps. Especially one that can’t actually play ball and one that is a DL all-star.

First thing I would do if I were the GM is go to Beltran and ask him who we should trade for. I have a strong recall that Beltran wanted Ibanez. I’m pretty sure that was a good call-

I wish Matt would ask Beltran this very question for us loyal Metsblog followers.

this couldve been avoided by signing dunn this offseason, but omar was too busy patting himself on the back for putz/krod.

Hindsight is 20//20. Besides the fact that the majority of fans wanted nothing to do with Dunn, Omar had said they weren’t making major moves after K-Rod/Putz due to budget considerations.

At the same time, it would have been great if Omar actually did pursue Ibanez, a New York native, as he was linked to the team. However, Philly got him on a 3 year deal. He may be a guy who wears down in the coming years. I did check to see if he served as a DH at all over the last few years as a rest from playing the field, but it turns out he has been in left every game he was in over the past 3 years.
