Health: Sheffield’s MRI, Jose’s Shoes, etc…

“The Mets now say Gary Sheffield will continue to play on his sore right knee after an exam by team doctors Sunday at Yankee Stadium showed the 41-year-old slugger didn’t need an MRI exam,” writes Bart Hubbuch in the New York Post.

the thing i don’t get is, how can the MRI hurt… you’d think the Mets would have one of these machines in the clubhouse at this point… you know, game over, shower, MRI, go home

Speaking of injuries, in a recent report for FoxSports.com, Ken Rosenthal says people within the organization wonder if Jose Reyes’s leg injury might be from switching shoe companies, going from Nike to Under Armour, at the start of spring training.

According to Rosenthal, “Under Armour is preparing a special model for Reyes, but it was not ready for the start of the season.”

from what i can gather, reyes is waiting for therapy to take hold before starting a more vigorous rehab… meanwhile, Carlos Delgado should begin his road back in the next week or so; and John Maine has joined Oliver Perez is in St. Lucie, where maine has started a throwing program

ugh…no MRI…here we go again…what are the odds he gets one within 2 weeks?

metfan435 June 16, 2009 at 10:47 am

Do the Mets actually have a real team Dr. or just a guy who stayed at a Holiday Inn Express? I agree with Matt what would an MRI hurt? They had an off day get this thing looked at.

dwright5_godsend June 16, 2009 at 11:14 am

With what this team is going through, they might just need Dr. Phil

Patrick June 16, 2009 at 10:50 am

There is no defending not taking an MRI.

starz31 June 16, 2009 at 10:52 am

maybe they dont want to know something is wrong. that way, we can keep him playing and not deal with media scrutiny if he’s playing with a torn ligament, for example.

Rorschach June 16, 2009 at 11:12 am

LOL, that’s so much better and the MRI.

metsfan1 June 16, 2009 at 10:51 am

Some of the Mets medical information reminds me of that Doctor from 30 Rock. I mean we have a 40 year old guy complaining of pain in his knee. What can a doctor do by feeling his knee? How about getting it examined.

I guess the Mets are preparing for Universal Healthcare under Obama by not providing MRI’s.

Keep politics away from this board.

Agee's Catch June 16, 2009 at 10:53 am

I’m calling for a sweep this week

Hubie June 16, 2009 at 11:02 am

Unless we are playing the Nats, we are not sweeping anyone with this roster.

Rorschach June 16, 2009 at 11:11 am

I am not so sure the mets would sweep the Nats right now.

ericloz June 16, 2009 at 11:08 am

By who?

Rorschach June 16, 2009 at 11:10 am

Agreed Agee’s. The mets will be swept this week.

I was th9inking about this driving in to work this morning, and it is strange but true, that the “mid-season injury call up” that I most hopeful about is Ollie.

I will not beleive that Reyes will be effective until/unless he proves it, due to the fact that his game is so dependent on his legs.

I am hopeful about Delgado, but am also concerned that we are just as likely to see 1st half 2008 Delgado as we are to see 2nd half 2008 Delgado. He was slow to come back from injury last time, and he is a year older not younger this time around.

Fact is that Ollie’s problems are more between his ears than anywhere else. Ollie has historically been a big game pitcher, and the fact is every start he gets down the stretch is likely to be a big game. I can see this guy coming back, with an attitude, that can be infectous in a positive way.

Rorschach June 16, 2009 at 11:14 am

I agree about Reyes and Delgado…. Not so much about Ollie. He is too much of a head case to come through this year. I just don’t trust him. He is WAY to inconsistent to put our faith in him.

dap260 June 16, 2009 at 11:19 am

Agreed – which is why is said “hope” not faith!

AndrewMichaelZ June 16, 2009 at 11:19 am

I hope you’re right dap, but it is hard to expect a lot from Ollie. He ought to spend some time with Pelf’s sports psychologist. If he can just get it together we all know that he can be effective.

In no way should the team rely on him but what a boost it’d be if he did come back with a healthy body and mind. With the way the back end of the rotation has stepped up the pen could end up real strong down the stretch.

Back to Shef and his infamous non-MRI, I just continued to be baffled by this team. One thing is for sure: the Mets organization would do well in the NFL or NHL where injury disclosure is at a minimum.

dap260 June 16, 2009 at 11:23 am

I think the reality is that every time the Mets have a doctor look at one of their players, the red light bulb on the players nose goes off and we lose them.

The simply are not going to play “Operation” with them anymore, and will just run them out there until they collapse. Maybe it will end up being like the Jetsons, and when Sheffield finally collapses they will send little robots out to sweep up the remains….

thekid024 June 16, 2009 at 11:26 am

Generally Ollies problems are in his head. This season I’m not sure though, his velocity was down considerably in all his starts and spring training. Some thing was wrong beyond him being his usual lackadaisical self. His control is never great even when he is on but when hes missing 5 mph off his fastball and misses toward the middle he gets hit hard. Hopefully he finds that extra velocity in rehab.

dwright5_godsend June 16, 2009 at 11:25 am

I don’t know guys, looks like the baseball gods just don’t want us to win one this year. Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, Maine, Perez, Cora, Pagan, Church, Schneider, and now possibly Sheffield?

No team can withstand that many injuries…no matter how much some of you want it to be, this is NOT Omar’s fault.

However, I think the medical staff should be wiped clean this offseason. They’ve done a decent job in keeping guys like Reyes, Wright, Beltran, and Delgado healthy for the last two or three years, but the way they have handled the plethora of injuries this season is just appalling.

wlaadair June 16, 2009 at 11:42 am

The only core player who has managed to stay off the DL the last 2 years is Wright, but we all know full well that it would take a major catastrophe to knock him out of commission for more than one game at a time.

theperfectgame June 16, 2009 at 11:37 am

Really? They’re gonna blame Reyes’ injury on the fact that he wasn’t wearing special, custom-made spikes? Wow…

Rorschach June 16, 2009 at 11:39 am

I know… ridiculous.

wlaadair June 16, 2009 at 11:43 am

The shoe thing is crazy, i don’t buy it at all, but excuses will run rampant until he comes back at full strength, whenever that may be.
