Health: Vintage Johan throws a Bullpen

By Matthew Cerrone on Jun 18, 2009, 9:17 am

Prior to yesterday’s game, Johan Santana threw a 47-pitch bullpen session, which Dan Warthen called it ‘vintage Johan,’ according to SNY’s Pre Game Live.

“I thought he was excellent,” Warthen is quoted as saying by the New York Post.  “I think we have most everything figured out.  He got his deception back and his velocity back.”

Warthen explained Santana will now bring his hand from his glove more quickly, so not to make him catapult his throwing arm.

i have no idea what that means, but i think this is exactly what Joe Janish was talking about on Mets Today the other day

Speaking of working back to form…

Also, according to SNY, OF Angel Pagan could play in a minor-league rehab game this week, as he works back from groin injury.

Have we as a fanbase really been reduced to getting excited about bullpen sessions? And considering that J.J. Putz also had a great bullpen session right before he went on the DL, I’m not so sure this is great news.

Saturday should be interesting as the Rays don’t give away any runs like the O’s. They are also a disciplined hitting team

of all things, the thought of getting pagan back is really good news.

So we’re now reduced to having to be excited about a “vintage” bullpen session. Johan must have really been keeping the bullpen catcher off balance with his deception. Hank Hill changing Johan’s delivery scares the crap out of me.

J.J Putz had a great bullpen session as well and he went on to give up like four runs in an outing.

It is great that Pagan is working his way back, he does add a lot to the lineup when he is healthy.

He has come through with a lot of clutch hits and has good speed, but with a groin injury you do have to proceed with caution.

David Wright strained his groin last year on July 3rd but played through it, good thing for the Mets.

    Let’s not underestimate Pagan’s value.

When he’s on the field (and injuries seem to be his problem), he adds a lot to this team.

Until Santana’s arm breaks off and is twitching on the grass between the mound and the plate, I’ll have faith in him as the ace of our team.

I was never truly concerned with Johan anyway, this man is a competitor. Now if we could only pump some of Johan’s blood into some of these other guys….

I’ll rest assured when Johan mops up the floor on Saturday, prior to that I threw a great bullpen this morning.
