Read: Today in the NL East

by Joe Hamrahi on June 18th, 2009 at 10:55 am

Adam Dunn hit a monstrous home run, and Long Island native John Lannan allowed just two runs over 8 1/3 innings as the Washington Nationals held on to beat the Yankees, 3-2.

…And yes, Manny Acta is still the Washington manager

Elsewhere, the Blue Jays pounded the Phillies, 7-1, the Reds dropped the Braves 4-3, and Brad Penny led the Red Sox over his former club, the Marlins, 6-1.

…The Mets remain three games behind the Phillies, but they obviously lost a golden opportunity to pick up ground on their division rivals.

After last night Philadelphia starting pitchers now have an ERA of 5.38 this season.

Jamie Moyer got shelled again, giving up six runs over six innings

According to CBSSports.com, the Phillies are 2-10-1 in home series thus far.  But, of course, they have the best road record in the league.

Minors: Last Night in the Minor Leagues

by Jon Schneider on June 18th, 2009 at 10:50 am

This morning, at Mets Minor League Blog, Toby Hyde recaps all of yesterday’s Mets minor-league action. Double-A Binghamton took a loss last night, but not before SP Jennry Mejia struck out eight over five innings, allowing only two earned runs.

In a win for Single-A St. Lucie, pitcher Dylan Owen went seven innings allowing zero earned runs. CF Kirk Nieuwenhuis contributed with a double and a home run, giving him nine bombs on the year.

And lets not forget about our favorite 17-year-old SS Wilmer Flores, who went 2-4 with a triple in a win in Single-A Savannah.

Links: Rivalries, Recaps, Prospects and Managers

by Matthew Cerrone on June 18th, 2009 at 10:02 am

In the Sun Sentinel, Sarah Talalay looks at the impact New York baseball fans have on rivalries in South Florida.

Rich Resch explains on Hot Foot why the Mets off-season was a ‘bust,’ saying, ‘any 12–year-old playing Fantasy Baseball could have figured out the bullpen needed to be fixed.’

Michael Ganci, of the Daily Stache, says, “I’m not in love with Jerry Manuel, but I think he is a far better manager than Bobby Valentine.”

By the way, if you’re interested in writing for Ganci’s blog, click here.

“Is Jenrry Mejia our best pitching prospect,” asks Ed Ryan of Mets Fever.

yes, in that he is a true prospect… he and Brad Holt there is no question about it, ed

Dave Singer of NY Sports Dog points out that the Mets have the second-most losses by a bullpen in the NL, despite leading the league in bullpen ERA.

Health: Vintage Johan throws a Bullpen

by Matthew Cerrone on June 18th, 2009 at 9:17 am

Prior to yesterday’s game, Johan Santana threw a 47-pitch bullpen session, which Dan Warthen called it ‘vintage Johan,’ according to SNY’s Pre Game Live.

“I thought he was excellent,” Warthen is quoted as saying by the New York Post.  “I think we have most everything figured out.  He got his deception back and his velocity back.”

Warthen explained Santana will now bring his hand from his glove more quickly, so not to make him catapult his throwing arm.

i have no idea what that means, but i think this is exactly what Joe Janish was talking about on Mets Today the other day

Speaking of working back to form…

Also, according to SNY, OF Angel Pagan could play in a minor-league rehab game this week, as he works back from groin injury.

Quote: Tatis Should Have Had a Hit

by Matthew Cerrone on June 18th, 2009 at 8:53 am

In the sixth inning, and the Mets down two runs, O’s RHP Brian Bass let up a solo home run to Gary Sheffield, then loaded the bases.

Left-handed reliever Mark Hendrickson entered the game for the Orioles, and walked Alex Cora to bring in the tying run.

Jerry Manuel pinch hit Fernando Tatis for Fernando Martinez, who had hit the ball to the outfield in two previous at bats, including a ground-rule double.

…i probably would have let the kid hit, despite their being a left-handed pitcher on the mound, only because he had been looking good at the plate…

…however, i understand pulling him, considering how tatis has been clutch in the past – though not so much this season – and martinez had been struggling in general, plus the lefty

However, Tatis, with a 2–0 count, against a pitcher who just walked in the tying run, swung, and hit in to an inning-ending double play.

In 39 at bats this season, Tatis is batting .128 with runners in scoring position.

He hit .392 with runners in scoring position last season.

“They played me very well,” Tatis told reporters following the game.  “That ball that I hit should be a base hit… Brian Roberts played right next to the base.  I hit that ball pretty good.”

…well, i mean, i guess every ball should be a base hit… except for those pesky fielders with those fancy gloves

Jerry Manuel agreed, telling reporters essentially the same thing, adding, “That was a big play for them.”

Quote: Schneider wanted Feliciano’s Slider

by Matthew Cerrone on June 18th, 2009 at 8:34 am

Left-handed batters entered last night’s game hitting .125 against Pedro Feliciano, who had allowed just one run in his last 21 appearances.

Last night, however, in a tie game, during the seventh inning, Feliciano gave up a single to the left-handed hitting Nick Markakis and a two-run home run to the left-handed hitting Aubrey Huff, which were the deciding runs in the game.

i had a bad feeling the minute markakis got his hit, because feliciano has been so good this season retiring the first batter he faced

“Schneider called a slider to Aubrey Huff, but I shook it off,” Feliciano told reporters in Baltimore.  “I wanted to throw a cutter, but I didn’t hit my spot.”

cutter… really… yikes… the ball was a spinner… i thought it was the slider, with no crash to it… guess not… which makes it worse

On the flip side, Bobby Parnell retired all three batters he faced, coming off three straight appearances allowing a run.
