Injuries: Maine, Perez, Reyes and Beltran

David Lennon, in a post to Twitter, says that both John Maine and Oliver Perez will start each end of a doubleheader for St. Lucie on Monday.

Lennon also reports that Jose Reyes, who is on the disabled list with a torn tendon in his hamstring, feels something on “quick moves”.

Reyes reportedly played catch on the field prior to last night’s game but was supposed to take ground balls.

…that doesn’t sound good, considering that a major part of his game is stealing bases, which requires a “quick move”…

Update, 5:25 pm, by Matthew Cerrone:

Carlos Beltran is hurting again from the bone bruise below his right knee and he plans to get an MRI soon to find out the extent of the damage,” writes David Lennon, in a post to his blog for Newsday.

seriously, at this point, you’d think they’d have one of those LifeScreening machines set up in the clubhouse, like a security gate in the airport… guys walk through it, if bells and whitsles start ringing they step aside and go directly to the trainer’s room… otherwise, if all is quite, go home…

For quotes from Beltran, check out Lennon’s blog.

…beltran is in today’s game, which i would think is a good sign…

so with reyes, what is the worst case scenario? what could this injury be at the worst? in need of surgery? does anyone know medically what the story is or might be?

koosman3669 June 20, 2009 at 3:37 pm

With the way Nieve, Redding, and Livan have been going, I say take your time Perez and Maine. I actually feel better about this staff without them.

2009_believe June 20, 2009 at 3:40 pm

could somebody tell me what it means to “feel something” on “quick moves”

also scottmetsfan – i goggled to get some info on this idk it says surgery isn’t really used to fix torn hamstrings, i would say he’s probably not going to have surgery but if he feels something he should sit again and not play and hurt himself more, its also kind of weird because the first twitter lennon sent was that he felt no pain so i’m not sure whats going on

scottmetsfan June 20, 2009 at 3:53 pm

i guess what i really want to know, medically, is what this COULD be. hamstrings, i think, need a whole lot of rest, and i also don’t think they require surgery, but i may be wrong there too.

2009_believe June 20, 2009 at 3:55 pm

yeah i don’t really know anything about it myself except that they said he had a small tear – does the tear heal itself? i don’t even know, i just want reyes back but i don’t want him to hurt himself more, i’m sure we all feel the same way

stickguy June 20, 2009 at 4:04 pm

This does sound kind of weird (what is it really?).

But I’m up to about 95% certain that he is done for the year. If surgery is possible, it will happen.

And if it needs rest, that means he’ll be out until august, then come back and tweak it in the 1st game, and be out for the rest of the year.

With the luck of this team medically, just shut him down now and don’t even have him try to play.

Reyes has a small tear in his HAMSTRING TENDON, not the hamstring itself! I’m no MD, but I do know that sometimes the tendon itself does require surgery to repair in the majority of cases, when the person wants to return to 100% full strength. If I were the Mets I would get him an MRI asap and see if that tear has healed any if at all. The tendon can heal itself, but a) it can take a significant amount of time and b) it will never be as strong as it originally was without surgery. Think of it as a severly twisted ankle, sure over time the pain subsides and you can walk again, however as anyone who has ever had a severely twisted ankle knows from that point forward it is considerablely easier to re-injure that particlar ankle.

P.S. if he does require surgery, he is likely out for the season.

I think the Mets need to find a way to get Jose healthy by the end of the year, and really start entertaining trades for the guy. There just always seems to be “something” that’s going to keep him from being a top player, whether it be his head, his injuries or what not. While he’s been out, I don’t think the Mets have struggled offensively because they’ve missed Reyes at the top of the line-up. A defensively solid contact hitter would do the trick. The Mets need to add thump from either 1B or the corner outfield spots and I think they’ll be fine, and I wonder if Reyes can net you a player like that.

Cora has done a surprisingly solid job of replacing Reyes as an everyday SS. That is in part because Jose wasn’t having a very good season so far, but it is still kind of a shock. With the way the Mets record has been tied to Reyes scoring a run or not you would think the season should have been over with him missing a month or more.

I don’t want to preach medicine when I don’t really know, but it would seem that Reyes could push through a tendon tear easier than a muscle tear. It would seem more difficult to make that kind of tear rapidly worse. Think of all the pitchers who wear out elbow and shoulder ligaments, it doesn’t happen overnight. Maybe he could play through it, and have surgery at the end of the season…

Sounds like Beltran could use a couple days off.

2009_believe June 20, 2009 at 6:01 pm

I think Beltran is okay he said that just wants to make sure that he is not making his injury worse which is fine and as for reyes i’m not sure where he is but i’m sure they have a close eye on him and i would not trade reyes i feel that when he comes back he would be a great boost to this offense. I do like Cora but he does not have the range reyes has and once reyes comes back cora can spot castillo at 2nd who needs some days off because of his knees.

kd bart June 20, 2009 at 7:31 pm

Not even a threat of any offense.

SantanaCYYOung June 20, 2009 at 7:41 pm

none, if omar believes this team could do something this year he MUST overpay for a hitter, if he doesn’t the season is done anyway

AND livan, nieve and redding are not going to keep this up all year

KL15 June 20, 2009 at 8:49 pm

OK, it’s time to get real. Please spare me the “not a real fan” grenades, it’s weak and you know it. It’s just not going to happen this year. Reyes probably isn’t coming back this season, Delgado is questionable, the coaching is a joke, the medical staff can’t get out of their own way, and Jerry Manuel is a lovable loser. The tide is shifting in baseball and the Mets need to take notice. The old days of spend, spend, spend, to win championships are gone. Championship teams build from within and Omar and the Mets need to catch on to that. First and foremost, get Reyes right. No Jerry Manuel, Reyes at 80% is not better than most at 100%. Either he’s there or he isn’t. And he’s not. Get him right. Secondly, NO BIG MOVES, no “power bat.” Set yourself up for the future and do not sell the farm. Maybe I’m wrong but I think the team has a chance to be very solid for the forseeable future and to risk that on a season that is lost is madness.

Mets5rocks June 20, 2009 at 10:12 pm

Completely agree

Nate W. June 21, 2009 at 9:51 am

while I agree as well, 2012 is a long way away to wait for a winner.

Replacing Delgado, Sheffield, Castillo, catching, and the back of the rotation internally may not do anything but tread water in terms of the talent level.

Murphy, Evans, and Fernando Martinez aren’t looking like the answers they appeared to be last winter.

KL15 June 21, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Oh, I should have stated, this is pinning the hopes on Josh Thole, Ruben Tejada, etc. Murphy can be solid I think, maybe he can develop more. Nick Evans is a bench guy at best, and Fernando Martinez, while I know he didn’t light the world up, is 20 years old and I’m willing to give him time to develop.
