Maybe a small tear of some kind, or some other damage? Hopefully if there is something to be found, it is one of those "wont make it worse by playing" deals and he can finish the season (although that never seems to work out for the Mets). The way the leg problems are piling up for Carlos, I'm thinking it is less likely he will be here after his contract expires (he may not be able to walk by then!) If nothing else, he may have to shift to LF to save wear on the legs. I have a feeling (bad one too) that you are right, and there is another show.
