PostGame: Rays 10, Mets 6

by Ted Berg on June 21st, 2009 at 6:06 pm

The Rays defeated the Mets, 10-6, this afternoon at Citi Field.

For a complete recap, box score and stats, click here.

The Least You Should Know:

  • Mike Pelfrey started strong but got into trouble in the fifth when he started falling behind in counts. He allowed four runs on five hits in the frame.
  • The Mets battled back thanks to a Brian Schneider home run in the sixth, but the Rays’ offense went to town on the Mets’ bullpen. Bobby Parnell allowed four runs without retiring a batter in the seventh and took the loss.
  • David Wright came into the game on a 1-for-17 stretch, but went 3-for-5 with a double in the game.

Other Observations and Notes:

  • The Rays can hit. Their first three hitters combined to go 11-for-16 on the night. Seems like a good way to score runs.
  • For what it’s worth, the Mets are now 2-8 in rubber games on the season.
  • Every member of the Mets’ bullpen not named Francisco Rodriguez pitched in the game. Even Brian Stokes.
  • Perpetual Pedro Feliciano pitched in his sixth straight game and 40th of the season. Maybe he doesn’t have the capacity for fatigue. Maybe if he played in the 1880s he would’ve thrown 600 innings a year like Pud Galvin.
  • The Phillies are losing even more often then the Mets right now, so they’ve got that going for them, which is nice.
  • Carlos Beltran, who is nursing a bad knee, made a beautiful sliding catch in the seventh inning, and Mets fans everywhere held their breath.
  • El Hombre, Albert Pujols, comes to town tomorrow.

The Game Ball:

  • Goes to Feliciano, because if you pitch every single day you eventually have to get a game ball just for the effort, and no one else really earned it today.

Stat: Feliciano, You’re In

by Regis Courtemanche on June 21st, 2009 at 11:05 am

Pedro Feliciano has appeared in 39 of the Mets’ 66 games so far this season.

He is on pace to make 96 relief appearances, ten more than his career high which he set in 2008.

Feliciano has pitched without rest seventeen times, on one day’s rest eleven times, and on two day’s rest seven times.

For a humorous take on this, check out Amazin’ Avenue.

…feliciano has been stellar this season, and is naturally the first choice in a tight situation…however, when is enough enough…unfortunately, with j.j. putz injured, and bobby parnell’s recent struggles, feliciano is sure to be leaned on even more…

by Matthew Cerrone on June 21st, 2009 at 10:44 am

Gary Sheffield will return to the starting lineup today, Wilson Valdez will start at shortstop, with Alex Cora shifting to second, while Carlos Beltran will again start in center field, despite being scheduled tomorrow for an MRI on his knee.

Cora will bat leadoff, followed in order by Daniel Murphy, Beltran, David Wright, Sheffield, Ryan Church, Brian Schneider, Valdez, and Mike Pelfrey on the mound.

Update, 10:55 am:

WFAN’s Ed Coleman says on Twitter that there is no tarp on the field, despite a wet weather report.
