Buzz: Does Anyone have Interest in Pedro Martinez
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 22, 2009 10:26 am

Last week on SI.com, Jon Heyman listed the Mets behind the Cubs, Angels, Dodgers and Rays as teams who are likely to sign Pedro Martinez.

However, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times believes, though the Angels scouted Martinez last Friday, they have ‘no interest’ in pursuing him due to ‘baseball reasons, not financial ones.’

According to Shaikin, citing baseball sources, “Martinez’s fastball was clocked most often in the 85-mph range.”

Shaikin reports the Dodgers are not interested in Martinez as well, and have not discussed him since spring training.

Martinez held a workout last Friday in the Dominican Republic, though there are questions as to whether he ever attended, and which teams stayed to watch, according to MLB Trade Rumors.

for what it’s worth, i find zero evidence the Mets attended martinez’s supposed workout… i really don’t think they have much interest in bringing him back, mostly due to the money

…the buzz around baseball suggests martinez is seeking around $2.5 million, to essentially pitch for two months

According to Buster Olney, in a post to his blog last week for ESPN.com, the Mets can add roughly $5 million to their payroll.

if it’s true about the death of his fastball, he should just hang it up. don’t even make a team waste it’s time. wait… on second thought, maybe the Phillies should make an inquiry.

Good so lets go get someone that can actually help this team.

    Pedro is not that guy.

    just curious…

    for 2.5 mil…

would you rather a full season of redding or a half season of Pedro?

    A few points:

    1) Starting pitching is not the Mets problem. If Maine and Perez come back before the All Star break, then there is no room for Martinez.

    2) This team needs a bat – be it a Huff, Dye or Johnson.

Starting pitching hasn’t been the problem? I seem to remember a 15-0 loss, a now 10-6 loss, a 8-5 loss an 11-6 loss a 7-1 loss, a 9-8 loss and 2 games against philly that they won in extra innings.

I’d say pitching is of a major concern. This team has averaged 4.2 runs a game which should be enough to win most games.

Yes we probably need a Bat. But if reyes comes back healthy i sincerely believe they have more then enough offense. They have had such inconsistent pitching and the bullpen has been so over-used that it’s starting to wear on them.

    • Chan Ho Parking Lot says:

They do need a bat, but it needs to be the type of bat that can be a difference maker. Johnson and Huff are not such bats. Dye possibly is.

      • Mets5rocks says:

The only bat available who the Mets know can CONSISTENTLY hit it out of CIti is Adam Dunn! End of story!
