Buzz: Rockies Not Likely to Trade Hawpe

By Matthew Cerrone on Jun 22, 2009, 12:45 pm

Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd told the Denver Post he is not likely to trade OF Brad Hawpe this season.

“That’s something you would only do strategically, for the big picture,” O’Dowd said.  “That would be something for the offseason, if at all.”

The Rockies have won 16 of their last 17 games, and are now 1.5 games back of the National League Wild Card.

Last week, Hawpe told the Denver Post that if he is traded, he will void the option in his contract and become a free agent at the end of next season.

On Friday, Jon Heyman of SI.com listed Hawpe among four players who the Mets should consider acquiring, along with Nationals OF Adam Dunn, O’s 1B Aubrey Huff or Indians infielder Mark DeRosa.

in case you missed it, here, i’m on the Dunn Train, if only the Nationals weren’t asking so much in return

Good! Glad to heard the Rockies don’t want to trade Hawpe. I mean does anyone thinking this guy is a difference-maker outside of Colorado? Is he worth Parnell and Martinez?

I really wish the Mets would have been on the Dunn train six months ago, when he would have only cost money (which, regardless of Bernie Madoff, the Mets have plenty of) and not prospects (which the Mets lack).

In the past I was anti-Dunn. Because of his strikeouts and defense. Now after seeing the way CitiField plays and our lack of a slugger I am for it. However it pains me to think we could have had him for just money this past off-season. Now we’ll have to overpay with prospects. Not something that we have alot of. If I am going to be mortgaging the farm; then I would want a complete player in return ie. Adrian Gonzalez.

I agree with what your saying. But you can take Adrian Gonzalez off any wish list.

HA!, Adrian Gonzalez??? We’d have to offer all of the farm and next years drafties and they still would say no! I agree he be a great pick-up, but there is no way they give him up, they have already said as much.

There is no way Omar is going to get Dunn.. he passed on him in the off season, he can’t now give up young players when he didn’t have too if he just acted a few monts earlier.. he will go another direction.

Sadly, stilltheewm, I think you nailed it. Omar will make himself look bad to get Dunn now for prospects. Does Dunn have issues? Of course, but our complete lack of power would make him a great addition –K’s and lousy defense notwithstanding.

Quite honestly it doesn’t matter how bad it makes him look, and actually most of the reason Dunn was not signed was because the coupons said this is what we can spend on payroll period. As short sighted as that particular non-signing was I don’t think they can ignore the fact that Dunn is the only player currently available that the Mets know without a doubt can crush the ball out of Citifield on a regular basis! THe absolute need for the “instant offense factor” in the Met lineup is positively glaring! Especially if Beltran is lost for an entended period.

I think you have to bite the bullet and pay up for Dunn — as long as it doesn’t include F-Mart, Holt, Thole or Flores. But if it was something involving Niese, Parnell, Murphy? I’d pay up.

We better get Dunn by this weekend or we are in trouble. Is Omar going to wait until we lose 5 or 6 series in a row to make a move!!!!! MAKE A DARN MOVE NOW!!!!!

So Im just curious where are all the posters who I couldnt get through to during the offseason about Adam Dunn. Come on guys show your faces, you were all so vocal about how Dunn Ked too much, played in a ban box, and how he was always on bad teams (possible the dumbest argument ever, ask the red sox about Jason Bay). I mean I guess I was right when I thought a guy who hits 40 HRs (regardless of where he plays) and has 400 OBP would help the Mets, crazy.

      Hit the Weights,

I was with you on the offseason Get Dunn Bandwagon. I actually wanted them not to pick up Delgado’s Contract and replace him with his identical player in Dunn. Except Dunn is younger.

I was on the pro-dunn wagon, except I wanted to pick up delgado’s option and then trade him for something….anything

I know what you mean. I don’t know if they oculd have gotten anything though. He’s pretty much DH only at this point. WIth Pat Burrell only getting 8 million a year, i think it would have been hard to find a suitor for Delgado and his 13 million.

Hit the weights,……………I’m guilty as charged! I was one who thought Dunn K’d too much (altough I didn’t fully take his walks into account) and his defense was lackluster to say the least. I did’nt make the bad team argument because frankly I agree thats a poor argument. But with that said given the circumstances I don’t think it can be any more obvious that Adam Dunn makes the lineup considerably better and with the power to hit it out of Citi with regularity (see Nats vs Mets at CIti video for reference). We need that instant offense without Delgado in the line-up, and can u imagine what the line-up would be like with both Delgado and Dunn in it?

There would be lots of K’s with Runners on base…. But also lots of Solo Home runs.

            Good with the Bad.

If you slot Dunn after Wright and before Sheff I would think there would be many Solo HR’s it would be more likely with runners on.

I was half joking… having a 3-7 of Beltran, Delgado, Wright, Dunn, (church/Sheff) would be a great 3-7. Throw in a healthy Reyes atop the lineup and someone #2 either Santos or Castillo would be a fantastic lineup.

Live in the DC area, share season tix for the Nats, see a lot of Dunn. As a “pitching and defense” kind of guy, I would hate to see Dunn on the Mets. He is SO bad defensively, it really amazes me at times. Not just limited range, but inability to play angles, poor arm, the whole deal.

I’d like a few more home runs as well, but, especially with Beltran being more and more of a question mark, I think you really do the Mets a disservice sticking Dunn out there. Aren’t both Maine and Ollie fly ball pitchers? I don’t want a guy like Dunn out there when they’re throwing.

I’d rather see what we can do with what we’ve got this season and make some FA moves that are good for the Mets on the offseason than make a panic move that really degrades us on defense. Can’t have it at Citi.

If Dunn wasn’t the answer when it was only money, then he’s definitely not the answer when it’s money and prospects.

I don’t buy this instant offense arguement either. I would prefer CONSISTANT offense over instant. I’d prefer a deal for a player who fits the Citi type of ball the Mets need to win.

I had heard in the off season Carl Crawford may be available due to the Rays OF glut. Now, I know that’s aiming high, and i don’t know how we’d matchup, but I’d prefer a player with his skills hitting and running around the bases than a “blast or walk or strike out” guy added to the club.

Heyman is a moron. The worst in the business for so-called experts. If he actually watched games outside of the east coast he’d know the Rockies have won a ton of games lately and wouldn’t trade Hawpe, esp. when only a few games out of the wild card. Absurd to even think they would. But then again, this is the same guy who said the Mets and Vladdy was a done deal and the Mets were going to acquire Alou in 06 (and then trade for Sean Green literally within a couple hours of his inaccurate report on Alou.)

Peter, if you haven’t noticed we have guys that are skilled hitters with speed! But you can only score so many runs bunching singles and doubles together before the laws of having 9 fielders on the field will eventually get three outs. What we don’t currently have is the ability to hit a single, a double and then run a hitter out there who can consistantly hit the ball out of Citifield (or any other ballpark ) with regularity as Delgado can. So if you are down by more than 2 runs late there is not a realistic chance you can come back. We DO need that kind of impact bat no question. Do you give up half the farm for it? no, but if a reasonable deal for a guy like Dunn who is almost guaranteed to hit 40 HR a year and can Crush it out of Citi with regularity (an important difference between him and say a Holiday or a Derosa) even if it cost a prospect or two I think you have to do it. Philly is only going to be asleep at the wheel for so long.

My response to that would be that by lengthening the linup there’s less of a chance you’re down by that many runs late in a game. Those guiys left on base by that instant offense guy could have been knocked in already by a double in the gap.

Let’s assume a guy like Crawford is available and Reyes is back August 1. Our lineup could conceiveably look like this:

      Crawford
      Castillo
      Reyes
      Beltran
      Wright
      Church
      Murphy/Sheffield
      Santos/Schnieder

That’s a team I think I’d enjoy watching play, and would be a tough one to beat. A lot of speed with the first 6 players and gap power throughout.

It’s not what we’re used to, more of Herzog’s Cardinals, but I think it’s the type of team needed for Citi – speed, line drives and defense.

“Those guys left on base by that instant offense guy *striking out* could have been knocked in already by a double in the gap.”
