Health: Beltran MRI, Reyes Running
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 22, 2009 11:35 am

According to multiple reports, Carlos Beltran is scheduled to have MRI on his knee today.

Yesterday, according to MLB.com, Beltran told reporters he feels a sharp pain in his knee when he runs full speed, saying:

“I don’t feel I can play a lot of games the way it felt today.  I’m a little bit worried, to be honest.”

Meanwhile, on Friday, Mets GM Omar Minaya told reporters Jose Reyes did some running before the game.

Yesterday, however, Reyes said he hasn’t run, nor as he fielded ground balls, adding, “I worry about running, that’s the key.”

the perceived lack of communication between players, trainers and management is becoming quite alarming…

Instead, Reyes took swings in the batting cage, and said he did not feel any pain.

To read quotes from Reyes, check out Kristie Ackert’s report in the Daily News.

…as i said over the weekend, i believe the Mets are working jose back slowly, rehabbing the tendon, but surgery has not yet been taken off of the table… and, until it is, i’ll remain worried

    Awesome…. What’s next?

  2. Ugh. We need Bob Murphy’s unsinkable enthusiasm to turn this spell into a positive… Like “While you hate to see the injuries mounting, Ralph, the youngsters getting some big league experience will only help the Mets in the long run.” Omar will have to do something if Beltran goes down/ and/or Reyes is not back soon.

i could see church playing some CF…he did it with the Nats. Pagan, when/if back most likely. But that wont suffice for extended period of time.
Hell, if Beltran is gone for extended period of time…then fuggeddiboutit

  3. starz31 says:

i cant understand the communication…it really is. How can the GM of a team not know exactly what is happening to his star players rehab? thats a joke.
Reyes says it hurts any time he makes quick moves…its gonna be awhile for him, sadly. but hopefully not done.

I hope beltran hasnt been make his knee worse by playing…that could be bad.

I doubt we’ll get a good answer regarding his MRI anyways…and if so, how much can we trust it?

  4. JINBK says:

I haven’t conceded this season yet (how can you, we’re only two out).

That said, if Beltran is going to miss any significant time, I think it’s about time we come to terms with the fact that it’s really just not out year.

  5. 2009_believe says:

David Lennon also said jose was running on a treadmil so i’m not sure really whats going – could omar have meant the treadmil and jose meant outside? it seems very odd that nobody knows whats going on and do they know they they are contradicting each other

as for beltran i don’t think there is much they can do about a bone bruise so if the mri doesn’t show anything new they are going to have to work on managing that issue and maybe he needs to sit for a few days every once in a while, once we can get pagan back he can spot for beltran in center and we can only hope omar is working to get a big bat for left

  6. Jaded1983 says:

When can we start looking for answers regarding our DL All star team.

Sure some injuries just happen, but the mets have consistently had a large number of people on the DL. Why?

Is it our medical staff? trainers? strength and conditioning coaches? Do the mets players not do enough conditioning? Do they do to much?

Why the heck do the mets consistently have a large number of their players on the DL? Its ruined our season every year since ‘06

  7. euchreking says:

It’s certainly potentially really bad news. But the Phillies are terrible right now, with their best hitter and closer out, so we have to keep that in mind. If we get a healthy and effective Maine and Perez back (a big if) and we get another bat through a trade (a real possibility) then we can sustain ourselves through a period without Beltran, especially if Pagan comes back healthy–he’s a good player. I’m not happy, but it could be worse.

Not that the “sky is falling”, yet, but I did some research on bone bruises and their impact on a player. I didn’t like what I saw and of course the recommended treatment plan (particularly, initial rest) wasn’t followed. Is this yet another situation where treating the injury when it occurred with some time off may have resulted in less time off later? It’s like there is no foresight by the team with these injuries. Yes, I know the Mets are, and have been, hurting (sorry, had to do it) for healthy bodies but at what risk. Of course had Beltran sat earlier in the year with the bone bruise we would have again heard about him not being a tough player.

Anyways, for more on bone bruises: http://www.midwestsportsfans.com/2009/02/knee-bone-bruise-treatment-diagnosis/

  9. The amazin’ thing is that with all that has gone wrong, Philthydelphia is just two games up. If the Mets can hold water through mid-july, the August version of this team will include Wagner, Putz, Ollie, Delgado, Reyes… Those are very significant additions, two of which will be playing for contracts. Omar should go for a guy like Matt Holiday in the meantime. Fresh face, solid player.

    • AndrewMichaelZ says:

Sorry to be blunt, but you can’t be serious. All the players that you mentioned are complete wildcards and aren’t locks to be any help to the team.

Should Omar really go after a rental of Holliday who will be a FA next year? One player (albeit a good one) can’t right this sinking ship. I am not throwing in the towel on the season, but don’t think the team should clear the farm for 1 guy when the problems run so much deeper.

      • Patrick says:

Holiday is not the one guy that is certain, but it is hard to say unless ohter GMs show their cards if there is not a deal worth making.

The key is Reyes, and they need to get an MRI on that tendon soon, if it has not healed at all then making a move is risky, but if he is able to get back a move can absolutely push this sore offense to a different level, then if and when Delgado gets back you see what happens.

But this team if the right deal unearths itself absolutely should be prepared to make a trade, especially if Reyes can get back.

  10. starz31 says:

ugh…im tired of talking about injuries…theres just so much up in the air right now…

maybe i can sit out of work for two days because of “fatigue”

  11. methead says:

Everyone keeps saying “Omar go get someone” like its so simple. Fact is the other person has to want to make a trade. Truth is, it may take Fernando Martinez and at least another top prospect (and Niese or evans are not top prospects) to get Holliday.

So if Reyes and Delago dont come back or come back not as good….do we want to trade away all that for a player thats not going to make us a world series team?? Not so sure.

    • wright5murph28 says:

there is only a handful of players that i personally would trade fmart for, and holliday IS one of them…theres more to it then just numbers…hes an aggressive, tough player who has power, steals bases, and will hit around .300…he resembles Wright alot in fact, and i know everyone will say coors field blah blah blah..hes playing in that coliseum in oakland and that thing is huge and he still has 8 bombs and 40 RBI i believe…u gotta figure his numbers will go up in a better lineup and also he will get to play in citizens bank 10 times a season…fmart is a mystery…he can be the next wright/reyes or he can be the next milledge/escobar…id be willing to take a chance and trade him for holliday..but only if its fmart and avg prospects..if its fmart and another top prospect…im not sure i would do that just because thats alot to give up for any player

  12. wright5murph28 says:

mets released wily mo pena and javier valetin from AAA…odd

  13. AndrewMichaelZ : We know fully well that Holiday would be a rental but with each passing day and his less-than-stellar stats, the prospect price goes down significantly. With that, expensive seats to fill and the mediocrity of the teams in contention, the Mets can’t sit by and watch a Triple A lineup continue to give us all agita. Look what Manny did for the Dodgers last year. Is Holiday Manny? No. But we’d rather him than Adam Dunn or Aubrey Huff – even for a half season… Delgado and Putz are on schedule. Wagner is throwing and Maine and Perez are pitching today – so how are they wild cards? Reyes is the one we should be concerned with most. He’s afraid to run.

    • Mets5rocks says:

Why would you rather have Holiday than Dunn? Holiday is a free agent rental who will cost a ton to retain. Dunn is under control for the rest of this season and next at a reasonable rate! Dunn who plays in Washington (which is not a small park by any means) has hit 18 HR’s and walked 55 times compared with 33 for Holiday. Not too mention Dunn has absolutely crushed two of the longest HR’s in CItifield! Dunn outslugs, and has a better OBP than Holiday. Yes Holiday does hit for a higher average, but with far less power. We got two guys right now in the top five in B.A. in Wright and Beltran where has it gotten us in Citifield? We need a bat GUARANTEED to crush it out of Citi on a regular basis, we need that instant offense factor in the line-up period! We don’t even know if Holiday can even get one out in Citi? Yes Dunn’s defense is not stellar, but frankly we need offense of the instant variety like Delgado produced, and imagine when Delgado comes back, oh the line-up that would be.

  14. Andrew says:

If Beltran misses any significant time and someone like Dunn is still expensive, I think the Mets should become sellers at the deadline. I know it’s hard with the new stadium and all, but I think that’s what you gotta do. Guys like Church and Castillo and Livan and Sheff might be able to bring some kind of prospect back from a contender, though we might have to pay part of Castillo’s salary.

I dunno, the Mets are in a bad place. They don’t really have the pieces to be buyers or sellers. The problem is that they have this great core, but everyone around it is very mediocre.

  15. dave56dj says:

“the perceived lack of communication between players, trainers and management is becoming quite alarming”

Becoming? Really? Matt I know you are an optimist but the communication has been an absolute mess for years…not becoming…IS alarming.

  16. jamie_ says:

if we lose Beltran, it would take a stone cold miracle to make the playoffs.

Well, that or the return of absolutely healthy and crushing Reyes and Delgado. Which in itself sounds more and more like a miracle.
