By Michael Baron - Jun 22, 2009 7:17 pm

John Maine pitched four innings and allowed a run on two hits, while walking three and striking out one, for Single-A St. Lucie today.

Maine is currently recovering from a pinched nerve and fatigue in his throwing shoulder.

Update, 8:55 pm, by Matthew Cerrone:

Maine told reporters he feels good, and will throw a bullpen session in two days.

Later, Oliver Perez allowed six runs and seven hits, while walking one, in three innings pitched for St. Lucie.

Well that’s one small ray of sunshine at least. Although I would have preferred to hear that Delgado has made a miraculous recovery and will be activated on Weds.

But hey, beggars can’t be choosers.

Good to see Ollie hasn’t improved in the slightest. What a blemish on Omar’s record. And anyone can talk about hindsight, but the truth is every Mets fan knew to sign Lowe and forget Perez.

Xavier, I’d like to have heard that Reyes won a marathon. But like you, I’ll take what I can get.

how can oliver perez suck this much againist a single a team
    jeez

He was trying to just throw strikes and wasn’t trying to fool anyone. The condition of his knee and throwing strikes was all the coaching staff was interested in his first game back, and any level can hit a batting machine. That he walked only one and was not hurting afterward is a great sign.

John and Olllie’s Florida Vacation continues. I’ll say it again, I take Redding and Nieve.

I do too. I want to see Maine throw more than 100 pitches effectively in the minors.
I’m curious to know what speed Ollie was throwing tonight. If he was at 92+, I’d be more optimistic seeing that maybe he was more concerned with working on location than actual pitching. If he was 89-88 or less, then there’s a lot of reason to be pessimistic.

Id like to thank Scott Boras once again, for dictating that Lowe HAD to go to Atlanta, since the Mets were the ONLY TEAM IN BASEBALL interested in Oliver Perez.

    • Xavier22 says:

So it was Bora$ who orchestrated Smoltz going to Boston, thus forcing the Braves to add a 4th year to Lowe’s contract? I see.

Bora$ sure is a diabolical SOB. Was he behind the Kennedy assassination too?

  6. Nate W. says:

I’d be concerned with how deep into a game Maine could pitch if he came back next turn in the rotation. I’d send him to Buffalo for one more rehab and look for him to be able to throw 100 pitches or more when he comes back. I don’t know that he can do that now.

  7. metsfan1 says:

Wow, that Perez signing is starting to make the Luis Castillo contract look like a bargain.

  8. KL15 says:

How can you not structure Perez’s contract to be filled with performance clauses? This is so embarassing.

  9. 2009_believe says:

I’m a Maine fan, I think he’ll come back and he’s compeitive he’ll do well i believe that being said let him have another rehab start especially considering how redding pitched tonight and how neive has been doing, as for ollie i’m beginning to feel he’ll never be back and i never really depended on him comming back, i would like maine back though or at least knowing he can pitch makes the rotation deeper.

    • KL15 says:

I completely agree about Maine, I think he’s a really strong pitcher. I just wish he had a curveball, but I’m nit-picking. Oliver Perez is going into the Omar Minaya hall of fame. This is going to be awful and what’s better he’s around from two more years after this one.

a bad single A pitcher making 12 million dollars a year

Yikes! That really puts things in perspective! Batender another double please! lol

  11. Mets5rocks says:

oops that was supposed to be Bartender! lol Me and my fat fingers! lol

  12. markgriffith says:

Maine’s status is probably directed to some degree by Nieve’s next start. If Nieve pitches well again, I see Maine pitching another rehab start. But not 100 pitches. No need to overwork him in a rehab start. Another 4-5 innings of effective ball should do it.

  13. cuervo says:

What sucks is the fact that by MLB rules, once a pitcher starts their rehab start, they have to come back to the MLB club after 30 days (unless they go back on the DL)

That being said, I hope if ANYTHING, the Mets put Nieve and Ollie in the Pen (if they do bring him back up) and keep Redding and Maine in the rotation.

What I prefer is that when the 30 days are up, the Mets put Ollie on Waivers and hope someone else will take him off their hands. If he passes through waivers, send him back to the minors and let him take however long he needs to get himself right.
