Pre Game: Mets vs. Cardinals (Game One)
By Matthew Cerrone - Jun 22, 2009 4:09 pm

Carlos Beltran, who had an MRI today, will not be in tonight’s starting lineup.

The Mets optioned Ken Takahashi back to Triple-A Buffalo.

There is no word yet on who will replace Takahashi on the roster, nor is there news of Beltran’s MRI.

Also, it is crazy windy at Citi Field today.

Update, 4:20 pm:

Alex Cora will bat leadoff
tonight, followed in order by Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Fernando Tatis in left field, Ryan Church, Omir Santos, Jeremy Reed in center, Luis Castillo and the pitcher.

Jerry Manuel is expected in the media room soon to address reporters.

The buzz around Citi Field, thanks mostly to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, is that Beltran will be put on the DL, while Fernado Martinez will be promoted from Triple-A, along with LHP Pat Misch.

Update, 4:30 pm:

WFAN’s Ed Coleman says on Twitter that Elmmer Dessens and Misch will be promoted from Triple-A, not the young Martinez.

To follow Coleman on Twitter, go to Twitter.com/WFANMets.

So, at this point, given the TWO call ups, and the one known demotion, I think it’s pretty clear Beltran is going to the disabled list.

Update, 4:42 pm:

Omar Minaya said Beltran will be put on disabled list with a bone bruise on his right knee.

The Mets will recall Fernando Martinez, Elmmer Dessens and Misch, while Takahashi has been optioned to Triple A and Wilson Valdez has been designated for assignment.

Minaya would only say the bruise on Beltran’s knee is getting bigger, because it is bone on bone, though he is confident he can return in two weeks.

Update, 4:52 pm:

Jerry Manuel said Reed and Fernando Martinez will get time in center field.

Update, 4:57 pm:

Brian Stokes will likely be used as tonight’s the eighth-inning guy, as he looks to get Bobby Parnell and Sean Green some rest, Manuel said.

Additionally, Manuel said Fernando Tatis could get time at shortstop and second base.

  1. Mets5rocks says:

Odd that they don’t have a lineup posted yet.

  2. Patrick says:

this seaons is over, Beltran is definitely down .400 OPS Martinez recalled.

  3. The Stache says:

    Per Adam Rubin

UPDATE: The Daily News has learned that lefthanded reliever Pat Misch and outfielder Fernando Martinez are headed to the Mets, replacing Ken Takahashi and, seemingly, Carlos Beltran. Beltran must be headed to the DL or Martinez could not return so soon.

Two sources told the Daily News that Elmer Dessens was supposed to be called up, in place of Nick Evans, but the Mets may have backed off the move.

  4. ravin108 says:

I saw on the mets minor league blog, someone reported that Beltran is headed for the DL.
    ugh.

  5. Mets5rocks says:

    UGH! It’s gonna get ugly!

  6. wright5murph28 says:

so now omar has a decision…get a bat or well just hope they can stay afloat til later in the season and make a run…id personally go for a bat..but we’ll see i guess

  7. The Stache says:

As much as I would like to see Dunn on the team, I am not sure it matters at this point. Additionally, Dunn may cost too much to begin with. I would not sell the whole farm for him. If Parnell and a Murphy or Niese get it done, I would do it.

    • Mets5rocks says:

They are running out of choices at this point. We don’t have the right guy managing the team to kick some rookies in the rear and get them to win………….if we had a Pinella or a Leland, or even a Bobby V. I could see hope, but now I dunno it’s not looking good.

  8. Patrick says:

I have always been a fair backer to Omar Minaya but you don’t send your Manager to announce that he is now down to one remaining baseball player of any consequence who is on a record pace for K’s in a Met uniform.

  9. Mets5rocks says:

Jerry addressing the Media,……F-mart and Pat Misch headed for NY this isn’t going to be good.

  10. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

good lord that lineup makes me wince in pain.

  11. wright5murph28 says:

tatis batting cleanup over church against a righty…ok

    • Mets5rocks says:

Why not put Evans in there and get him some at bats? It’s not like Tatis is tearing the cover off the ball…………or even getting it out of the infield for that matter. The only reason I can see CHurch after Tatis is to give Tatis some protection and lengthen the lineup somewhat. That said…..UGH it’s gonna be a long month.

      • thekid024 says:

I was wondering the same thing about Evans. I liked what I saw from him last year and in spring training.

  12. ScottN says:

I’m still not quite getting why Castillo is batting 8th. I think not having Wright cleanup is the right thing to do, but Fernando Tatis our cleanup hitter, ugh…

  13. The Stache says:

    Introducing the New York PopGuns

  14. ravi3 says:

    Something is up…Consider the following:
    1) No lineup
2)Takahashi sent down without a replacement
    3)F-Mart being pinch hit for
4)No results on the Beltran MRI
5)Bisons releasing Javier Valentin and Wily Mo Pena, especially given how they were performing and the dearth of power on the big league club…

To me, 5), followed by 1) are the biggest indicators that something is up. It makes absolutely no sense to release Pena and Valentin…both were hitting well (thought Valentin was injured) and both can add value, especially Pena to this Met team. Especially when the possibilty of Beltran hitting the dl is present, It is important to keep a guy like Pena around, as he would be the most potent bat they could call up. Obviously the fact that the lineup isn’t posted leads to this sort of speculation off the bat.

My first theory is that Beltran is on the DL, and will be replaced by F-Mart…however there doesn’t seem to be a correlation with 2 & 5

My second theory is that Omar is working on a trade centering on F-Mart, which will net the team a ml reliever and one or two ml ready reliever…The only other viable commodity they have to make a decent sized splash is Parnell, who I would think would be in addition to (and not in lieu of) F-Mart.

Of course the above events could also be completely un-related, but honestly, where is the fun in that?

    • Patrick says:

If Minaya traded Martinez for 3 relief pitchers he would be burned alive.

    • ravi3 says:

Guess I was on the right track with my first guess…without further ado:

      New York Mets All-Injured team:

      Position Players
      SS: Jose Reyes
      2B: Ramon Martinez
      CF: Carlos Beltran
      1B: Carlos Delgado
      RF: Angel Pagan

      Starting Pitchers
      LHP: Oliver Perez
      RHP: John Maine

      Bullpen
      Set-Up Man: J.J. Putz
      Closer: Billy Wagner

It may not be complete, but this team is nearly as good as the healthy Mets, while the offense is certainly better. What did we Met fans do to deserve this?

      • wlaadair says:

Never in my life would I have imagined that this season would come down to this injury list.

Am i alone in thinking that the WBC participation was a major distraction and injury fest on our guys?

        • In other words, post hoc ergo procter hoc…

The clues match up, but let’s not play the WBC card here…in my opinion, it was just a series of unfortunate events.

The baseball gods just aren’t on our side

        • Mets5rocks says:

WEll, considering that every single player that participated is either on The DL or isn’t performing as they should with the exception of WRIGHT and even he isn’t been the David Wright of old. You have to atleast look at it.

          • jamie_ says:

oh, I don’t know…the only thing missing is the homers. And it’s funny: this is what so many were talking about w/ Wright…”cut down on the home run swings, and he could be a .350 hitter!” Well, here it is. I’m happy with either version, frankly. DWright is awesome.

      • better yet, ravi, what did the Mets themselves do to deserve this?

as fans, we should never feel like we are “owed” anything…but you can’t possibly not feel for the players at this point.

it obviously takes a toll mentally on everybody, because every day you come to the ballpark someone else is going on the DL, which means the only remaining players (wright) put even more unnecessary pressure on themselves…hence the ridiculous amount of strikeouts

        • 2009_believe says:

i agree, this is just beyond ridic there is like nobody still healthy its beyond discouraging for fans and the players have to feel it worse.

          • wlaadair says:

It is beyond crazy, Wright has to feel it the most being that he is now the only core player remaining, and physically does not seem that much better than those who are going down, and that is scary.

  15. mark4212 says:

You can’t script a novel that is as sad as this. Seriously this has gotten BAD.

If they could somehow stay afloat it would be a miracle.

  16. jimyager says:

OMG!!Its gonna be a BLOOD BATH, I was looking at perhaps a split, if the baseball gods smile on us, now, I will be happy if we can win one game of the four. Then on the the Yankees, where I also hope we can win 1 game. If we can come out if this 2-5 I will be happy. LETS GO METS

    • One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

in order for us to go 2-5 the imposter that has inhabited David Wright’s body is going to have to leave and he is going to have to learn how to hit 88 mph fastballs over the fence again. We can not afford to have the only piece we have left slapping the ball around and hitting for average anymore

      • wlaadair says:

As long as you remember that this is what the fans are asking, for him to swing for the fences, isn’t that what got him in trouble with so many fans not that long ago?

        • Mets5rocks says:

SPOt on man, Wright swinging for the fences is the last thin this team needs.

  17. ToastyJoe says:

The good news: No collapse this year. If we’re even in the mix in late August, it will be a miracle of biblical proportions.

  18. One Day This Team Will Kill Me says:

If anyone thinks that this team is not going to lost the next seven games they are crazy. It would be a miracle to take 2 out of the seven. The phillies are going to wake up soon, we just can not hang around with 7-10 guys (depending on who you are talking to) on this team that dont belong in the major leagues, I mean this is sick at this point

Wilson Valdez, Fernando Nieve, Elmer Dessens, Pat Misch, Fernando Tatis hitting cleanup when he is finished, Nick Evans, Omir Santos, Jon Switzer, I cant even believe my eyes as I type this

    • Mets5rocks says:

Well for all the people who advocated not making any trades or outfiled help in the offseason……….here u go! Carefull what you wish for!

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

omar has never put together a complete offseason but at this point he shouldnt make any moves bc there is no point the season is over. The term band aid on a bullet wound doesnt even do it justice getting 1 player would be like putting a band aid on headless body.

        • Mets5rocks says:

I agree, no one player is going to make the kind of impact we need (atleast not in the next 2 weeks) If they get Reyes and Beltran back before the deadline than maybe. But right now the Mets are in a desperate position and other GM’s know it so they will overprice their talent to the Mets. It just doesn’t make sense to do a trade right now.

  19. mark4212 says:

The Mets will recall Fernando Martinez, Elmmer Dessens and Misch, while Takahashi has been optioned to Triple A and Wilson Valdez has been designated for assignment.
    —————————————————————–

So now there is no SS/2nd backup. What is going on with the roster. I don’t get on Omar that often, but you can’t give Castillo or Cora a day off now. Why would you put yourself in this position? Who could play 2nd or SS. Tatis?

    • Mets5rocks says:

Well, I think you guess it Tatis is your back-up at short and 2nd, meaning that Jerry will have to play Murphy almost full time at 1b which might not be a bad thing. I think they had to make that move. Valdez while a slick fielder is clearly not a major league hitter, or atleast not one good enough to come off the bench and generate any power as an Evans or Martinez or a SHeffield can which is what they need more..

  20. wlaadair says:

What in the world is going on with these transactions today? is it a full moon or something?

Nothing is making sense right now, i am pretty much praying that the sky opens up and tonight’s game is rained out so the remaining players can get their bearings.

I don’t really expect too much from any of them tonight after today’s events, sorry to say.

  21. dave56dj says:

making a trade now seems like a moot point. Reyes, Delgado and Putz are gone for a while and I would guess Tran will be back after the all star break. Not sure how one bat will be able to keep this team afloat. Unless they find a player who will be around for a while I would not trade any significant prospects…rather get the youth some expereince. I know it seems like giving up, but with only one significant bat in the lineup I’m not sure there is any other option.

    • mark4212 says:

Now you wait and see. If the team somehow miraculously hangs around until the deadline. You are getting positive news from Reyes, Beltran and Delgado. Along with Putz, Wagner, Maine, Perez.

Then you can possibly look to trade. Other wise the only trades you can look at are ones for guys you expect to have on the team for the future.

  22. hotcorner5 says:

this is going to be a long two plus weeks. i might as well just tune out.

      • wlaadair says:

i second that, these guys need the fans now more than ever.

      • hotcorner5 says:

i don’t recall saying, “i quit” or “we’re done for the season” (which i’m seeing in droves since 4:00)… however, anyone who thinks the next two weeks will be easy to digest is crazy. it ain’t over, and all of these injured players will be back.

        • “might as well just tune out”

sounds like “i’m not going to watch at all” to me…which, in essence, is “I quit.”

I hated when this team got good a few years back and then all of a sudden mets fans came out of the wood works…nothing drives me more nuts than a fair-weather fan.

you, my friend, are exhibiting the behavior of a fair-weather fan.

you’re right, these next few weeks aren’t going to be easy, but you bet your $#@ i’ll be right in front of my computer watching every single pitch. that’s what TRUE fans do…

  23. jay15 says:

the only one with any type of a time table is Delgado and that’s August. Do rain outs or anything like that matter because we don’t even know when/if guys like Reyes and Beltran will be back.

I kind of feel bad for Matt and his staff that he has to keep following this team daily in order to provide content for this site. This is a good a time to take a nice long vacation from this team

  24. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Ok so I may have said this before but now I mean it….SEASON OVER. “Dr.” Omar Minaya says Beltran out 2 weeks? ok so that means 6 weeks at least.

    • of course he says two weeks, because that would be 15 days…

if he goes out there and says he “may” be out 6 weeks, how does that affect ticket sales 3-6 weeks from now, as compared to if he just says 2 weeks?

it’s business, people…besides, Omar is just saying what the team doctors are telling him

      • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

I get that. I also don’t trust a word that ever comes out of anyones mouth regarding injuries and ALWAYS assume its 10X worse, like church, reyes, maine etc.

        • agreed…those cases they totally botched them.

however, that was on the medical staff and team decisions, not PR. I could care less what they tell me, as long as they don’t do anything stupid that could be detrimental to the players…

  25. ticket sales are going to plummet…as if they were selling before

  26. for those who wanted the core broken up, here you go…

    • JINBK says:

Haha, even those clamoring for the core to be broken up didn’t envision replacing Reyes and Beltran with Cora and Reed.

Honestly, if you’re in Beltran’s situation, it’s tough to keep going out there hurt and gutting it out and hitting .330 and diving in the outfield when a guy like Perez get a 3 month vacation because he walks 6 batters a game.

  27. cousinrk says:

I love these turn back the clock nights/months the Mets are having these days. I just didn’t think turn back the clock to 1996 was the best year to do it. This lineup is just going to be rough to watch.

This series DW and Fat Albert will probably be walked about a dozen times each. Pujols because he’s Pujols and Wright because there is no point in pitching to him.

    • There has yet to have been any point pitching to wright…almost every day either F-Mart, Church, or Tatis was hitting behind him…

notice when sheff hits behind him he does better?

  28. methead says:

    HAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA

  29. 2009_believe says:

can this many injuries seriously happen to us? how many opening day players are still playing. It is a real bad blow to loss beltran. I just cannot believe this. I just hope he comes back in two weeks, i wonder if this team can stay afloat, its not like they have been doing well lately that being said anything can happen so let’s go mets

    • Murphy, Wright, and Castillo are the only ones left…and two of those guys were HUGE question marks coming into the season, and everyone knew they were essentially platoon guys, so basically, just Wright.

Where are all the “chemistry” and “grit” arguers now? I’d sure love to see how good the Phillies are without Howard, Ibanez, Werth, Victorino, Blanton, Myers, Lidge, Bruntlett, and Stairs…

      • 2009_believe says:

It would be nice to see Murphy really step it up, the team really needs him and Church to start hitting right now and tatis just better not ground into any double plays

        • Mets5rocks says:

I agree on Murphy and Church, but that is Fernando DOUBLE PLAY Tatis you are talking about! lol

          • fernando tatis must think there are ghost men on base every time he comes up because he swings for the fences like the bases are juiced or something…someone should tell him this isn’t street ball

    • Sylow59 says:

they need a faith-healer at this point

  30. cousinrk says:

When are the open tryouts at Citi? I got my glove, I’m ready

  31. 2009_believe says:

Livan Hernadez will be pinch hitting tonight

  32. cousinrk says:

Yeah in two weeks they could be 7 games under 500 with the schedule they have and the team they are putting out there.

  33. methead says:

    WAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  34. derxmasta says:

david wright is now captain by default…

if wright goes down next then we can pack it in and forfeit the rest of the season

    • wlaadair says:

The freight train has not been invented that will knock Wright down, but anyone who is not concerned for him now more than ever has no business calling themselves fans.

  35. I’ve been badgering him all year, but the guy who I feel sorry for the most is Jerry Manuel…this is not a major league team he is managing.

he must feel like Lou Brown right now

  36. wynton says:

    Elmmer Dessens? Pat Misch?

    Are these even real people?

  37. WSeda22 says:

For those that wanted the “core” broken up…

Ladies & gentleman, boys & girls, Welcome to your new 2009 New York Mets!

    *Completely new “core” of players.

  40. Sylow59 says:

    Warning: Longer than I expected.

Evans is up for what, 2 days? FMart is down for a few days and now back up. How does that make sense? Don’t they lose an option on him because of this? And didn’t they just send him down because he was overmatched? How did he magically improve in a few days? AND Pagan is suppossed to be ready in a week. What happens than?

After all their exposure to injuries how can someone at the Mets not watch Beltran a tad closer. I would think they would be hyper-vigilant at this point. At this point I hope they fire the medical staff and hire a faith-healer.

Tatis is now batting clean-up and there is a valid point about Church batting clean-up. Reread that. As of now Sheffield is the only Met on a pace that gets him close to 20 HRs. If not for Sheffield, Livan, and a pitcher dropped by the Astros the season would be already gone.

    I am also guessing:

    1) Reyes is not doing as well as the Ministry of Propaganda leads us to believe.

    2) The reality is that Putz and Delgado are toast – and any hope of getting any draft choices next year are also toast.

    3) It has become clear to them that Perez is a complete head case and Maine’s injury will make hime the bullpen’s high ERA specialist come August.

I am saying all of this sober.

I cannot see how one player materially changes things. Getting what we actually need to acquire at least 3 or more near all-star level players (OF/1B, SP, SS – did I miss anything, I’m a bit shell-shocked at this point) and structure it in such a way not to impede next year and beyond.

I cannot blame Omar for the injuries. Think about it, the Mets starting 8 + 5 SP + S/U + Closer are roughly 50% major league and 50% journeyman at this point. You cannot have that level of redundancy. But I can blame him for the roster “moves” in-season.

I can also not blame Jerry for the injuries, but I can blame him for the random lineups and the fact he believe he has an 8 man pitching staff.

I am guessing that these roster gyrations are for one of four reasons:

    1) They are catapulting mid-range Major League talent (ex. Church, Parnell, Murphy, …) for what they can get. Maybe bring Mejia, Thole, Holt to AAA. Letting FMart run the season and see what happens.

    2) Land a semi-blockbuster salary dump driven trade.

    3) the “wing and a prayer” scenario where we get the likes of Konerko, Tejada, Griffey, and Pedro and hope they have one last breath.

    4) Omar’s version of roster management involves the use of a blindfold and a dartboard.

Maybe something good is afoot, but I am losing hope.

  41. 2009_believe says:

everybody needs to do some shots and let’s hope we can take this game tonight, support our team, let’s go mets!

  42. jimyager says:

The only thing that makes me smile is what the Phillies are saying. If we think that METS have played bad look at the Phillies. nThey are 1-8 and we did gain 1 game on them. They are saying we are the defending WS Champs, and, we are still in first place, sounds familure to me ..hmmmmm

    • Mets5rocks says:

They can say what they want, but as defending world champions with the way the rest of the NL East has played you would expect them to be up by ten games by now! Kinda puts it into perspective how poorly they’ve played! Not that I’m complaining as it’s allowed the Mets to hang around. Philly pitching (or lack thereof) is going to be their downfall and if they Mets by the grace of God can hang around till healthy we might just be okay. Alot depens on what happens over the next 2 weeks to a month.

  43. Agee's Catch says:

I’m stumped by Omar’s lack of activity. the best moves are made in June when they have a longer impact, rather than the July 31 deals which are panic moves at best. Adam Dunn would cure much of what ails us.

    • Mets5rocks says:

I’d agree with you on Dunn before Beltran went on the DL. But now that he has teams would likely just pitch around Wright and Dunn. Why give up prospects if the player you get gets walked too much to have an impact? Now if they are still in it when Beltran and Reyes get back then I’m with you I think Dunn makes the most sense for this team. The Nationals price for Dunn was the moon, that was prior to 4:30 p.m. Now that price has likely risen to include the moon and the stars as rival GM’s know the Mets are in a desperate position. That said perhaps Beltran going on the DL prevented a trade of prospects we might have regretted down the road. Maybe a silver lining Idk but one things for sure, now is not a good time to go shopping when we need 2 impact players and only have the trade bait for one!

    • cousinrk says:

Agee, they are missing 3 of their top 4 bats, 2 of their top 4 starters and their 8th inning reliever, what move do you want Omar to make that will fix this situation? Is there a player that can pitch twice a week, and hit leadoff and in the cleanup spot?

There comes a point where you can’t make enough moves to make a difference. And the reason no deal has been made is because teams are asking for way too much. Why give up what prospects you have for one player when they need more than that.

  44. Nate W. says:

Dessens? His numbers are good overall but he’s been in a bit of a slump lately. He’s also pitched the last two days so is availability is kind of limited…

Eddie Kunz must have really given them a bad impression last year because he is also pitching well and was already on the 40 man roster.

  45. Nate W. says:

In fact they don’t really need 13 pitchers, they just need a few more than three or four than Jerry Manuel will use…

Tatis as the backup SS could be interesting as well. I would have held on to the nearly useless Valdez a little longer.

    • Mets5rocks says:

They didn’t have much choice on that move, they had to have the pop off the bench. ( See the Met/Philly series every time Charlie manuel brought in a lefty reliver) The only RH batt on the bench on the time was Wilson I’d be lucky to get it in the outfield Valdez! Due to the fact that Jerry eroneously started both Sheffield and Tatis in the same game…..twice! UGH!

      • Nate W. says:

But they replaced Valdez with a pitcher…
or are you saying Dessens is a better RH PH?

        • Mets5rocks says:

No, I’m saying that Jerry “I’m only using the guys with the hot hand” Manuel has got the pen worn out to the point that they have to call in reinforcements! Not too mention that Jerry had to preserve the RH Pop off the bench which is where Evans comes in and Valdez takes his exit. (See the Mets / Phillies match up the past series) Because there will likely be many games where Sheffield and Tatis Start, you have to have someone Right Handed to come off the bench with some pop for the late innings and clearly Valdez cannot be confused with a RH Bat with pop! This was the exact problem against the Phillies in the lasts series. Jerry started both Sheff and Tatis in the same games and on both occasions in the late innings the Mets had runners on in a key situation against a lefty pitcher and who did Jerry have on his bench that was R Handed? NOne other than Wilson Valdez. That likely cost us atleast one off those very important games and I for one am glad they finally addressed it. Had Evans not been struggling earlier in the year Valdez would never had seen the major leagues but for a couple of days.

          • Nate W. says:

but that argument has no validity because they called up a 13th pitcher and got rid of Valdez. Evans was already here to fill that need, which I agree was lacking before Evans was called up.

They have the pitching re-inforcements without going to 13 pitchers. In fact they already had them in Stokes and Switzer.

Unfortunately being able to field a major league defense at all times is more important than having 13 pitchers.

I get the feeling that Misch won’t be here long anyway, he was a long man candidate in case Redding had a bad night.

  46. bvaz says:

IF and that is a big IF Beltran can miss 23 weeks and come back healthy, it is not the end of the world. I mean, what can you do? it is a knee bruise and he tried like hell to play through it.

I don’t know. what is the scenario? hope to be around 5 games back at the all star break? I mean, the Phils can’t lose forever.

one game at a time. let’s win one tonight. let’s hope they eventually get some good news with reyes.

    man, this just sucks.

    • Nate W. says:

unfortunately I don’t think the bullpen can handle a win tonight
In the last six games Feliciano has pitched in all six, while Green and Parnell have been in five. Count those three guys out.

Stokes and Switzer are the set up guys tonight. So they need a 10-2 game tonight. Either way, just not another close game where Manuel will use the same guys again.

  47. Nate W. says:

    John Maine rehab update.

He threw 4 innings in a FSL game today. 2 hits, 3 BB, 1 K.

I would have liked to see him go a little longer since it was reported that he threw 60 pitches last time. I cant see how he threw much more than the same.

    • bvaz says:

thanks for the update. he didn’t trip on the bullpen steps, did he?

man, the last 2 years have sucked but all I wanted was a fair shot at the Phils this year with the best team winning.

I mean, it wouldn’t be as bad if we thought jose would be back for half the games beltran missed. argh. frustrating day.

  48. ravi3 says:

The only way the Mets can stay alive now, is for David Wright to step up, and not just assert himself, but also prove himself as the leader of this Mets team.

There were times when Piazza just put the team on his back and went off – Wright needs to do that. If he can, he will show us all that he is worthy of being the guy, and on the level as Mex and Piazza…

    • I agree, but being the true “leader” of this team does not necessarily mean going on a tear right now…even if he does, who will pick him up? This lineup is awful, and small ball is gonna have to win us a few games here and there while we try to just stay afloat.

BTW, Wright has carried this team numerous times to no avail…most notably, August and September 2007.

  49. kd bart says:

Now, more than ever, they’re going to need their pitching to come up big. Also, they’re going to have to scratch out every run they can. They can’t sit back and wait for the big inning. It’s going to mean a lot of stealing, hit and running, and bunting to move guys around.

  50. Agee's Catch says:

    Time for “Phat Albert”

He’s my favorite current player. So far, he’s not linked to the juice. He is putting up incredible numbers each year. He is very capable, if healthy of passing Bonds. From a historical standpoint, one could say, “here’s a guy who didn’t need to cheat to be great”

  51. Agee's Catch says:

I know we have a bunch of holes to fill, but two of our starters should be back by the all star break, sliding Redding and Nieve to the bullpen. Milledge can play CF, and Pagan is also due back soon.

Jim Edmunds would be a nice pickup. we know he can cover ground.

So if Adam Dunn can be had , isn’t he enough to make up two games in the standings?

    • Mets5rocks says:

Agee, I hate to break it to you but…………Edmonds’s range has dwindled to about that of Fernando Tatis (which is not bad, but clearly not the Edmonds of old and certainly not CF quality) Milledge isn’t even it the Mets organization any more, and if Nieve keeps pitching the way he is it will be either Perez or Maine who find themselves in the bullpen. With that said LGM!

    • bvaz says:

Milledge. ha. thanks for the laugh. the centerpiece in the manny ramirez trade can’t even crack the major league roster for the Nats.

man, what a life to be a Mets fan.

sorry for the cynicism but these injuries and talent that hasn’t panned out just has taken its toll.

but anyway, win tonight and tomorrow will be a bit better.

    • cousinrk says:

No Dunn isn’t enough to make up 2 games unless you are expecting the Phils to lose 8 out of every 9 games over the next 2 months. The team needs more than Dunn, that’s the whole point. One player isn’t enough. Before Beltran went down they needed to add a couple of players to compete, now with him down they need 3 most likely

  52. Two shots and six beers later, I’m ready for this game! LGM!

  53. Great first inning…not one single ball

good things happen when you pitch low in the zone with accuracy

  54. Mets5rocks says:

Good news,…We scored 2 , the bad news,…..we once again made the last out on a base running blunder at third base! UGH can this team get out of their own way?

    • bvaz says:

yeah, especially when both runners should have tagged up on church’s ball. 2 would have scored and santos would have been on 2nd on the throw home.

I won’t be negative tonight until parnell comes in.

  55. There’s Tatis for ya…wow, way to kill a rally fernando…

I can’t wait until F-Mart is back in the lineup…I hate seeing veterans make STUPID mistakes like that

  56. mr.gee21 says:

Don’t know about everyone else, but I am turning off the tv now that we have the lead, and I’m just going to imagine that it alllll works out well in the end.

    • hahaha, wish it was that easy

      • Mets5rocks says:

I hear ya, as bad as things are I still don my Mets gear, and watch with hope,………the hope that somebody on the mets coaching staff can teach these guys to freaking run the bases!!!!

        • Yep, me too…we watch because you hope for that miraculous run from an underdog team (which the Mets now are)…

who on here actually thought the mets would come back and win game 6 of the 86 world series when they were down to the last out?

  57. wow…small crowd on here tonight during the game…i feel like a loner

  58. SantanaCYYOung says:

another dp by tatis…i have a feeling the mets won’t score again this game

  59. Mets5rocks says:

Fernando “ground ball double play Tatis! Ugh!

    • Mets5rocks says:

Looks like the Mets whacked Bobby Kielty as well! Must they are getting ready to do some promoting.

      • idk who will come up to AAA, though…

Ike Davis to AA, and Havens will likely follow before the season is over.

Flores and Marte will probably spend another full season in Savannah, however, so AAA will be running thin

        • Mets5rocks says:

Where is Thole I can’t remember?

          • Good point…I’ve been wanting them to promote Thole to AAA all season…he’s in AA hitting .345/.413/.450 with 19 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, and 27 RBI in 60 games…

He will be in New York to start 2010, you watch

  60. Santos should by a lottery ticket tonight after the game

  61. metsfan1 says:

I have never seen a team have so many injuries especially to key players. Our 1b, SS and CF on the DL. That in addition to 2 starting pitchers and a setup man. Plus at various times we were down a catcher for over a month, our RF. I mean this is ridiculous. I was at the Long Island Ducks game yesterday and their are more recognizable faces then the Mets.

    • Not only position-wise, but lineup-wise as well:

      1-injured
      2-castillo
      3-injured
      4-injured
      5-wright
      6-church
      7-murphy
      8-santos

      bench:

injured, injured, injured, injured, injured, injured…haha, J/K, but it seems like it

And as you said, the rotation:

      1-santana
      2-pelfrey
      3-injured
      4-injured
      5-hernandez

      • Nate W. says:

hehe, of the bench to start the year two of them are starting just about everyday, one was traded, one released, one is slumping, and one is fine…

  62. Mets5rocks says:

Daniel Murphy strikes again! Woo hoo! what an at bat!

  63. I think Murphy is glad his buddy Nick Evans is back in NY…i wanna see Evans get some ABs

then again, maybe i just love it when a young kids chooses a classic like “mary jane’s last dance” as a walkup song

  64. SantanaCYYOung says:

dp tatis, he is so last year

  65. Mets5rocks says:

Fernando “ground ball DP” Tatis strikes again!

    • Chiefman says:

Tatis is a killer. Human DP machine. And he’s batting cleanup why? Church should be hitting 4th tonight.

And isn’t it comforting to know Tatis is our backup at SS and 2B.

Sorry, but he should be DFA’d. He is KILLING the offense when he bats with a man on first.

  66. Tatis has grounded into 8 double plays this season, leading the Mets along with Carlos Beltran who also has 8…

but when you consider the fact that beltran has nearly 150 more ABs than Tatis, that is insignificant…you’re right, SantanaCYYoung…Tatis is so last year

  67. cousinrk says:

Well as bad as the Offense is battered, its going to have to be the pitching to buckle down and with Ollie and Maine on the way back, hopefully it becomes a strength.

If you look at the last 4 series they have lost and gone 4-8, you can actually pin most of it on the pitchers. The two phillies losses they had multiple run leads that were blown by the starters. The O’s series, Feliciano gives it up in a tie game late and then Frankie blows it the next night. Rays on Sunday Parnell blows it. The other three losses on the trip were the Castillo drop, the 15-0 yankee game which you can blame both pitchers and hitters and the Santana game against the Rays in which the Offense is totally to blame. Yes of course the offense could have added on more runs at points but when one aspect of your team is shorthanded, the other parts need to step up and they need to rely on the pitching to carry them for now on.

  68. Mets5rocks says:

Ugh, Redding has got to get that ball down!

  69. Mets5rocks says:

7 innings 4 hits 3 runs from Redding! I guess we can’t argue with that.

  70. 2009_believe says:

oh man another homer 5-4 we need to score a few more runs, let’s keep it here

  71. SantanaCYYOung says:

oh no! the bullpen with a one run lead and pujols up third

is it me or is the opposition hitting way more homers than the mets at citifield?

  72. 2009_believe says:

yes the opposition does hit way more homers than the mets at citifield when the mets get up it is very rare that i think somebody will hit a homerun but every guy on the other team even if he has no homers i am like terrified that he’ll hit a homerun as two of the cardinals have done tonight

now we leave it up to jon switzer yay

  73. 2009_believe says:

stokes v. pujols would a dp be too much to ask for?

  74. SantanaCYYOung says:

why not bring in frankie for a 5 out save?

  75. 2009_believe says:

    put him away stokes

  76. 2009_believe says:

    haha yeah even i’m surprised!!!

  77. 2009_believe says:

this game chat is very quiet today

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

its been like that for a while, maybe many people didn’t get cleared but still

  78. SantanaCYYOung says:

    tatis needs to sit

  79. ericloz says:

It’s Amazin how they pulled it off.

lets go for two in a row.
