Prior today’s game, Jerry Manuel specifically
mentioned Alex Cora and David Wright, saying both would need to continue to step up and lead this team in the absence of Carlos Beltran, who was put on the 15–day disabled list this afternoon.
Cora was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a walk, hitting leadoff during tonight’s win against the Cardinals.
Cora, speaking to reporters following tonight’s game, said:
“It takes more than five superstars to win a World Series. Tonight was a total team effort. Stokes comes in, in that situation, and gets the best hitter in baseball to hit in to a double play. That’s what it’s going to take, you know. Fernando Martinez gets on a plane, shows up in the seventh, and gets a bunt down… Murphy hits a home run. You know, it’s a total team effort. If you’re gonna talk about team wins, tonight was a great example and that’s what we need to do.”
…i like this message… i’m a sucker for the underdog, so i find i am extra excited to root for this current group of players, knowing they’re looked at as being down and out, with reporters and other fans making fun of them… this is a different kind of a challenge, and i’m glad a guy like cora is around to help lead the fight…

I really like Cora and he has really stepped up in a spot where we needed him and he’s right, this team needs to suck it up and play like they played tonight, its not use worrying about the guys on the DL, this is the team we have right now
as one who’s skeptical of intangibles winning ballgames…
…me too!
also, anyone else notice Pujols not run out that 8th inning DP? I guess he’s not a gamer, and has no heart
/kidding, mostly
don’t think you should be kidding Jamie, I have seen this more than once from Pujols, he routinely dogs what he sees at the “sure play” and gets NO FLACK for it because of his “statistics”
i am just amazed that pujols grounded into a double play
that being said, i will admit, i love this team, let’s go mets
funny… i dont see any of the people that were preparing to jump off bridges now that the mets won…but tomorrow if they lose all the complainers will come back on…after wins this place isnt nearly as crazy as losses…go figure
It’s a good win. But as you like to remind everyone not to get too carried away after losses, let’s not get carried away because of tonight’s W.
no need to jump off a bridge after a loss, its not quite time to pop the champagne after a win but man do the wins feel better than losses.
I like Cora. Player/manager? :)
It’s a solid win, but if there’s anything these Mets have taught us, it’s not to get our hopes too high.
How about the Cora signing? Remember how everyone was killing Omar for “over paying” for this guy. Fact is, he provides leadership and he can be a starter when you need him. He was a big pickup.
I have to say this Omar has come out smelling like a Rose on Cora and Castillo who despite dropping that one pop-up has really given everything the mets could ask for. I feared that dropping that catch alone would had derailed his season, but like a true pro he is still out there battling and doing well.
I was thinking the same thing about castillo. Aside from that terrible F up, he’s played as well as anyone could expect.
The most incredible thing in last night’s game was that long double hit Castillo hit to left center. Who figured he could drive the ball that far batting lefty. Watch the replay and you’ll see hesitates before he starts to run hard….maybe even he couldn;t believe how hard he hit it. The guy had a very nice game all around and you gotta give him credit for his resilience after that popup thing vs. the Skanks.
hopefully tonight can boost the teams confidence now that they know they can beat even the elite teams in the league if they play crisp baseball
Hopefully now we don’t have to wait another 5 or 6 days to see Stokes pitch again!
Yes! Gary called him the “8th Inning Guy” now. At last. I like Parnell, but he’s young. The ups & downs are part of the ride. Do you want ups & downs in the 8th? Eh, not so much…
Off Topic: MLB Trade Rumors put this up for discussion asking the following question. If all 30 teams got to remove one contract from their roster who would it be? Overwelmingly Oliver Freaking Perez came rushing to my mind! What do you guys think?
absofreakingloutly agree. Might end up worse than LC’s contract.
stop paying Bobby Bonillia
Here here, Matt! I thought Cora was a great signing. It was Cora on the DL that had me more worried than Delgado, Putz, and (almost) Reyes. He knows how to win; he knows what it takes. And I’ll say again: Murphy & Church need to play their respective positions every day. Every day. THat should never have changed.
Last, glad to see Jerry admitting he was raping the bullpen. Sending Redding back out in the eighth? I’m for it.
I realize this is supposed to be a happy night, and lord knows we don’t get many of them. But I must say one thing about Razor Shines…the guy is off his rocker and a horrific 3rd base coach!!! It seems that every time he has to decide on whether to send a guy or not he makes a bad decision! If you look at just tonights game, he twice sent a player home when they easily should have been thrown out. Omir Santos was safe at home because molina missed the balled which arrived about five steps before he came in. Also, Castillo was pretty out but received a gift from the ump. Maybe it’s just me, but this happens way too much!!!
Since Nieve is pitching so well, Redding is obliged to step it up; as he did last night.
Competition is good!
Can’t wait for more of it.
If Murphy CAN play first, Reyes and Beltran come back and Johnny Maine is OK; we are as good as anybody!
Delgado and Wagner remain long shots to return (and in what shape, if they do?)
From what I can see, Murphy has the potential to be an excellent first baseman. He fields the grounders and pop flies like a third baseman, he covers the bunt well and he will learn the necessary foot work and tricks for picking up the low throws. If he sticks to first base, I think he could be a gold glover some day.
