Update, 5:03 pm:

Mets GM Omar Minaya talked earlier today to WFAN’s Mike Francesa.

To listen to the entire interview, go to WFAN.com.

the way i hear it, from what he said in this interview, minaya is not interested in trading a ton of young talent for a rent-a-player… also, the big bat fans keep hoping for is just not available on the trade market… instead, though he’s always looking to improve the ballclub, the reality is, he and his staff will need to be creative in any deal they make, and they’re most interested in acquiring a player who can be part of the team’s future

Minaya did mention Brad Holt, Jenry Mejia and Ike Davis when he was asked if he holds young players, who do not get a lot of publicity, that other teams have interest in.

By the way, Minaya said Davis has been promoted to Double-A.

In the end, Minaya said he is not interested in only trading for a player who will be here for ‘a month, or a few months,’ while adding, ‘To make a trade, just to play catch up, that, to me, is dangerous.’

in other words, if the Mets make a trade, it’s more likely going to be for a player who can play first and outfield, and he’ll be young enough and under contract through at least next season to warrant parting with young prospects

Original Post, 12:53 pm:

Mets GM Omar Minaya will be a guest of Mike Francesa today on WFAN around 4:30 pm.

To listen live, log on to WFAN.com.

…by the way, for some reason, Emmanuelle Chriqui repeatedly turns up when i search images of minaya on Google… i have no idea why this happens, but i like it…

…in other words, yes, tell sloan i said what up…

Speaking of Francesa, and the Mets…

This morning, he and WFAN held a breakfast with Jerry Manuel at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York City.

Of the 200 people who paid to attend, 20 were allowed to ask Manuel a question, including Steve Keane from the Eddie Kranepool Society.

Manuel answered questions about the leadership of Alex Cora and Johan Santana; the health of Jose Reyes; coping with injuries; hoping for a trade; and pitch counts; among other things.

To read more about the event, check out Keane’s blog.

Damn, I didn’t know who Emmanuelle was and after looking her up, I have to agree with your assessment.

I like it too.

JINBK June 23, 2009 at 1:37 pm

Interesting to hear Manuel say ‘This is David’s team’. Of course we’ve known this to be the case and have speculated on the influence of other veterans, but I don’t believe I’ve heard Manuel say that.

Well, for better or worse, I’m all on board for the David Wright era.

Patrick June 23, 2009 at 2:03 pm

I’d like Wright to hit a homerun during this era, some time, this decade.

Chan Ho Parking Lot June 23, 2009 at 2:05 pm

So would I. The ground ball singles don’t seem to be helping enough. It may actually be better for him to start taking uppercuts again. For the way this team is built, it might be more valuable for him to hit .280 with power as opposed to .350 with none.

wlaadair June 23, 2009 at 2:09 pm

is that what everyone wants? David Wright has been getting tons of singles and doubles, many of which are RBI’s or setting himself up to score.

He has worked his butt off to level his swing to go back to being the type of hitter he was in 2005.

By encouraging him to swing for the fences and that his avg is a fluff stat, we are sending him a message that only long balls count and the little things do not add up.

Xavier22 June 23, 2009 at 5:20 pm

why does it have to be one or the other? Can’t he adjust his swing depending on the situation?

Razor Shines June 23, 2009 at 6:51 pm

No. Changing your swing to hit a home run, like some do for the one hour during the home run derby, can affect you for weeks.

mark4212 June 23, 2009 at 9:44 pm

Like it did when David Wright was in it in 2006 where he had 20 HR’s before the HR derby and only 6 the entire 2nd half of the season.

It can happen and it will happen. I think his Homers will come. If he’s hitting at a 350 clip and hitting deep doubles he will get some HR’s. I don’t know if he will get 30 HR’s for the year, but i think he will make it to 25.

wlaadair June 23, 2009 at 2:07 pm

Patrick,

As long as he keeps getting on base (3 times a game on average and driving in runs, fans should be fine with him.

If Jerry is saying “this is David’s team” then he should be named as official captain, that would be showing trust and respect.

I know the strikeouts have been alarming and disappointing, but they should go down, and they will come in spurts, nothing anyone can do about that, Jerry will not bench him for that if his other at bats during the game are productive.

Razor Shines June 23, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Evan Longoria has struck out as often (per plate appearance) as Wright, and is hitting 50 points less, but because he has more HR through 65 games I hear people say he better. 85 RBI for a WS team at the age Wright had 105 on a 3rd place team. All the steals. It’s just crazy how people think because Wright is streaky, he should be able to stay hot an entire season. I bet in five years, when he continues this production but does not get better, people will begin to appreciate what he is and not what he could be.

If Delgado and Reyes were on their way back I would say sell the farm and go for the title but it looks like their not. Now Beltran is hurt, the boat has too many holes to plug. Lets this play out keep your chips for the offseason and make a FA splash

Andrew June 23, 2009 at 1:49 pm

Dude. Can Emmanuelle Chriqui hit?

steadyeddie June 23, 2009 at 1:52 pm

Mr Matt? When I Google Omar, I get Omar. What you been lookin’ at on that computer of yours?
But hey, thanks for the tip. Emmanuelle is a peach!
Biggest charge I got since Benson left town!

stickguy June 23, 2009 at 5:10 pm

Well, Omar is at least saying what I have been preaching for a while.

They have a lot of holes to fill for next ear anyway, and this collection of prospects is the primary rsource pool to do it. Especialy cince FA doesn’t look very exciting this off season (and of course, for the few peaches, super expensive).

So, either trade for a 1 year salary dump (giving nothing valuable back but taking on salary) or trade real talent for a guy that helps now, and can be a main cog for the next few years after.

You can trade good prospects for crawford or Rios. Not Nick Johnson.

WSeda22 June 23, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Agreed. I’m glad that Omar has his head on straight and understands that possibly the best course of action is no action. Let the (remaining) guys play their game and let’s see where we can go. We had too many unrealistic expectations to begin the year with anyway:
*Ollie being Good Ollie.
*Maine coming back without any problems after surgery.
*A 37-yr-old 1B repeating last years 2nd half numbers throughout a whole season.
*Having a deep rotation with Redding or Niese ready to slide into the rotation whenever Livan gets shoved out (doesn’t look so deep now that both Maine & Ollie went down, and Redding pitching inconsistently).
*Putz returning to form.
With that said, the Mets have had some unexpected things happen (good & bad):
*Reyes going down.
*JJ Putz undergoing surgery.
*Santos making his way to The Show.
*Nieves pitching successfully.
*DWright playing Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde
*Cora’s leadership.
The list goes on… With all of this, I’m just happy that these guys are at least still competing!

Id definitely look to trade for carl crawford. The rays have a surplus in the OF and he has a 10 million dollar club option next year that they may not want to exercise bc in the end they are still a small market type of team. For the mets 10 million dollars for crawford is a bargain he is in his prime and would make a SCARY combo with reyes at the top.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 23, 2009 at 6:10 pm

All of SNY, including LoudMouths and WheelHouse, yell and scream how the Yankees misused AROD by playing him everyday after coming off of hip surgery… and that is the reason for his poor performance.

Wait a second…… wont Delgado have the same issue? Won’t he need to be babied the same way? To think Delgado can some how come back and succeed where AROD could not is pure folley!

Delgado is done. Stick a fork in him. He will not help this team in 2009.

JefJarrett June 23, 2009 at 8:34 pm

Couldn’t the fatigue be a spin by the Yanks? How come people seem to be forgetting he was named as testing positive for PEDs while he was out with this hip injury…..none of this is mental with him?

mark4212 June 23, 2009 at 9:47 pm

What they planned to do was sit arod once every 5 games. They didn’t and now they think they rushed too much too soon.

If you think sitting Delgado once every 5 games, but he is hitting is a bad thing. I don’t know what to tell ya.

Lorenzo23 June 23, 2009 at 6:30 pm

I agree and disagree with you kickedinthemetsicles again (by the way – love the name lol). I agree that we cant expect Delgado to produce right away which is why we need a big bat NOW but I disagree that he is done.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 23, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Hey Matt:

Take today’s game. Who do you think the Mets needed more tonight– Delgado or Maine/Ollie. The right answer, as per the fans, is Delgado (meaning offense), not Maine/Ollie as per your override over the fans on national TV.

More often than not Livan has given us a quality start. Nieve has as well. Note, Ollie even last year was hit or miss. Half the time he gave us a quality start and the other half he did not. So even if you had Ollie back he would not be that much better than our over achieving 5th starters. And Maine, well, he was up for a while and he also failed to give us length.

As for HR power provided by Delgado, who has stepped up and replaced such production? Answer? no one. Mets are near last in HRs.

Based on the above, I think you should trust your fan base. Its offense that is most missed (i.e. Delgado).

Lorenzo23 June 24, 2009 at 8:27 pm

agreed

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 23, 2009 at 10:17 pm

Tatis needs to moved out of the fourth spot. His DPs are killing us.
