The next time they lose the love affair with scrappy under achievers will turn into a new round of roast Jerry Manuel and Omar Minaya live on WFAN.

If this team manages to tread water that is to say play .500 and lose little to no ground between now and the all-star break they will have done the unthinkable.

Anything better than that will be a welcome mirage until at least Beltran and Reyes return.

Great analysis. I was at the game last night and had this exact convo with my father; how nice it is to root for a team that has no expectations of success all while watching them succeed.

In fact, Ted Berg wrote a great article capturing the feel of watching such a team when he wrote about watching the 90's teams with his brother.

Its not even so much about the underdog; its about letting baseball be fun, relaxing and engrossing on a day to day basis without making me stress and lose sleep like I have the past few years.

Lets Go Mets!

how many of these "gritty and resilient" fanboys were screaming for Manny or other huge free agents in the offseason and were pooh-poohing Omar signing guys like Cora for $2 mill?

We lost 4 series in a row... That is called losing last time I checked. If the Phillies havent struggled we would be 10 games out and wouldnt be hearing about the "scrappy" mets. Come on guys lets be realistic!

Winning a championship is more special and exciting, regardless of the salaries of the players involved. I'd rather field a team of the best players, regardless of their amount of grit, leadership, hustle, etc. We'll see if Mets fans are still rallying around single rallies if they're 10 games out in August.

I like watching a team that wins.

I don't care if it's a $200mm dollar roster full of Bentley driving primadonnas or a $50mm team full of grits and hashbrowns...I need to see wins and solid baseball.

Any labels, to me, are exactly that...labels

Matt (and Music Man Phil), there is some validity to embracing this ideology. Still, it's killing us not to have a bopper in the lineup who we can count on for 30 to 40 dingers. Sometimes you need that 3-run homer (apologies to Brian Schneider) to help put the game away and we just don't have that.

"i prefer to root for this type of team, i.e., the scrappy, over-achieving hustlers, so long as they’re winning…"

Well, exactly. I would root for a team of lemurs wearing Mets jerseys, so long as they're winning.
