The Mets lost to the Yankees by the score of 5-0 tonight.

The least you should know:
Tim Redding pitched well through five innings, but a Jorge Posada three run home run broke the game open as part of a four run sixth inning.
Meanwhile, AJ Burnett allowed just one hit through seven innings for the Yankees – an Alex Cora single in the sixth inning – with the bullpen completing the first one-hitter thrown against the Mets since September, 2006.
Cora had been 0-for-21 lifetime against Burnett before that single.
Misc., Etc., and Other Observations:
Since the seventh inning of the second Subway Series game at Yankee Stadium, the Mets have been outscored by the Yankees 30-to-2.
The entire lineup looked completely overmatched by Burnett tonight – once the Yankees scored in the third inning, like last night, it didn’t seem to matter how many runs they scored after that.
It doesn’t help that David Wright and Ryan Church are a combined 0-for-15 in this series so far.
The Mets have had a total of nine base runners in this series.
One bright spot was that the bullpen pitched 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief tonight.
Livan Hernandez will face off against Chien-Ming Wang in the Subway Series finale tomorrow night at 8:05 pm.
Alex Cora will leadoff tonight, followed by Argenis Reyes at second base, David Wright, Ryan Church in right field, Gary Sheffield in left field, Daniel Murphy, Jeremy Reed in center field, and Brian Schneider is catching.
Tim Redding (1-2, 6.08 ERA) will start tonight for the Mets. Redding went seven innings against the Cardinals on Monday, and allowed four runs and five hits, but walked just one. He is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA in June.
AJ Burnett (5-4, 4.24 ERA) will start tonight for the Yankees. Opponents are hitting .252 against Burnett this season and he has allowed 14 home runs. He is 3-4 with a 3.75 ERA in his last ten starts.
Update, 4:00 pm:
Jose Reyes ran in the outfield this afternoon at Citi Field, however he did not run at full speed and he told reporters that it is unlikely that he will return before the All Star Break.

The MLB Network is showing Game 5 between the Mets and Astros from the 1986 National League Championship Series.
First of all, it is a treat to watch Dwight Gooden take on Nolan Ryan – what a match up. I forgot Ryan had such a strong curve ball, as I always think first of his fastball. And Gooden, for all his power and intensity, is so fluid and poetic in his movement.
Lastly, I never noticed this before, but the fans in the stands look like regular people, wearing regular clothes, and could be dressed for any place, be it the movies, out to dinner or at work.
Today, fans in stadiums are decorated in team hats, jerseys, jackets, player t-shirts, etc., but, in this game on TV between the Mets and Astros from Shea Stadium, I only see a one or two people in traditional blue hats, while spotting the occasional satin jacket.
I assume this is the result of some post-1994 strike deal regarding licensing and merchandise between teams and MLB. Either way, for whatever reason, it’s a stark difference between how fans dress now and then.
Last month, SNY.TV’s Ted Berg and I took a trip up to Buffalo and Binghamton to check out the team’s minor-league affiliates.

Mets GM Omar Minaya talked with reporters before yesterday’s game, and discussed his effort to improve the roster through trade.
Minaya, when asked if there is a deal available that could make a significant impact, said:
“That deal is not there right now… I think there are 22, 24 teams that are within playoff striking distance. So, there’s not a lot of guys… The pool is not that big.”
Minaya did acknowledge that his priority is to acquire offense.
In case you missed it, the other day I wrote:
…from what i can gather, because of the current economic conditions in this country, there is a record-level premium in the market place on true prospects… i’m not talking about mid-level minor leaguers, or teenage talent… i’m talking about upper-echelon players, guys who are close to contributing… this is why, i bet we see more deals like the Oliver Perez and Robert Hernandez for Xavier Nady type deal from 2006, or the Jae Seo and Tim Hamulack for Duaner Sanchez and Steve Schmoll type move… old-school baseball trades, involving zero-to-three guys and players who fit needs… in other words, put on your thinking cap when drawing up mock trades…
This past week, the Mets were linked in rumor to Rockies OF Ryan Spilborghs and 1B-3B Garrett Atkins, which you can read here.
In his most recent report for SI.com, Jon Heyman said the Mets and Phillies among 10 teams that can add payroll in a mid-season acquisition.

The Least You Should Know:
In the second inning, the Yankees sent 10 batters to the plate against Mike Pelfrey, who gave up four hits and a walk, during which David Wright, Alex Cora and Nick Evans also made errors, giving the Yankees a 4–0 lead the Mets would never overcome.
Regardless, the Mets could only muster three hits and one run against CC Sabathia, who struck out eight.
Misc., Etc., and Other Observations:
Here’s the thing, I can forgive injuries, I can accept when the other pitcher makes his pitches, etc., but sloppy play will always be difficult to digest. There is really no excuse for Wright and Cora, the team’s co-captains, so to speak, to team up for dueling mistakes. This happens, you lose, end of story.
I am getting concerned about Pelfrey, who is looking more and more like Oliver Perez, in that he is on point, dealing, then, just totally loses his head, gives up a handful of hits and runs, and then gets reentered. I’m glad he gets back on track, but that one inning can be devastating.
The reality, though, is with the way Sabathia was throwing last night, it probably wasn’t going to matter.
The silver lining: Every team in the NL East lost last night.

The Mets play the Yankees again tonight in Citi Field at 7:10 pm, with Tim Redding taking on AJ Burnett.
