Dyer 18: Is it possible that if the Mets continue to struggle, and find themselves in third or even fourth place in the division, will Omar decide to trade one of the core players in order to acquire some young talent?

Matthew Cerrone: Well, they’d have to tank hard in the next two weeks or so, because the trade deadline is 27 games away, and I don’t see that happening.  Of course, they could put players like Livan Hernandez on waivers, and probably get a low-level player in return.

That said, as frustrated as I am right now, today, I still believe this team is capable of reeling off a hot streak, especially in September, especially if Carlos Delgado, Carlos Beltran, Billy Wagner, J.J. Putz, John Maine and Oliver Perez return, and hopefully Jose Reyes.  I mean, think about that?  Why give up if you can remain in striking distance, get those players back and get hot at the end?  There is still more than half of a season left to be played.  Believe me, I am as frustrated as the next guy, but it would be foolish to suggest the season is over in late June, especially considering how poor the rest of the division is, and how many players could still return to play a big chunk of games.

Bill Meakem: Jerry Manuel correctly said late last week that if you produce you will play.  Can someone please then explain to me why it is that when Ryan Church is scratched due to flu symptoms that double-play machine Fernando Tatis and not Nick Evans replaces him as the left field starter?

Matthew Cerrone: I have no idea, Bill.  I really don’t.  I don’t understand why Manuel repeatedly says one thing, than does something else.  Tatis was a great story last season.  But, he’s batting .223 in his last 109 at bats, and has just three extra base hits.  What’s worse, at this point, even I know to pitch him inside, because it’s essentially an automatic ground ball.  Now, Evans is just 4 for 10, but at least he’s 4 for 10.  So, play him.  Play him, Murphy, Ryan Church and Gary Sheffield, and be done with Fernando Martinez and Tatis for now, because these guys need every drop of offense they can find.

Jaime D: Why do you love Bobby Parnell so much and refuse to include him in trades?  Just because he throw 96 mph does not make him a great pitcher.  He needs secondary pitches, as we have seen in the last couple of weeks.  If a team wanted Parnell and player X, I would do that in a minute for the right guy.  There are a lot of guys who can throw hard and become 8th inning guys.

Matthew Cerrone: A) I do not love Parnell, I like him, and B) I too would trade Parnell and Player X for the right guy.  The question is: Who is the right guy?  To me, it’s not Mark DeRosa.  It’s not Adam Dunn.  Look, I like Dunn, and think he’s a perfect fit, but I do not think he alone will make much of a difference on this current roster.  And so, trading away a young pitcher with Parnell’s potential, to me, in this situation, to plug one hole when so many others remaining, would be a foolish move.

    Now your talkin’, Matt!
August 19, 1969, The Metropolitans were 9 1/2 games out and in third place behind the very talented Cubs and Cards.
    The rest is history.
If ya don’t believe in miracles, you can’t be a Mets fan!
    Ya gotta believe, baby!

  2. dykstraw says:

there is a 0% chance that we can acquire a better offensive player than adam dunn this month

so: i think you’re saying we should stand pat, and i agree

  3. Jaded1983 says:

“So, play him. Play him, Murphy, Ryan Church and Gary Sheffield, and be done with Fernando Martinez and Tatis for now, because these guys need every drop of offense they can find.”

    Bingo Matt!!!!

Evans in LF, Church in RF, Sheff 3 days a week, Murph at 1B, and Reed in CF

Send FMart back down and put Tatis on the bench. I try to find a way to put a positive spin on Jerry’s tactics (mostly just to calm myself down!) but I cannot rationalize why he would play Tatis over Evans and continually bench Murphy?

    1. Cora SS
    2. Murphy 1B
    3. Dwright 3b
    4. Church RF
    5. Evans LF
    6. Reed CF
    7. Schneid/Santos C
    8. Castillo 2B

Clearly not the most dreaded lineup out there, but all those guys can get on base with a decent amount of pop and/or speed. And thats the best we can hope for right now.

What we need right now is a few things before the heavy hitters come off the DL.

    1. Consistency in the lineup
    2. Consistent playing time for Church, Evans, and Murph
    3. Play GOOD FUNDAMENTAL BALL
    4. Pray Omar doesnt make a trade for the sake of making one. Please continue to ride the storm Omar.

  4. Agee's Catch says:

How much better would Wright & Beltran be if Dunn were hitting between them? How can you under estimate the impact of a guy who can hit 40 HR and doesn’t chase balls out of the zone?

    • ohboy says:

      BINGO!

    • steadyeddie says:

Mr Agee, my frustration is that Dunn could not find a contract last winter; that is to say we could have had him and thus a Plan B for Delgado’s hip question mark.
And we would not have to trade away future talent for him.
The key word for ‘09; frustration!
I say hold the line til the troops return from the DL!

      • ohboy says:

It is frustrating, but you can’t think that way. A mistake was made, let’s not make another one.

If he can be had for the right mix of Parnell and b-level prospect(s), you have to do it. He’ll compliment the Calvary perfectly when they come back

  5. Agee's Catch says:

BTW Dunn is on pace 40HR/100RBI/100BB pace – again. Anyone on our club going to do that? What a bum! Why do we need this kind of production? His defense is shady? How can you not want this guy on your team?

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

how could we not sign this guy this offseason? oh yea i forgot he was supposedly a worse LFer than daniel murphy and murphy was going to hit 330 this year.

      • Razor Shines says:

No, Matt agrees — Dunn is a perfect fit. What he then went on to say is that the team needs more than Dunn, so instead of getting the one guy who fits this team right now and trying to stay alive until the other players come back (and Dunn fits in then too, and in 2010), we should try to stay in it without him and then later get someone like him. Makes no sense to me.

  6. theperfectgame says:

So the suggestion, Matt, is to play Gary Sheffield and his 40-year-old legs in LF, Ryan Church out of position in CF, and Nick Evans, a converted 1B, in RF, as your everyday outfield? I’m starting to think we should acquire Adam Dunn as a defensive upgrade!

Until Angel Pagan or Carlos Beltran comes back, Fernando Martinez, .160 BA and all, is the only real answer in CF. You just have to bat him 7th everyday, and hope something clicks, all the while knowing that these are growing pains and he’s getting valuable MLB experience. But if he goes 2 for 5, don’t move him up to 2nd.

Your other starters are Ryan Church in RF, Gary Sheffield in LF, and Daniel Murphy at 1B. Play Nick Evans once or twice a week at 1B and 2 or 3 times a week in LF.

I don’t see any available bat out there that would make enough of a difference to be worth taking a bite out of a farm system that is just starting to eke its way back into ‘respectable’ territory. Even though it hurts, the best thing Omar can do right now is nothing at all.

    • Mets5rocks says:

I agree 100% on everything you said. As for Murphy, I think alot of people are getting upset at the wrong person! Sure Murph struggled in LF defensively, but he was hitting, then he started taking the defensive issues to the plate and we saw the results. But after that point I can’t blame Murphy at all for his performance. I mean what do you expect when Jerry jerks him in and out of the lineup, up and down the lineup, and when Jerry finally got it right and let him play first not only did he play well defensively, but with consistent at bats in the same place in the order Murphy started hitting! After which Jerry started benching him inexplicably every time the wind blew Northeast. Meanwhile playing the (currently worthless) HUman GBDP machine in Fernado Tatis! How in the world is Murphy going to get in the groove at the plate if every time he goes 3 for 5 Jerry sits him for three days! It’s downright ridiculous! I mean if Tatis is tearing the cover off the ball and driving in runs , then sure maybe you play Tatis, but tatis has been downright horrible! When is Jerry going to get a clue? Make out a lineup with the guys who are actually producing and be done with it! Don’t change the lineup everytime we lose a couple of games it’s counterproductive! Jerry has completely shattered an already battered injury riddled team by overmanaging to the point that even Omar MInaya has got to be scratching his head right now!

  7. Razor Shines says:

Frankly, I cannot for the life of me wrap my head around this comment:

“I like Dunn, and think he’s a perfect fit, but I do not think he alone will make much of a difference on this current roster.”

If he will not make a difference on this current roster, how is he a perfect fit????

    • steadyeddie says:

First off, Mr Shines, STOP sending guys around third with wild abandun!
That being said; he means Dunn may replace Delgado; but we still are missing Betran, Reyes, Putz, Perez and Maine and what they bring to the team.
      See what he means?

    • JINBK says:

However Razor, when we have runners on first and second and are down four in the seventh inning, you CAN send the runner from 2nd on a hit to the outfield because no outfielder who has any sense at all will let the runners get to 2nd and 3rd.

You are probably the worst 3rd base coach I’ve ever witnessed.
