Oliver Perez will next start on Friday for Triple-A Buffalo, after which he could be activated, Jerry Manuel told reporters before today’s game.

According to Manuel, the Mets received positive reports on Perez following his last rehab start in Brooklyn.

In a post to his blog for the Daily News, Adam Rubin reports on Billy Wagner, as well as John Maine, who will not pick up a baseball until Thursday.

Let’s hope we get Good Ollie back, if not, Bad Ollie gets his walking papers back to the Minors, no team would take him and his $36 million contract.

I know he was hurt…but he reminds me of the movie “The Scout” in that he could really use a sport psychologist although he probably wont ever pitch a perfect game and hit a HR in the same game.

UGH! God help us! You would think that the return of a guy that was supposed to be our #3 starter would bring inspiration! But sadly I find myself shaking my head and praying for the good ollie to show!

Why activate him for one start July 8? He won’t pitch again until after the ASB — and then he’ll be #4 behind Santana, Pelfrey & Livan. So that means he doesn’t pitch til July 19 at best.

Let him stay on rehab, pitch July 3 & 8 with BUF, July 13 with St. Lucie (hi minors are on ASB too) and then be activated after the break.

That also means that Omar can option Nieve after his start on the 9th, and get another bat for the bench for the last 3 games before (and first 3 games after) the ASB…if they have a bat at BUF that can help, of course.

If Nieve keeps pitching like he has you don’t want him going anywhere considering right now his head is where it needs to be, and if you send him down (why u would pick him, I’ll never know) there is no guaranteed his head will be right afterwards. In other words if it ain’t broke don’t fix it! You want a bat? fine send one of the extras out of the bullpen down and put Redding there.

Valid point about Nieve — IF (and only if) he’s still lights-out by then.

My concern is that Omar does a “Figgy” with someone else: DFA’s them, and pisses them off, and maybe loses them.

Perez would likely pitch the first game back from the AS break because Santana and Pelfrey are pitching the last two before the break. That would only be on his 7th day so its not that big a layover.

Probably a good game for him anyway since the pen will be well rested. :-\

plus if Nieve bombs in Philly you probably move him to the pen.

One start away from what??

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 6:20 pm

Another 4 inning, 6 walks, 8 runs and 1 K outting!

Why ? Because your approach makes too much sense….therefore, the Mets will never consider it….
