The Brewers defeated the Mets, 10–6, tonight in Miller Park.
For a full recap and boxscore, go here.
The Least You Should Know:
The Fernando Nieve Train came to a screeching halt, as he allowed 11 hits and three runs through one out in the third.
The Mets pulled to within one run in the sixth, on a bases-clearing double from Brian Schneider, but the Brewers immediately rebounded with a game-breaking grand slam from Casey McGehee, which put the game out of reach.
Misc., Etc., and Other Observations:
David Wright snapped an 0–for-16 stretch, with an RBI double in the ninth inning. By the way, he really picked the wrong season to go for a batting title, and forgo the home runs, given the number of injuries and lack of power on the team.
Nieve was overthrowing, had little command of his fastball and got hit very hard. He even let up an RBI single to Braden Looper. Yikes. He must get at least one more start, though. No doubt.
Speaking of Nieve, why does everyone at SNY keep calling him, ‘a journeyman pitcher,’ when he was with the Astros organization for his entire career before coming to the Mets?
The Mets left two runners on in the second, and left the bases loaded in the fourth.
The Mets put together five straight hits in the ninth inning, to score Gary Sheffield hit is 10th home run of the season, and absolutely crushed a ball thrown up and over the plate, hit deep to left center field, to cut the Brewers lead to four.
I can’t take solace in knowing the team scored six runs, because, they did it against the back-end of the Brewers bullpen when the game was a bit of a blow-out. Sorry.
In case you didn’t notice, Mets are now one game below .500.
The Mets continue their series with the Brewers tomorrow night in Miller Park, at 8:05 pm, with Johan Santana taking on Mike Burns.

If Nieve got a little defense the game couold have been different.
Argenis is a Reyes, but he is no Jose (nor a Cora).
The porous defense and spotty pitching made the Brewers be the Bruisers.
I will never quit on the Mets, but I will say these past four games –on top of all the other crap we’ve been through starting with 2006 NLCS– have been spirit crushing.
Yeah its hard to call a 26 year old a journeyman.
Its so ugly, so ugly, its just way too hard to watch
There are still like 90 games left.
fortleemets, yes there are 90 games left and with the injury situation, poor play and lame managing it’s hard to feel good about those 90 games. No matter how poorly the Phillies play how we can be considered a serious contender with all our problems? Don’t get me wrong I will root for them EVERY SINGLE DAY, but this is very, very painful to endure. And if Beltran goes for this second opinion surgery from the guy in Colorado he may well not be ready to play until next May or June.
Chief, Are they saying Beltran needs surgery?
Mets4ricks, here’s what I saw on possible surgery for Beltran.

This is really embarrassing I know people are hurt but spending $150 million you would think this team would have some depth. I have a feeling these 90 games are going to be like going to the dentist. I want to rebuild! I hate this team- Players ,coaches and Ownership . Omar too
I’m gathering a lot of you weren’t around in the late 70s. The lineups you’ve seen the past couple of weeks were a daily staple between 1977-1982.
Don’t you be dissing on Pepe Manguel and Bruce Boisclair now.
kd, I’ve been around since 62 so I’ve seen all the ups and all the downs along the way.
Honestly, how does anyone expect this group of players to go .500 over the next month? We won’t see Reyes, Delgado or Beltran until at least after the All-Star break. This team will be lucky to go 12-18 in that stretch.
They can’t score more than 3 runs in a game (tonight 2 were a gift from McGehee and 3 were in garbage time) and outside of Santana, don’t have a pitcher who can hold the opposition under 3.
Neive is only 26, and since he had TJ surgery a few years ago, he is really just an older rookie finally gettin ghis chance. Not that abnormal. And for sure he deserves another chance.
With a depleted roster, this team has to win with defense and pitching. Considering that both lately have been making the Offense look good, that’s a problem. No way this team can afford to waste a 6 run “outburst”.
there are 87 games left, but realistically, how many can they win of the 12 through the ASB? 5? That puts them at 42-45 with 75 to go (and is probably optomistic).
They would have to go 45-30 (.600 exactly) from the ASB on to finish with 87 wins, which likely still doesn’t get the WC. And that is with, at best, a gimpy Beltran and Ollie added to the mix after the break.
All things to consider when deciding what to trade for the big “push” this year. Especially since it seems quite likely the WC is going to take more than 87 wins.
and I really hope that Parnell rebounds at some piont, if he was the deal breaker to any trades for worthwhile players!
Poor Parnell. The kid looks completely lost…not just on the mound but in the dugout, too. ESPN closeup of him was tough to look at after he pitched the 8th. Confidence must be at rock bottom. I really feel for him. And of course I feel for us, too.
then send him down to get his head together, and work on his secondary pitches.
Call up Kunz and give him a shot.
Honestly, what can we say…The defense has been horrible to say the least. There is no consistency with this team. I guess you could say poor decision is coonsistent. Sometimes, Jerruy makes the worst decisions but who can we really blame, Omar, Jerry or the players.
This year has been the worst. If I remember back correctly, (during ST) didn’t SI has the Mets going to the top. What a jinx. Well I hope Santana wins tomorrow.
Just came back from the game after experiencing our first Mets loss at Miller Park after going 4-0 the previous two seasons. We’re hoping for better results when we go back to attend the next two games.
As many have stated in previous posts today, I can’t figure out what A. Reyes was doing batting first. He is an automatic out, and it was humiliating seeing his batting average tumble below .100 on the Miller Park scoreboard. I could feel all the Brewer fans laughing at this pitiful display of futility.
Usually, seeing the Mets have 13 hits and 6 runs would be a cause for celebration, but not when their AAA pitching staff is giving up 19 hits and double digit runs. It was very sobering.
I also noticed a lot less Mets fans in the stands at Miller Park than I have the past two seasons. I guess that’s what happens when we field a spring training split squad team.
I have come to the conclusion that this is just one of those years. Other teams have it and their fans don’t jump off bridges, we need to suck it up.
Also Nieve still put in a quality start. 3 runs. Had the bullpen done their job we would have won this.
Being realistic is not the same as jumping off bridges.
I do remember the 70s. Being less than double digits below .500 at any time during the season was exciting times back then. We did not know any better and we did not care.
Expectations (and ticket prices) are a little higher these days.
My point is that 2009 does seem to be one of those lost seasons. Lets not make stupid moves now that will make 2010-2015 one of those lost half decades. And yes, I know there are 87 games to play, but the indians are circling and the calvary is not coming in time to save us.
I am not giving up NOW, but I am trying to be prepared for the drop off in the standings that should already have occurred and most likely will occur.
Point is … if prior to the trade deadline we are double digits out … we should not hesitate to be a seller if doing so will strengthen our chances in 2010 and beyond.
A Colorado type run to end of the season is fun to think about, but not realistic even if Delgado, Reyes, Beltran, Pagan, Putz, Wagner, Maine and Ollie are back at full strength. And we know they wont be at full strength.
Too bad, Putz and Wagner will not be healthy enough to trade at the trade deadline, we know they wont be back in 2010. But what about Redding? What about Livan? Are these guys that would be around anyway in 2010? Could trading these guys bring back meaningful talent?
If bringing in a power first baseman is the answer, then, by default, doesn’t that make Murphy expendable (since he would be blocked at first and not able to play a sound OF position)?
Is Niese anything more than a #5 starter?
These are things to think about. It about being prepared for that scenario. Am I rooting for this to happen? No. Would I prefer the Mets to hang within striking distance until the calvary is able to arrive? You bet. Am I rooting this AAA team on? With tums and a barf bag in hand, absolutely and will continue to do so.
Interesting thoughts on being sellers. It might just get to that point early enough for Omar to be convinced as well. Generally its tough to be sellers and build for next year, much easier to build for years down the line.
Redding is under the Mets control through arbitration for at least next year. I wouldn’t hesitate to trade him if it gets that bad, but its not like much will come in return for a rental starter. We would probably be better served with Niese in the rotation though to see what he has for 10 starts or so.
Hooray Wright drove in a meaningless run. Meanwhile the entire rest of baseball the Mets face continue to hit homeruns left and right.
OK, so I was wrong about the score, I predicted a loss of 5-2, and we losy 10-6. We still lost. Here is the thing, even if we get back Reyes, Delgado and Beltran, what makes anyone thing that they will all be hot at the same time? It has aint heappened yet. That means we have 4 real hitters in the line up, we still have 5 pieces of garbage. And, the rotation is still a big question mark. We have lost 5 in a row and won only one series out of the last 5, that aint good. When is the last time we have won more in a row than we have lost?
Three great lies:
Check is in the mail
I’ll still respect you in the morning
We’ll get a power hitter if we fall under .500
Wright is either not clutch or trying too hard.
Tatis needs to be ONLY a PH.
After it was 3-2 I flipped to another game watched a while, ccame back, saw one pitch-the Grand Slam. Flipped away again, saw one pitch, the game ending DP. Pretty much describes the season.
“Speaking of Nieve, why does everyone at SNY keep calling him, ‘a journeyman pitcher,’ when he was with the Astros organization for his entire career before coming to the Mets? ”
The word journeyman has nothing to do with being on multiple teams — there is no journey they are taking. It derives from the definition of journeyman in the professional world, where craftsmen who are not good enough to be masters in their field are called journeymen. Nieve is a but young to be considered someone who will never be a master, but the point is he doesn’t have to have Elmer Dessens passport to be one.
Start the rebuilding. Omar should let every GM know that EVERY ONE on the roster is available.
Sure we may have 90 games left but we are no closer to getting the core of this team back then we were a month ago. Beltran – DONE for the Year. Delagado DONE for the year or even a career. Reyes big freaking deal…Even if he does find a way to get on base no one can score him anyway.
…not one mention of Brian Stokes bombing when it was a one run game?
Nieve had nothing, that is for sure, but they overcame that with defense and got some help to be right in the game at 3-2. If Stokes hadn’t come up so small they might just win that one.
oops , my bad, I wasn’ t serious..lol just frustrated!
We are all frustrated. Dont look know, but we are in trid place, and, the Braves are knocking on our door, now. This just keep getting better all the time. Has this team put us through enough yet? How bad can things get? we suffered through 2006 and Beltran watching strike three, and, then 2007 and 2008, when will this team have some pride and play with heart and deterinmation? when will they give us loyal fans something to cheer about, rather than make excuses for? It looks like we wil have to look ahead to 2010.
Jim, not this year. The mets are fielding a Double AA team because, guys are hurt. How much of the mets Payroll is on the DL? Pathetic. I say, trade Reyes in the offseason to make the mets better.
