Pre Game: Mets at Brewers (Game 1)

June 29, 2009 at 15:50 pm · 99 comments

by Matthew Cerrone

Argenis Reyes will bat leadoff tonight for the Mets and start at shortstop.

i fell for it, the text with the lineup i got said, ‘Reyes SS leadoff,’ and i thought, for a split second, JOSE…but, no such luck

Reyes will be followed in order by Daniel Murphy at first, David Wright, Gary Sheffield, Ryan Church, Fernando Martinez in center field, Brian Schneider behind the and Luis Castillo at second.

Fernando Nieve (3–0, 1.31 ERA) will start for the Mets and bat ninth.  Nieve has not faced the Brewers since 2006.  Left-handed hitters are batting .125 against Nieve this season

Braden Looper (5–4, 5.16 ERA) will start for the Brewers. The Brewers are 9–6 in Looper’s starts this season.  He has thrown eight quality starts, including wins over the Cubs, Phillies and Cardinals.

Update, 4:51 pm:

In a post to Twitter, the Star-Ledger’s Brian Costa writes, “Jerry and Willie chatting near the batting cage… No word on whether Jerry offered him his old job back.”

Update, 5:51 pm:

Carlos Beltran is getting a second option from a highly-regarded doctor in Colorado, who is best known for doing knee surgeries.

Meanwhile, Carlos Delgado is ‘tracking his swing,’ though he has not yet taken live swings at a ball.

Here we go another day ……….another lineup! It really is getting rediculous!

starz31 June 29, 2009 at 4:29 pm

and we’re on national TV again…good to show the nation we are a quality ballclub

ericloz June 29, 2009 at 6:53 pm

Have we won a nationally televised game this year?

I can’t say I remember watching the Mets win a single game on the big screen the whole year.

mark4212 June 29, 2009 at 3:59 pm

BRUTAL…..

Patrick June 29, 2009 at 4:00 pm

this really should not be so hard for Jerry to figure out

Castillo, Murphy, Wright, Sheffield, Church, Schnieder/Santos, SS, Pitcher

Cora god love em and certainly not Reyes are not leadoff hitters.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I agree, that order looks pretty good, but your missing a CF!

Patrick June 29, 2009 at 4:28 pm

don’t know what happened when the post went but I had Martinez before cora

shawon_dunston June 29, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Why do we keep throwing out players in the lineup because they *look* like they should belong there? A. Reyes is probably the worst hitter on the team, and he’s going to get more ABs tonight than David Wright. How about allowing your best hitters to get the most at-bats, regardless of their position or body size?

I get that the Mets are injury riddled, but this type of overmanaging drives me crazy. A. Reyes isn’t a good enough hitter to reach the majors until late June, and now he’s batting lead-off, because he’s small and plays SS? Really? And it’s not like he had a great game last night either.

djshakes2 June 29, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Jerry took a look at him this afternoon and saw him blow the largest bubble he has ever seen with a piece of bazooka so he figured he has two hits in him.

Xavier22 June 29, 2009 at 9:51 pm

well played, sir. Well played.

doc strawberry June 29, 2009 at 4:02 pm

And the rest of the lineup??? Ah, I’ll go to the blogs and check myself.

RockfordMetsFan June 29, 2009 at 4:04 pm

I will take out my contact lenses and pretend I am watching a major league lineup tonight. Hopefully they won’t get too dried out so I can drive back home from Miller Park after the 3rd inning.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:05 pm

LMAO!

metsfan1 June 29, 2009 at 4:05 pm

A. Reyes in the lineup. Awesome. He has to be due. And why not put him in the 1 hole. I mean, we don’t want to have any chance of having players on base prior to our one threat coming to the plate. I guess Jerry’s thinking is that if Reyes gets good pitches to hit he will go 3 for 4. Guess again. I would rather see Johan Santana bat leadoff.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:06 pm

Who knows maybe Jerry is sending Omar a subliminal message! lol Bat needed now!…….SOS, SOS! lol

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 5:09 pm

maybe Jerry is trying to trick braden looper by putting “reyes SS” leading off this way he will be so confused that he will groove one and reyes will be able to get his only hit of the night and give the mets a chance to score first.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Here it is folks!

Reyes, ss
Murphy, 1b
Wright, 3b

pedros rooster June 29, 2009 at 4:14 pm

I’m not in the NYC area (Philly, in fact), so I don’t get to see Jerry’s postgames. Do any reporters ask questions like, “Tell us why you’d bat the absolute WORST offensive player on your team—one who has never shown any ability to hit/get on base at either the major-league or minor-league level—in the leadoff spot. Tell us. Why.”

Knowing that someone might ask this would help me feel just a little bit better.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:15 pm

I think we all have a few questions for Jerry! lol The man makes less and less sense by the day!

thedude June 29, 2009 at 4:36 pm

The performance of the Mets beat writers since Jerry has taken over has been downright embarassing. Few questions about the excessive bunting, the constant mental errors or mismanaged bullpen.

Everyone likes Jerry, so the writers have a few laughs with him after the game, mail in a game story and hit the buffet.

RockfordMetsFan June 29, 2009 at 4:15 pm

I’m also looking forward to seeing Carlos Santana (he was great guesting on American Idol), JJ Abrams (Lost), Thomas Hayden Church (Wings) and Robert Beltran (Star Trek Voyager) in the lineup along with A. Reyes. Should at least be visually and musically entertaining and funny. Great to see these guys back from injury.

steadyeddie June 29, 2009 at 4:41 pm

very creative
good job!
I really got a kick outta that

thekid024 June 29, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Argenis should not be leading off, and I’d like to see Evans in the OF instead of Martinez, put Church in center again. Shef, Church and Evans would seem to be the combo that would provide the most offense in the OF right now.

Castillo, Murph, Wright, Shef, Church, Evans, Catcher, Argenis,

buenosdiazfive June 29, 2009 at 4:19 pm

This lineup reminds me of the late 90’s early 2000’s teams….pre-Piazza….that had maybe one or two good players, and a handfull of guys that made you say, “who?” YIKES!!

starz31 June 29, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Maybe Martinez could benefit from the David Wright-2005 experiment in that, let the kid bat 8th and see some pitches b/c of the pitcher. Castillo has been ok this year, he could be ok at 7. Schneider at 6, ehh, but gotta crack some shells if you want eggs.

mark4212 June 29, 2009 at 4:33 pm

How is Castillo not batting leadoff? I mean he’s not great, but i can probably hit better then A. Reyes and i haven’t swung a bat against anything other then slow pitch softball since i was 16.

Lorenzo23 June 29, 2009 at 4:34 pm

Yes! Thank you so much Omar. You’ve heard the fans cries for help with the offense…. Argenis Reyes to the rescue leading off!!! hahahaha… This is absolutely comical.

The guy cant hit the ball out of the d@mn infield!!!!!

kd bart June 29, 2009 at 4:37 pm

I swear last September that there were a bunch of commenters on Metsblog calling for Reyes to play everyday at second instead of Castillo because he fit better in the lineup than Castillo..

Lorenzo23 June 29, 2009 at 4:42 pm

well you didn’t hear me saying it and for the guys that were saying it I don’t blame them cause Luis was a disaster last season.

wlaadair June 29, 2009 at 4:56 pm

everyone was tired of slappy and his lazy attitude, seems to be a changed person this year.

thedude June 29, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Argenis Reyes is literally the worst hitter in baseball. And if you’re going to be that bad, you’d think the man could get a bunt down. No, he can’t do that either.

So naturally Jerry wants him leading off. When he got called up, Jerry said “he showed us a little something last year.” He hit .218 with 1 extra-base hit in 121 plate appearances last year.

JINBK June 29, 2009 at 5:42 pm

What do you mean? Reyes was in the middle of every rally in every game he played last year. He just didn’t score any runs, or drive any in, or get on base, but he was somewhere in the middle.

steadyeddie June 29, 2009 at 4:43 pm

Matt, the natives are restless tonight.
We NEED a “W” bad….

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:55 pm

The natives are more than restless! They are going off the deep end! lol And can you blame them? I mean Argenis Reyes leading off????? I saw that and prayed it was a misprint!

bostonmetsfan June 29, 2009 at 5:16 pm

I saw the line-up and prayed for rain. But isn’t there a roof on the brewers field. Man, we can’t catch a break…

wnymetsfan June 29, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Maybe they will have it open and than a monsoon hits and they can’t get it closed. Heck happened Montreal that one time.

thedude June 29, 2009 at 4:50 pm

And can someone explain to me why Nick Evans has been buried the last 3 days?

He has two monster games against St. Louis, then gets one of the team’s 3 hits against a dominant Sabathia, making him 4-for-10 this year. And then he doesn’t play for 3 straight days? What happened to Jerry’s meritocracy?

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 4:59 pm

It’s simple really, if a guy shows he can hit and is getting comfy in the lineup, well then in Jerry eyes one of two things must happen: Either the player rides the pine for 3-5 days, or he gets put in a spot in the lineup he has no business being in! He drives me crazy!

AndrewMichaelZ June 29, 2009 at 5:08 pm

Haha! You beat me to that exact (almost) answer b/c my comp crapped out.

I am the kind of person that really hates to get on a manager, but things have gotten out of control. To continue the dead horse beating: how does this monarchy work. Does Jerry seek input on these lineups? If so, then I am even more concerned. I’d rather it be only him that is off the deep end.

And whoever said before about why don’t the reporters ask the tough questions, you’re right on. It seems that GKR are the only ones that ask the tough questions, but they only get to ask each other.

JINBK June 29, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Basically, Jerry puts guys in the lineup to get them going. So if you’re already swinging the bat well and make less than $5M, you’ve gotta sit so we can get our ice cold guys some at bats, or they’ll never get it going. Don’t worry, by mid september our entire team will be on fire and we’ll win out the last two weeks to get back to .500 and potentially a 3rd place finish for some modest respectability.

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 8:44 pm

Easy answer to that question, the dude, the manager is a bozo. He proudly boasts this “hey, you produce and you will play” line of BS and then as soon as Evans produces he DOESN’T play. It’s actually unbelievable that he gets away with this stuff with the NY media. Murphy batting leadoff yesterday and now Argenis Reyes batting leadoff…and both days you have Castillo with a high OBP batting 8th. It’s one thing for a manager to be this dumb…but how does he get a pass on this stuff from the press?

wlaadair June 29, 2009 at 4:55 pm

There is no rhyme or reason for who Jerry plays and where, one of these days he’ll figure it out instead of just complaining about who is not back yet.

euchreking June 29, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Yup, I feel used after last night, and starting A Reyes at leadoff makes me feel cheap and used. He has no buinsess leading off; I’d be surprised if he put the ball in play. Though maybe, just maybe, he’ll swing at a two strike pitch with runners in scoring position. I’d forgive everything tonight if we don’t have guys going down looking at strike three with runners in scoring position. Obviously I’m looking for small gains with this team. The only bright spot (please!) is that Nieves is pitching tonight so at least that might be enjoyable. I think that putting myself in a stress position and listening to blaring acid metal will be better than listening to the two guys who sat alongside Joe Morgan last night.

JINBK June 29, 2009 at 5:53 pm

You forgot one other bright spot (at least according to Mets.com), Beltran is still on pace to get the start in the All Star Game!!!!!
Wooopty F-ing Do!

mextache June 29, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Note to Jerry and Omar: I’m free most of the week, I could fly out to Milwaukee and bat leadoff…

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 5:04 pm

ugh this is just awful. Jerry, here I’ll make youre job easy…

castillo 2B
reed CF
wright 3B
sheffield LF
Church RF
Murphy/Evans 1B
Cora SS
Santos/Schneider C
Pitcher

No this lineup is not going to scare anyone but its about as good as its going to get (PS Tatis blows)

euchreking June 29, 2009 at 5:10 pm

I’d take this lineup–the question is, why is coming up with something like this so hard for Jerry?

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 5:13 pm

I dont know but if I send this lineup to the mets you think theyll give me Jerrys paycheck for that week bc that would be nice

thedude June 29, 2009 at 5:19 pm

There are so many potential lineups out there for Jerry that I’d take.

Anything that involves Argenis Reyes playing, let alone leading off, is unacceptable. Anything that allows Reyes and his bleached hair in the ballpark is unacceptable.

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 5:26 pm

no argenis reyes, and no fernando tatis.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 5:37 pm

Well for one you can’t start Reed in CF every game for two reasons: A) He’s no where near th CF Martinez is and frankly we need the defense! an B) If you start Reed then that makes F-mart the lefty bat off the bench! Who would you rather have to come of the bench with 2 on in the late innings: A guy still trying to find his stroke in the big leagues, or a guy who been around awhile and certainly has had his fair share of pinch hits?,,,,,,,,,I thought so.

Agee's Catch June 29, 2009 at 6:05 pm

I really like Reed’s 3 RBI. He’s clutch!

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 6:17 pm

Sadly Martinez has 7 Rbi, yet there are those who advocate putting Reed in the lineup over Martinez to Start.

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 6:49 pm

martinez needs to be in the minors not up here being over matched or on the bench

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 7:13 pm

This kid has proven at every level that after a slow start he hits well. Not to mention that if the kid doesn’t see major league pitching how is he going to learn to hit it? Fact is if Delgado and Beltran were still in the lineup we wouldn’t even be having the conversation, he would be playing LF with SHeffield spelling him and coming of the bench where he belongs. He’ll get it, all he needs is time and a consistent spot in the lineup!

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 8:24 pm

the kid is 20 years old he should not be rushed he has barely played AA ball Im not doubting the kids talent or potential Im saying he needs to be in the minors playing everyday learning how to hit how to approach situations how to prepare how to become a complete hitter, not up in the majors getting beat by fastballs and chasing balls out of the zone bc hes pressing and trying to live up to the hype. just to be clear i like fmart and think he can be very good but think he has a couple of years of development left.

Agee's Catch June 29, 2009 at 6:04 pm

I’m beginning to yearn for the days of Don Hahn, Dave Schneck and George Theodore

Craig K. June 29, 2009 at 6:04 pm

when will this all be over?

Agee's Catch June 29, 2009 at 6:06 pm

When Susan Boyle sings the National Anthem at Citi

Agee's Catch June 29, 2009 at 6:28 pm

Would you trade for Alex Rios? The Jays are rumored to be trying to free up money for Halladay

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 7:43 pm

theyd probably trade wells before rios but wells has SOOO much money left on his deal its not worth it.

jimyager June 29, 2009 at 6:52 pm

My prediction we LOSE 5-2 !!! Here is my reason: Looper is an old advisary, he mocked Reyes and Mets fans when they beat us in 2006 and won the WS. Nieve is due to blow a game, so, this will be the one. We just got sweept bu the Yankees and are on a loosing funk. And, if that not bad enough, we can look real good on natioanl tv. I predict PAIN tonight.

mr.gee21 June 29, 2009 at 7:01 pm

“Carlos Beltran is getting a second option from a highly-regarded doctor in Colorado, who is best known for doing knee surgeries.”

Why hasn’t this happened already? I mean, sure, I call a doctor for an appointment, I expect to hear their calendar is full for a month or two. But a multi-million dollar superstar? I’d think there was some way this would have happened already. What am I missing?

SantanaCYYOung June 29, 2009 at 7:14 pm

wow, they actually made looper throw a whole 10 pitches

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 7:42 pm

argenis reyes is not a major league player. a caller on WFAN made a good point today no omar cant be blamed for the injuries but the injuries have exposed how bad the rest of the roster is that omar put together

kd bart June 29, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Has it dawn on people yet that Daniel Murphy is not the major league hitter everyone thinks he is? The league has figured him out.

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 8:51 pm

kdbart, a month ago I would have said you were way off base on Murphy but it seems apparent that the league has decided to feed him inside stuff and he can’t handle it. He can’t get around on anyone and when he makes contact it’s usually weak ground balls. Thriw in his poor baserunning and scary defense and what we have is a guy who needs to go back to the minors to see if he can regroup. It’s entirely possible he simply is not a major league hitter. We already know he’s not a major league fielder. Other than all the injuries, Murphy is my biggest disappointment this year.

SantanaCYYOung June 29, 2009 at 7:52 pm

can anybody else say game over?
Oh and matt keep waiting for that 20-10 streak, it hasn’t happened since 06

kd bart June 29, 2009 at 8:07 pm

F-Mart, overanxious. Chases the first pitch he sees.

kd bart June 29, 2009 at 8:22 pm

I’m guessing this is the beginning of the end of Fernando Nieve role as a Met starting pitcher. They got more out of him then anyone could’ve hoped for,

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 8:52 pm

As bad as Nieve was tonight I can’t get on him because he’s pitched really really well prior to this game. We expected little or nothing from him and got a heck of a lot out of him so far.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 29, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Is it me or do you think of Cora was playing, Nieve would have faired better?!

Argenis is suppose to be quick, yet I felt that he was out of position and missed some defensive plays.

Now, General Jerry takes Castillo out and puts Tatis at 2B. Sorry, but Castillo at 2B give us a better chance.

General Jerry has be scratching my head again.

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 8:40 pm

Why did Jerry pull Tatis? Anybody know?

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 29, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Wow Scneider got cleated on the forearm. Could be another trip to the DL. I hope he is okay.

You dont run on Church’s arm!

Hit The Weights Zeile June 29, 2009 at 8:28 pm

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 29, 2009 at 8:31 pm

I love Argenis. One pitch … ground out. Great plan.

Why does Argenis make me think of Forrest Gump?

SantanaCYYOung June 29, 2009 at 8:33 pm

this must be the worst mets lineup I have ever seen. absolutely horrendous, btw u know beltran is getting season ending surgery

Mets5rocks June 29, 2009 at 8:36 pm

Where did you hear that?

jimyager June 29, 2009 at 8:36 pm

As I said before the game, PAIN. We are on our way to another Loss. It is now 3-0 and Looper got an RBI !!! Neive has come down to earth and will not make it much deeper into the game. The Marlins will be tied with us for second and after tommorrow we will be in third place and dropping fast. If we dont get some help its game over. There is no crying in baseball. Lets just forfeit the rest of the games and get it over with. I cant take it much more. this team is gonna kill us all.

Razor Shines June 29, 2009 at 8:56 pm

KL15 June 29, 2009 at 8:54 pm

Everyone, find something else to do with the rest of your summer. It’s not going to get any better this season and bringing in a bat isn’t going to make any difference. As a matter of fact, with the stellar job that Omar Minaya has done with building a farm system I would absolutely forbid him making any move at all. If we can get to the end of this season, hand out pink slips like your handing out bad Minaya contracts. This entire organization needs to be gutted and start over from the top down. The Minaya era had it’s run and it didn’t happen. Came close, but it didn’t happen. Just like it was a bad idea to get rid of Willie Randolph and bring in a clone Jerry Manuel, it’s ludicrious to keep the same people in place and expect a different result.

Razor Shines June 29, 2009 at 8:57 pm

It was a bad idea to get rid of Willie?

KL15 June 29, 2009 at 8:59 pm

Should have said that better, to get rid of him and not go in the other direction. It was like they were going one way, it wasn’t working, so they kept going the same way. That doesn’t make any sense to me.

Andrew June 29, 2009 at 9:14 pm

Completely agree — Manuel basically manages exactly the same as Willie did, except that he does it with jokes in the press conferences.

One word, one letter:

Bobby V.

KL15 June 29, 2009 at 9:21 pm

You know Andrew, there’s already an example of this. That’s what is so frustrating to me. I am in no way comparing the Mets to the Yankees please understand. In 1978 the New York Yankees were falling apart, the Brox Zoo and Billy Martin, through a series of events that are known to anyone who wants to look them up, Seinbrenner fired Billy Martin. He didn’t replace him with another Billy Martin type, he brought in Bob Lemon. Cool, calm, mild mannered. In other words, the complete opposite of Billy Martin, That’s how you do that. Bringing in more of the same gets you just that, more of the same.

KL15 June 29, 2009 at 9:21 pm

One more thing, ABSOLUTELY, BOBBY V!!!

KL15 June 29, 2009 at 8:55 pm

*ludicrous* sorry

Andrew June 29, 2009 at 8:57 pm

Man, we were totally due for someone to drop a routine pop-up so we could score some runs.

Andrew June 29, 2009 at 9:05 pm

I’m just gonna say this right now before anything happens: You walk Braun and bring in Feliciano to pitch to Fielder.

fortleemets June 29, 2009 at 9:48 pm

There needs to a be a team-wide effort for these players to get better at-bats. I want to see more walks, more working counts, more fouling off tough pitches.

I think we now realize how huge of a presence Jose Reyes is. Without him, more than any other injured player, this team is a shell.

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Well, so much for the legend of Brian Stokes. I can find a hundred things about Jerry I don’t like but I was never a believer that he was holding back Brian Stokes, Great Reliever.

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 9:55 pm

There is nothing to be gained from guys throwing chairs against the wall, smashing water coolers and tearing up the locker room. It is childish, destructive behavior.

But tonight would be a good night to behave like that just this one tme.

kd bart June 29, 2009 at 10:01 pm

And what good would it do? This team is just severely undermanned. Orel Hersheiser said it perfectly earlier. The Mets are fielding a team right now that might not meet MLB’s standards for a spring training road team. A team is required to bring 4 major league quality starters on the road with them in the spring.

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 9:57 pm

btw, Parnell’s body language is telling. When Fielder hit that double to the opposite field as soon as he hit it Parnell went limp and looked straight down…hw looked convinced that it was gone. I feel bad for this kid. He looked so good early and now he is getting hammered routinely.

KickedintheMetsiclesAgain June 29, 2009 at 10:04 pm

Is it the Brewers or the Bruisers?

Many our pitching staff and defense makes them look good.

Chiefman June 29, 2009 at 10:22 pm

The perfect finish: we will get the go ahead run on base and Tatis will hit into a game ending DP.

ericloz June 29, 2009 at 10:23 pm

6 runs and 13 hits, amazin’ but they didn’t win.

Poor fellows.

I wonder how team morale is? Can’t be good.

metsfan1 June 29, 2009 at 10:33 pm

Hey Cerrone. Can we officially add a FIREMINAYA poll to Metsblog? Maybe even set up a new page.

I know nothing will happen until the off-season but since it appears the Mets Brass reads the blogs regarding uniforms, obstructed seats at Citi, lack of Mets colors and memorabilia at Citi, I think we should also discuss our disgust with the GM for not having a minor league system that can fill in.
