The second opinion Carlos Beltran received from Dr. Steadman on his knee in Colorado provided a ‘reassuring diagnosis,’ according to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, citing a source familiar with the examination.
Instead of season-ending surgery, Rubin believes Steadman will recommend Beltran remain inactive through the All-Star break, as a result of a bone bruise.

whew . . . now get Rios!
I’m don’t think I endorse trading for Wells or Rios. Both are owed a lot of money, have not been productive in recent years and have questions about how they would deal in New York.
The only way I take on one of them is if the Blue Jays pick up a portion of the salary (i.e., 1/3) and the return package was smaller (i.e., a Murphy and Niese package).
If it cost either of those two it’s too much. If they want the Mets to eat Rios’s salary they get a couple of DOuble A Prospects at the very most. And hitting in the .290’s with doubles production in the 40’s and some HR power the last 2 seasons is certainly not unproductive! Yes, he’s no superstar but if you can get a player like him with his speed in Citi for next to nothing I don’t have a problem with that! Wells is another story I wouldn’t even bother.
Agreed Mets5…. Murphy or neise is way too much. If they want guys with no ceilings in AA that’s fine.
Wells had superstar potential in 2006 when he hit 303/542/899 with 32 HR with 106 RBI. That’s why he got the big contract, and he’s been hurt ever since. Not someone the mets need unless the Jays are willing to eat a ton of the contract.
Rios as a salary dump is a very nice player. He’s a Carl Crawford type who after one good year the Jays locked up quickly long term to avoid arbitration thinking he would continue to progress and he kind of leveled off, like crawford did in. I haven’t obviously seen him every day but looking at his stats he’s be a nice player to have. He’s right around 200 hits the last 2 years, with a 340 OBP. He has decent pop and speed (24 HR in 2007 and 32 SB in 2008) Looking at his 3 year average he’s got a tad more pop and a tad less speed then Crawford.
I saw those stats as well, that why I advocated getting him if you can for a couple of Double A guys not named Thole, or Menja.
Exactly
no, now get a legit bat, dunn or holliday…go big or go home…those two are difference makers….rios is an overpaid, overrated average OFer
The A’s aren’t even really entertaining offers for Holliday. and Dunn is still too expensive at this point for a player (who I like don’t get me wrong) but with all the holes we have to fill he would simply be a drop in the bucket.
Here is a stat line for you.
.277/8/40
.263/9/37
One will cost you Brad Holt and may walk at the end of the season
The other will cost you Jonathan Neise and will be around for 5 more years
Who would you rather have?
Yes sir, excellent points! I’ll take the 5 year plan please!
bingo
The season might be far over if they keep up their current pace.
Agreed get Rios. He is still young and can be productive for years not months. Buy low on him now while we have the chance. Don’t make the same mistake we made by not signing Dunn this offseason.
While this is “good” for this season, I don’t know if it’s good long-term. This sounds like his knees are becoming bone on bone and that he might have microfracture in the offseason. Microfracture has real spotty results
Comparing Rios to Wells is apples and oranges. Wells is only two years older and owed a lot more money.
Rios in RF, Dunn at 1B. Lets rock!
In reality how much difference is Rios than Church? Last year he put up numbers that would be Churchesque if he ever played a season. Maybe a little lower average, and more power. But in reality that is not worth 60 million over 5 years
In 5 seasons Alex Rios averaged 140 games
In 4 seasons, Church has had only one 140 game season. Maybe Church’s numbers would be similar. but no, they’re not
Church’s best season was .272/15/70
Rios .297/24/85. Really, stop propping up a guy who is average at best
That depends………..ARe you talking the CHurch that played for the Mets in Apr/MAY in ‘08 or the guy that’s shown up ever since? ALso keep in mind that Rios has proven he can be an everyday player and thus far (no matter how much I like him) CHurch simply has not.
Propping up a guy who is average at best? Isn’t average at best the definition of those numbers from Rios? Especially when you come to citifield and knock 5-10 HR’s off that career total. Then figure in that Church will be a fraction of the cost. Save the money, get another pitcher, and truly big bat.
And as for games played. Last year you have a legit criticism, but more than a few of those missed games were the training staffs fault. As for his time in Washington, he was a platoon player so that is not authoritative on his ability to complete a season.
I would coax Moises Alou out of retirement.
Have Moises and Sheff each play every other day, and on the day off be available for PHing.
What is Moises doing and is he in fighting shape?
Yep, he is ! Although his fighting shape includes having his bags packed for the DL trip after five games…………NO thanks…been there , done that!
