Mets assistant GM John Ricco told reporters yesterday that the Mets did have interest in Mark DeRosa, who was eventually traded to the Cardinals, but the price was too steep.
However, Ricco said the Mets did not try to acquire Eric Hinske, who was traded to the Yankees, or Nyjer Morgan, who was traded
to the Pirates.
Ricco was later asked if not knowing when certain players will return from injury is impacting how the team approaches the trade deadline, to which he said:
“Well, clarity would certainly help. But, we’re being aggressive, working the phones and looking to improve this club as it is… We have plenty of holes to fill. I know Omar is making a lot of calls, I’m making calls, and, from that stand point, I don’t think we could be any more aggressive… We’re always going to do what’s in the best interest of the club, short-term and long-term.”
There are fans who are demanding the Mets make a deal. But, I just don’t know what deal they’re demanding.
From what I can tell, the magic-bullet deal isn’t there.
Sure, I believe the Mets could get Adam Dunn, but the Red Sox and other teams are interested as well. And so, given how desperate the Mets are, given the other interested teams, and given how the Nationals do not need to move him, believe me, Dunn is going to cost a too much talent in return.
It’s funny, I hear from people all day who complain on one hand that the farm system is too weak, they say the Mets have nothing to deal and no players in house to rely on when people go on the disabled list. Then, in the very next breath, they demand trading the few prospects the team has for a player like Dunn.

Met fans making uninformed, ridiculous and inconsistent points about improving the state of the ballclub? you don’t say…
heh
+10
At this point, I do not think the Mets should do anything. Doing so would be detrimental to future seasons. But for a miracle (and as a Mets fan, I do know that miracles are possible), this season is dead. Cavalry’s return is too far in the future so save the day.
What do I want from the Mets? Make the home games more enjoyable. Bring in some clowns, some elephants, a fireeater, a jousting session. Do stuff to entertain the fans. Sure, some say the team has been playing like clowns on defense. I love my team no matter how bad they play, but sometimes watching them is too painful.
I will continue to go to games. But the Mets should give back a little. Perhaps a lottery when the train-wreck will occur on the field that costs the Mets a game. Maybe a deal with Subway that fans get a free subway sandwith if the Mets do not commit an error in the game or a double meat sandwich if the Mets score more than 3 runs off the starter.
Lets mix it up, make it more fun for the fans.
To be honest, with the new stadium and all, I am surprised the Mets are permitting such a toilet swirl to happen.
I would think the Mets need to do something to warrant the increased ticket prices.
If they can’t fix the team, they need to make experience more enjoyable.
Maybe a free hotdog for everyone. Do something that shows the Mets care about their paying fan base.
Seriously, even though Citifield seats 10,000 less people, the ticket prices are significantly higher. The Mets are making more money. They are making money in a downturn economy where most people are hurting. Fans purchased tickets at higher prices for a distraction. However when the product is poor, the distraction is not a pleasant one.
If the Mets did something to give back, I think that would placate their fans a little bit.
That is because none of those prospects are likely to turn into the player Dunn is right now. It only costs money to turn them into him and this team needs him more now than they need cheap role players later.
There is no way this team can be imporved drastically by one or even two players….I don’t care who they are
With Beltran, Delgado, Reyes, Maine, Perez, and Putz on the DL to improve this team is going to take a while, either by healing or making a series of sensable deals or a combination of both….and none of those options give the team a short term solution. The Mets are going to have to take some gut shots for the good of the organization and its future….and as fans we’re going to have to endure it too.
Think about it, you can’ trade the guys on the DL, and you can’t sign a free agent, so if you want them to make a deal say good bye to guys like Parnell, Holt, Evans, Murphy, Church, Martinez and the rest of the farm.
The right deal(s) just are not out there
JR, reluctantly, I agree. I think we are done for this year so why trade young talent. I’d only favor a deal that brings us talent who can contribute in a big way in future years. This year is lost.
And let’s face it, even after we get Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Putz, Wagner, Maine and Perez back….what confidence do we have that we stop dropping fly balls, making dumb baserunning misakes and having meltdown innings like we’ve had even when the main guys are healthy? Plus, we still will have the same manager and that’s a problem that ownership needs to step up to.
In the immortal words of Art Howe….just keep battling
And yes the guy running the ship is an issue for me as well, but you can feel the gigantic PASS coming for Jerry when all the dust settles….ownership will do whatever it can to avoid another “Willie” situation. So buckle up for at least another year of “You know he was just telling me he was a man right there”
I wonder about that. Jerry seems to be initiating something of a power struggle with his most recent “no-brainer” comments. If Omar returns – and I think at this point that’s a big If – I wouldn’t at all be surprised to see him can Jerry.
Maybe, but I just see Omar or whoever avoiding the PR hit with the third manager in 3 years, I hope it works out the way you suggested and hey get the right guy in here for the right amount of time meaning a 3 year contract….remember they’re paying Willie this year too
entirely possible. I hope Jerry goes, though.
That is why, for the right price, I could see them acquiring a player like Alex Rios. Not for this season but for what he can provide you as one of your corner outfielders for the next 5 seasons. I’m sure they look at the previous three seasons and see that they haven’t had that type of production from a corner outfielder since Cliff Floyd.
Not sure if someone else has mentioned this, but I think Nyjer Morgan was traded to the Nationals (from the Pirates).
I think we need to trade Beltran, which kills me to say, because he’s one of the best cf’s to play the game, IMHO. His knee issue is going to preclude him from playing many more years in the field, but his bat will continue to be above par.
The injury really got me down, because I was hoping he’d be the next Met HOFer (after Piazza, of course). But with no cartilage in his knee, there’s probably no way he declines softly enough to get there.
How many teams are going to pay full price for a busted CF?
No idea. But as busted cfers go, he’s still better than most (and still has a potent bat to DH with). I’d think he has plenty of value to an AL club, though I’d bet the Mets have to eat some $$.
There are plenty of atrocius GMs out there, though.
But I think the Nats quietly feel they DO need to move Dunn and his $20MM contract. Strasburg is going to cost an arm and a leg, and they also just extended Zimm’s contract back in April…don’t forget the Nats aren’t exactly reeling in the dough, and are only averaging 23,000 fans a game (mostly due to opposing teams visiting DC).
Here’s the thing…with Dunn and Rios, you aren’t sacrificing the future because these are two guys who are both still somewhat young and in their prime, and NONE of the current Mets’ prospects are going to produce like Dunn will. I still believe Dunn can be had for some combination of Murphy/Church/Kunz/Niese/Gee.
Call me stupid, but any three of the aforementioned players could probably do it, and we all know how the Nats are looking for cheap OF and RP.
I thought Rios could be had cheaply. What’s the problem? He’s not a magic bullet, but I think he’s a GREAT piece for a team like the Mets.
Don’t worry, Matt will be saying we need to make a move again after the Mets play today…
I don’t get how the price was too high for DeRosa? From everything I read the price was Parnell, lets see a quality utility guy who may fill some much needed holes for a struggling reliever who can’t get anyone out. Sounds fair to me.
Derosa is 34 years old, Parnell is 24. Why trade a young fire baller for an old utility player. Don’t forget Parnell is a starter who was forced to the pen last year and pitched well in spring training. If he struggles in relief, he’ll be given a chance to be a starter and young pitching is more valuable than old utility players.
What I am getting at is I think our front office puts to high of a trade value on some guys. almost like if they believe everyone else around the league will believe. I am not saying DeRosa was the right fit but I am not putting a very high value on Parnell right now. Really he is nothing special until he develops another GOOD pitch.
Parnell is still very young an inexperienced, and my take why he is struggling is simply because he is fatigued.
Bobby Parnell has 36 appearances this season, which is TIED with Pedro Feliciano.
Brian Stokes and Sean Green have 28 and 31 appearances, respectively.
Jerry Manuel has overworked Parnell, and the loss of Putz has hurt as well. Meanwhile, Darren O’Day (the guy I scorned Omar for releasing) has a 1.46 ERA in 26 G for Texas this season.
It’s simple: O’Day should never have been released after just four short appearances, and Bobby Parnell should not be pitching day like he is.
Sorry, Stokes has 26 appearances, not 28
I agree, I was upset that they offered O’day back and didn’t find a spot for him in the bullpen. The same thing happened last year when they chose to keep Wise over Register. Granted I have no clue how Register has pitched this year but I liked what I saw out of him last spring and he couldn’t have been worse than what we were throwing out there last year.
First of all, Parnell barely qualifies as a prospect. The guy is going to be 25 in two months, was a 9th-round pick and has all of two months of impressive pitching on his resume.
And the problem with the Mets minor leagues is that not only do they lack potential quality major leaguers, they lack potential major leaguers period. There’s a reason Binghamton and Buffalo are each 20 games under .500. Argenis Reyes is the cream of the major-league-ready minor league crop. That’s all you need to know.
That is the problem, the only two groups that put any value on our prospects or trade chips are Mets fans and the Mets front office. Everyone else considers them a joke.
most of our better quality prospects are in single A ball because the mets just started to draft over slot last year. They need time to develop.
that’s so depressing.
I would trade Jon Niese for Adam Dunn. I would, and I think that could get the deal done.
You would need to throw in either an OF or a reliever…those are the Nats’ needs right now.
I’d say Church + one or two of Niese/Kunz/Gee
It’s a month before the TD.
Some fans say we don’t have the chips to trade and blame Omar.
Whatever.
Some fans suggest they can evaluate players/prospects better than the pros and want to trade the FMarts, Parnell’s, etc, etc,
and blame Omar for not doing so.
Whatever.
Some fans say pick up DeRosa, or Dunn, fill in your choice, etc, as if one or another ensures we stay in the race while Omar allows himself to be robbed.
Whatever.
Some fans say it’s Omar’s fault for not having the organizational depth to replace all the wounded.
Whatever.
Some fans say the Met’s and Omar owe them something…and have to make a deal.
Whatever.
Few, if any clubs could withstand the rash of injuries, both this year and last, to starters, relievers, position players, backups and backups to backups, and remain in the hunt?Omar is keeping his cool. There will be salary dumps this month and we will get guys back. We may be able to make a run in a weak division.
This season may end up being Omar’s finest hour. He kept his head while all about him were losing theirs.
I agree, I think every Mets fan hated having to deal with yankee fans making fun of them over the embarrasing sweep and thats what put Mets fan’s over the edge to make a trade. We’re still only 3 games back with a lot of games left. If we were 7-8 games back than I’d panic but if we can get to the all-star break being less than 10 games back, a healthy team can make up those games. We still have a lot of games against the phillies to make up ground. If the phillies don’t get another SP, they won’t be able to run and hide with the Division!!
