Prior to yesterday’s game, Jerry Manuel had offered David Wright the day off against the Brewers.
Wright declined that offer, to which he told reporters:
“He knows that I’d rather play than not play. He kind of knows how I felt. We talked a little bit [Tuesday]. He knew I wanted to play.”
Prior to yesterday’s 0 for 4 at the plate, Wright had hit .351 (13 for 37) with three doubles, one home run and three RBI in his ten prior games.

Wright needs the rest no question, but the fact that it meant that much to him to be in there to try to snap the losing streak shows a lot of heart and determination.
He had a rough day at the plate, with the 3 strikeouts but Gallardo was brutal, a career best 12 strikeouts so you really can’t put that much blame on Wright for being hitless yesterday.
I would love to see him get rested today but i doubt it will happen against a left hander, and he is a notorious lefty masher.
he can’t rest on the same day as Gary Sheffield.
I think it should be today. You can’t rest him against the Phillies
Except Maholm is a lefty.
Humph. Nice to see a New York third baseman not let ‘fatigue’ keep him out of the lineup. Win in Pittsburgh and take 2 of 3 in Philthydelphia and lo and behold, first place could be ours.
It would help if we had a cleanup hitter
Sadly, the other day Church had a four hit game and not one RBI to show for it. The guys have got to get on in front of him. I don’t care if you had Piazza in the cleanup spot in his prime he still only capable of producing one run per at bat by himself! These guys have got to stop worrying about who they don’t have in the lineup and start playing a team game with the folks they do have in the lineup! That alone is the only hope for this team if they want to hang around untill they get healthy!
P.S. The PHILs getting clobbered 11 – 1 with Cole Hammels on the mound doesn’t hurt either! lol
I used to have a man crush on D.Wright (I can admit it) but this year man, I dunno. I think he’s a good player and I sometimes think that too much is expected of him but then I take a look at Jeter and what he was doing when he was Wright’s age.
The counter to that is Jeter had many more Vets on his team Bernie, O’Neil, etc to help him along but none the less, he grabbed the reins and took that team over. I desperately want Wright to do that and I don’t know if he ever will.
I realize he puts a lot of pressure on himself, you can see it when he’s at the plate but that’s just it…he has to change that attitude and realize he can only control so much. He needs to relax a bit and enjoy the spot he’s in.
I dunno. I think he could be one of the greatest Mets of all time but I’m not seeing it right now. The strikeouts, the errand throws to first. I don’t care if he doesn’t hit HR’s, really I don’t but I’m waiting for him to take it to the next level…
The man has started every game for the Mets this season, leads the league it hitting, and is a presence in the clubhouse all the while being in a lineup riddled with backup players! How much more can he do?
Be perfect I guess… can’t please everyone.
No errors and no strikeouts and people would still find a reason to find fault with him.
…oh, and bat .975 in the clutch too
Bit of a cop out by Jerry to ‘offer him the day off’ as he knows Wright will decline. Make him take an off day or just put him in the lineup, no need to let us know you ‘offered’ later.
hindsight says he should have taken yesterday off… but they clearly need to give him a blow. Wright played every inning of the blow outs the past two weeks, maybe that would have been a good time to get him half a game off. Oops.
