Has anyone heard of what the Mets plans are for the international signing period this year? I hear the Yankees are expected to spend $4 million. I also see that the tall cuban lefty Aroldis Chapman defected and could be signed by a major league team according to MLBtraderumors.

    • wnymetsfan says:

They are usually pretty active and are willing to spend money to get the top guys. However, they also tend to be pretty mum on things until the player signs and even then do not always tell people until after they are done getting guys.

      • stilltheEWM says:

Baseball America said def Urbina, and MAYBE one other big name.. so I would not say very active.. the other player was a SS named Jairo Kelly from the DR

        • wnymetsfan says:

I did say usually. I would also say that they only sign 2 of the big name guys that everyone knows but I would be shocked if only 2 international players are signed based on the Mets track record under Omar

    • Felix the Cat says:

The Yanks are going to drop almost 3 million alone on the catcher Sanchez from the DR.

      • wnymetsfan says:

Didn’t they just drop a big amount of money on an international catcher a year or two ago.I cannot remember his name but most thought he would ultimately be a DH/1b.

  2. Mets17 says:

I look at this being a huge signing period for them, they said they wanted to build their system with international FAs plus everyone has been down on our system lately, even though I feel it is very underrated

    • thedude says:

What are you basing this “underrated” claim on?

The 26-49 record of Buffalo? Or the 29-48 record of Binghamton?

Or have you bought into the hype of all these can’t-miss A ball prospects the team always touts but rarely pan out?

      • dykstraw says:

26-49 for buffalo is pretty amazing considering how they started like 2-17 or something

      • Mets17 says:

Well guys like Holt, Mejia, Davis, Thole, Neise and Martinez are all prospects above the A level. Plus we have guys like Flores and Marte who have been hyped. But our system really isnt that bad. We dont have 5 studs but most teams dont, but id say we have 5 at the very least solid players in the future

        • thedude says:

I’ll just go by the track record. Five years into Minaya’s reign and the only serviceable player the Mets have developed is Pelfrey. And he’s been ridiculously inconsistent for a college pitcher taken in the top 10.

Compare that to the Red Sox in 2007, five years into Theo’s regime.

          • stilltheEWM says:

I am not an Omar fan.. but the mets system isn’t really that bad.. yes I wish they spent more in the draft.. but they have produced talent and used talent for trade…

It’s middle of the pack, maybe a tick above..

I admit they could invest in the draft more, but you can’t say its barren because its not.

            • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i agree the mets system gets alot of grief and its not all deserved. is it on par with boston? or anaheim? no of course not, but our farm system has given us the chance to trade for some big name guys like santana, carlos delgado, and jj putz even though he got hurt..

              • Mets17 says:

Its better than the Yankees system and I hear our system getting bashed far more than the Yankees

          • That’s not fair. Omar has signed a bunch of Latino players when they were teenagers, so they will obviously take longer to develop.

  3. thedude says:

According to Baseball America, the Mets are the leaders for SS Jairo Kelly, although given his scouting report, who cares?

    From Baseball America:
His power is below-average. His arm as average to above-average, though his accuracy needs work. He’s not a great runner and some scouts think he will get heavy in his lower half, but he has the range to make the average plays

    • stilltheEWM says:

He’s 16! It’s more or less like an extra 3/4/5th round draft pick…

      • thedude says:

So the Mets won’t go about slot in the first round, but they’ll spend over a million for some 16-year-old kid?

        • stilltheEWM says:

That’s exactly right..the only explanation is that MLB doesn’t “frown” upon the intl signing rules.. and the mets for whatever reason like to be good citizens when it comes to their draft…

Although this year they did go over slot with Matz.. they did not do so later..

I don’t quite understand it either… maybe they think the upside is bigger/better here then it is in the draft.

        • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

i dont quite understand the philosophy especially when it seems college players are very polished nowadays youd think they would try to over pay for someone who has actually hit puberty instead of a complete raw talent.

  4. TheBeltranTollsForThee says:

Yet again Omar refuses to learn from his mistakes…

Depth, men 26-40 on the 40 man roster, that’s what wins championships. But nope, Omar “stars in his eyes” Minaya can’t see past the top tier. The idea that there is no one available to trade for is proof of his incompetence. Look at the current 40 man roster and tell me if at least half of them (right now with all the injuries) are at least league average players. This is the easiest thing to accomplish and he can’t seem to even field 30 league average or better players let alone 40. Omar should be signing not just the top tier guys but the guys who project to be league average (though yes this is hard to quantify, but in terms of veterans it is the simplest thing).

If the Mets had two more league average hitters his team would have 5 more wins easily (no I can’t quantify that, sorry). My point, I believe, has been made anyway.

    • Felix the Cat says:

I understand what you’re saying but your point is greatly exaggerated. Players 26-40 on the 40 man roster are not what wins championships in baseball. This isn’t the NFL.

      • TheBeltranTollsForThee says:

I firmly believe having at least a league average player step in when a starting player goes down to injury for any period of time keeps your team production at a consistent level. A guy like Erik Hinske is that kind of guy and he should be a Met right now. Also he’s won a championship so he’s “a winner,” whatever that means.

We don’t need an Adam Dunn or a Cliff Lee, we need an Aubrey Huff or a Mark DeRosa to go with a Jeff Suppan.

  5. Ugueth Urbina’s son? I sure hope the apple falls VERY FAR from that tree!

  6. MrMustSeeTv says:

I asked ESPN’s Jorge Arangure about Juan Urbina via Twitter and where he would have placed in the draft had he been eligible. Arangure stated that Urbina would have been a 2nd or 3rd round talent.

I like the fact that the Mets got Urbina and Steven Matz via the draft. It adds two quality left-handed arms to the Mets farm system, which they sorely need.
