Because David Wright is striking out at least once per game, and so far nothing has been done about it. Yes, he is hitting over .330, but the fact that he:

a) hasn’t been taking the ball the other way
b) hasn’t been hitting fastballs (usually his best pitch to hit)
c) has a big looping swing
d) pulls off everything he swings at

tells me there is a problem with Howard Johnson. Rick Down was a much better hitting coach, IMO. Wright’s best season was 2007, during which he hit .325 with 30 HR, 42 2B, 107 RBI, and 34 SB

Also, look at his hitting charts…in past years he has had a great spray, hitting the ball to all fields consistently. This season he has pulled more balls than ever, and guys aren’t necessarily pitching him inside.

Unless HoJo is too concerned with trying to teach these AAA ballplayers how to hit at this level, he needs to be more aware of Wright’s situation and actually correct his swing. I’ll take the David Wright that hits .310-.315 with at least 20 HR any day over the Wright that hits .340 with 10 HR and 180 K’s…

DWright’s 1st inning at bat was a microcosm of his season. Facing a pitcher who hasn’t thrown a big league game in 2 years, he swings at the first pitch and pops up. You can accept the lack of homers in exchange for the increase in average, but not along with the strikeouts, which seem to happen more often when there are men on base. His approach makes me think he is up there guessing too much and winds up looking silly as he swings at too many pitches out of the strike zone. True, HoJo should be working with him on this, but DWright has to relax himself at the plate.

Well i believe any bat omar wants can be had if he trades fmart….do you trade fmart for holliday? Advantages are that holliday is proven…will hit well in this lineup..and while hes a rental if he is traded for fmart theres no chance omar lets him walk….because if omar is gunna make a trade…it has to be something to jump start this team…not ryan spilborghs…Im not sure if i would trade fmart…but the other way to looking at it is…there is always plenty of OFers available and NY is a win-now market and fmart isnt gunna help them win now…or maybe even next year because he looks like he needs alot of work

i dont really care who the hitting coach is to be honest, but how can u say howard johnson is a terrible hitting coach when the team is either leading the league or top 3 in OBP and AVG…those are two big offensive categories

I agree Wright needs a day off, but I also believe his high K rate can be attributed to Ho Jo. That guy is a horrible hitting coach…Wright has been taking the same ugly swing all season long, and I’m willing to bet it was Ho Jo who made him do it in the first place.

And yes, this team needs another bat. Even with Reyes, Delgado, and Beltran all healthy, we still all agreed we needed another stick in the lineup, yet because we wanted to save money for the trade deadline (which was actually smart, because look at us now), we didn’t get it in the offseason.

Well, Omar, you saved your payroll for a situation like this…don’t re-neg like Jerry does all the time…do something.

Many of the losses can be blamed on not having a bat, but even with all the weapons in the line up, when your starting pitcher has a game like Livan did today, the odds are against that you’re going to win.

Of course, the fact that there is no bat in the line up is in the pitchers head and that obviously is trying. Ericloz, you’re right. No matter what, they can’t try to do too much.

It’s getting to the point where people who are excellent role players/5th starters who did so well earlier are starting to come down in the face of having to be an every day guy/big game pitcher. It was bound to happen.

I hear the crickets chirping.

1, D.W. needs a day off to clear his head.
2. Livian didn’t seem his usual self, injury or old age?
3. The BP was outstanding, again.
4. We need a bat soon, if we intend to compete this year. Just one to settle the lineup, and give J.M some consistancy.
5. The starting pitching will settle down once they realize that they don’t need to pitch a 3 hiter to have a chance, right now there is too much pressure to pitch a perfect game every time out. They need to know that 3 or 4 runs isn’t a bad thing.
6. J.M. needs to settle on a 2 line-up rotation and stop juggling the hitters.
7. Get rid of Redding, he just isn’t cutting it as a starter. Give Nelson a chance or bring up someone else.
8. Fix Parnell, send him down if you have to, but fix him.
9. Send Martinez down, you are killing his confidence.
10. Keep riding the bus, have team dinners, sing Kum-Ba-Ja, if you have to but keep the team dynamic going. We need to re-inforce the team concept.
