Redding should not be moved to the bullpen, he should be dumped. If he gets moved to the bullpen that means that the team will probably demote either Misch or Dessens who have done a much better job of getting outs than Redding has all season.
100% agree
I gotta believe it will be Dessens, Unless the Mets want to send Parnell down for awhile to work on his secondary pitches.
That would probably be the best move to make right now. Dessens has been surprisingly effective and has worked in a big league pen before.
That could also be a possibility, but still they have to find a way to get Redding off the team, he flat out stinks. Omar should just face it and admit he made a mistake giving this guy a $2 million major league contract and cut him.
I agree he should have gave him around $1MM, but you can’t blame Omar for the pickup. The guy pitched exceptionally well as the only decent pitcher on an awful team. The man won 10 games for the Nationals, which is amazing given how bad that team is.
It was worth a shot…
He did have 10 wins but if you look at his other stats he must have been real lucky. He had an ERA of 5 and he allowed 267 baserunners in 182 innings pitched. As a GM your job is to look at more than the win column if he had looked at these other stats he would have seen that he should have offered at best a minor league contract with the incentive that he needed to compete to make the team.
And as a side note, when are the Wilpons going to realize that Omar makes these mistakes way to often: Redding $2 million, Perez $36 millon, Castillo $26 million. That’s way too much money being spent on mediorce players. He needs to go.
Redding has a long track record of being below replacement level, and his one ‘good’ year wasn’t even that good. He is repeatedly invited to camp on minor league deals… but he gets guaranteed money from Omar…
At least with that salary there is no way they keep him next year. Have to non-tender him, can’t offer him a raise on this years number.
Valid point, but guys in losing situations don’t always perform the way they should. For example, Omar got Ayala last season for a bag of balls and a $20 bill, and he did pretty well for us in an unfamiliar closer role…
Ayala was sharp for us in all but three or four games…I’m sure Omar was hoping to catch the same type of “lightning” from Redding, who obviously has better stuff than Ayala did.
Plus, Redding’s numbers against the NL East were great, which I’m sure is another reason Omar took a chance…
Omar messed up badly with Castillo and Perez, but I still think the Redding signing was worth a shot…who knows, he may be a great reliever for us?
Totally agree…he stinks and should be DFA’s. I am not one of these “fire omar” nutcases, but I will say this was not one of Omar’s smarter signings.
How about a link to where this information is coming from? Not even a source noted?
I would’ve waited until after the game to announce it, that way Nieve doesn’t pitch too comfortably (in a bad way, that is).
I don’t think guys are really that aware of things outside of themselves and the other teams starting lineup.
But yea, any added spark would be useful.
At least with this decision being made now, Redding would be available as a long reliever today if Nieve is made ‘too uncomfortable’ by the Phils.
This is true, After his outing, he should have been available yesterday, if needed.
The best way to comfort NIeve is an early lead — The Mets have been falling behind (or not scoring at all) for most games of late.
