Prior to last night’s game,
Omar Minaya told reporters that making a major trade is unlikely, a big factor being that there are too many teams still in contention for a playoff spot and there are few teams willing to deal their players, adding:
“Some of our DL guys are probably going to be the reinforcements. But it’s also fair to say that we’re going to try to go out there and look around and see if we can do something that can fit. If we can get all our guys back healthy, our healthy guys, it’s going to be hard to make trades that are going to be better than Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado.”
…i definitely agree that on paper, it is tough to top the production of these three players, but considering that Reyes’ biggest asset are his legs and there is a significant injury there, i wonder if the Mets are putting too much faith in what he will bring upon his return…the same can be said about Delgado; assuming he does return, can he be expected to perform at a high level…
…on the other hand, while the need is there right now for more offense and it is clear that this current group cannot depend on a consistent attack, even if they could bring in a big bat i still think that trading their top prospects for one will not take them to the playoffs, even though it might help the team score more runs…i believe that if any deal is to be made it should be for a starting pitcher because in the end, a team’s fate is always determined by their ability to hold down the opposing offense…

I agree for the most part but Adam Dunn is a significant upgrade to the offense. He could be added to the roster for a couple prospects. The Nationals arent in it by any means and as the deadline approaches the asking price will go down.
Good luck getting anybody on here to believe that…for some reason, people think Dunn will cost F-Mart, Niese, Holt, etc., which just can’t be true.
Nats have no money (especially after signing Zimm to a big contract), Nats need money to sign Strasburg (a Boras client), Dunn is making a good amount of money and has not been the “savior” by any means, Nats love young, cheap talent.
I’m not convinced Omar can’t work anything out with them. Either he just doesn’t like Dunn for some reason, or the Wilpons secretly aren’t letting him deal.
I bet you could catch their attention by floating names like Murphy, Church (who is hot right now), Kunz, Niese, or Gee.
It would be foolish to trade any regulars the mets have…if u get dunn u can slot him in LF and have sheff go back to the bench and let evans/murph play 1B…or u can play him at 1B and let sheff and whoever platoon LF….if u trade church and murphy…or any combo like that…ur just creating more holes…sheff cant be depended on to play every day..especially RF…..If omar can acquire dunn or holliday and slot them in LF…u can get by with murph/evans at 1B until delgado gets back….or even if he doesnt u can get by with wright, beltran, reyes, holliday/dunn, and even church who is showing when he plays everyday hes pretty good. With that being said….holliday is a better all around player..and will prob cost fmart and i wouldnt necessarily be against that…dunn is a bad defender(which isnt that big of a deal if hes hitting 40 bombs) and doesnt fit the “fast, athletic” mold omar has been talking about.having
Even though Dunn doesnt fit that mold of fast and athletic he is going to play 1B for the most part for them. And is under contract for the rest of this year and next year so its not like he has us tied down, he is a professional hitter that the middle of this lineup needs asap
First of all, Holliday would be a rental. He’d be stupid to sign after playing with a team for a couple of months, especially when he thinks he can get a huge contract from a team like Boston or the Yankees in the offseason.
Secondly, you wouldn’t be creating more holes because Dunn can play 1B and OF. Say you trade Church and Murphy, then Dunn plays 1B until Delgado comes back, at which point he will play LF. Until Gado gets back, Evans, F-Mart, Reed, Sheff, and Tatis can hold down the OF.
Thirdly, Holliday is a horrible defender as well. Holliday is a .980 fielder in the OF, while Dunn is a .983 fielder at 1B (where he would play after this season). Defense is not a valid argument.
Dunn is signed through 2010, is cheaper, and won’t cost F-Mart, Flores, Holt, or Mejia to get. The choice between the two is a no-brainer.
Either way, can we PLEASE sign Orlando Hudson this offseason? The man has been nothing but consistent and is an upgrade over anybody we have at 2B both offensively and defensively.
Plus, he already said he wants to play for the Mets…
He isn’t only an upgrade over 2b defensively but he would be an upgrade offensively over ANYBODY we currentlly have on the roster which is why we would be in a better position right now if Omar the moron picked him up last year and benched or cut Castillo…
Oh yea Freddie Coupon wouldn’t like that.
I also said pick him up, but everyone on here just ripped me a new one because he is “the next Roberto Alomar.” What a stupid argument that was…
Hudson has had two freak injuries (broken bones), which are not nagging and reoccurring injuries. He is also a GG caliber fielder, and can hit for average with some pop.
Not to mention he is a hard-nosed leader, and it never hurts to add a guy like that to your clubhouse. He’s making LA look really smart for signing him.
A Safe and Happy 4th of July to all of you Mets Blog readers and staff!
No Teahens and Spilborgs, I hope. They are bodies and nothing else and therfore not worth giving up anything more than bags of balls. The only guy I’d be OK with us moving good prospects for is Dunn because he is at least under contract thru next year. Other than that, I vote we just grin and bear it.
I suppose Omar is going to have to learn to build a farm system before he can make deals. Maybe he should start there instead of dealing what the Mets already have. Not wanting to sound like I’m giving up on the ‘09 season but let’s be real here.
Hey Omar ever think you just SUCK at what you do????? Cause Met fans are starting to believe that is the problem!
I think the problem is the Wilpons. No matter how many times they say it, the Madoff scandal hurt this team badly.
Omar can only do what he is allowed to do…
