wow, I'm impressed, you live next to a Naval Base. Good for you.

I stand by what I said. Every one can use a little reminder every now and then.

let them make a profit if one additional person realizes that freeedom isn't free.

You say it's over the top? I say more is needed. One weekend a year isn't enough of a reminder.

Thank you, Dave. I thought I was the only one who saw that scheme for what it is...And you're right, the FDNY and NYPD hats was truly special, and Piazza's HR was one I will never forget.

And I doubt any proceeds collected by MLB through the sale of these ugly hats will go to our troops...if they want to do a charity, why not donate based on how many home runs are hit, strikeouts recorded, etc...

My only suggestion is that you leave the word "bombs" out of the HR charity, lol...

I agree with dwright5 - there's nothing 'patriotic' about wearing a hat that doesn't match.

What the Mets did after 9/11 - wearing NYPD and FDNY hats - was a true tribute. It was spontaneous and heartfelt.

The red hat business, on the other hand, is just pure merchandising. Watch how fast MLB.com will be offering these red hats up for sale. Hopefully they will at least donate some of the profits to the veterans organizations they support...although there are much better ways teams, players, and fans can find to donate to these causes than selling ugly hats.

See, that's what I'm talking about. Just because someone doesn't wear rw&b means they don't support our troops? It's a little over the top, if you ask me...

It's kind of like people who go to church because they feel guilty about something...if you've got to wear rw&b to feel patriotic, something is wrong.

Trust me, I live next to the largest naval base in the world, and there is no shortage of support for our troops...

The fact that it has incorporated itself into baseball as simply a ploy to make a profit is what disgusts me...MLB makes these stupid hats, forces each team to wear them (regardless of where the team is playing), and then sells them online to make money.

It was like when VT used the Massacre as a way to sell more sports tickets, shirts, and other memorabilia...it's pathetic.

You want to be patriotic and show support for our brave men and women overseas? What you have to do is stand and face the flag at attention during the anthem, wear a patch with the American flag (which is much more patriotic than some clown hat), and enjoy the 4th of July like Americans should...watching a good game of baseball!

It's an organized display of support for the troops who are putting their lives on the line every day. There is nothing wrong w/ that, we need more if you ask me.

I just don't like the solid red caps. Should have been red, white and blue.

It just looks like they had a surplus of Philly hats in storage and changed the logo.

I just hope someone other than Scott gets their hands on him first.

off topic, but Aroldis Chapman did defect yesterday.

I wonder if MLB, or Scott Boras chartered the flight out of Amsterdam?

How the heck is a red hat patriotic? What ever happened to the simple American flag stitched in their hats and jerseys?

I swear some people take this supposed "patriotism" too far sometimes...as if you're not patriotic if you don't wear every single red, white, and blue item you've got.
