Update, 11:50 am:
David Lennon, in a post to Twitter, says that Fernando Martinez’s injured right knee is improving, but he will be checked out by doctors in New York tomorrow.
Original Post:
The Mets (39-41) close out their three game series with the Phillies (41-37) this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
Alex Cora will lead off, followed by Daniel Murphy, David Wright, Ryan Church at cleanup and playing right field, Nick Evans in left field, Jeremy Reed in center field, Brian Schneider, and Luis Castillo.
Johan Santana (9-6, 3.34 ERA) will start today for the Mets. After two fantastic starts against the Rays and Cardinals, Santana struggled last Tuesday against the Brewers, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in six innings. Since June 2nd, Santana is just 2-3 with a 6.19 ERA.
Joe Blanton (4-4, 5.08 ERA) will start today for the Phillies. Blanton is looking for his first victory since June 1st, and he is 1-1 with four no-decisions since, but has a respectable 3.65 ERA over that span. He has fallen victim to the home run ball, allowing nine of them in his last 37 1/3 innings.

Wow, if we can’t take this one…. Nice that during the last two games I’ve been too busy to watch a single at bat. I’d like however to be able to wake up tomorrow and read the sports page, which I haven’t been able to do yet this weekend. Come on guys, win one!!
this game is important because if they lose again…panic button is definitely being pressed…just because of the lack of offense and terrible SPing lately
With that being said, its way to early to panic(wow where have we heard that before) but truth is, its still the first week of july, so even if they were to lose today…the seasons not over…
I’m not happy that any Mets are going to the All-Star game but make sure everyone goes to MLB.com and votes for anyone but Shane Victorino as many times as you can. I just voted for Sandoval 15 times. I hate that punk don’t want to see him make it.
wow great lineup Jerry is forced to throw out there cause Omar is useless. I smell a sweep
What he couldn’t get Pat Misch and Pedro Feliciano in there too? hey maybe the bat boy is left handed too…
ok… say our guys get healthy and all come back. what’s preventing ibanez from getting healthy and philly making a move to set a starting P? you know what place that puts us in? the exact same one we’re in now. they’d still be better than us.
Fire Omar
Fire HoJo
Fire Manuel
and especially fire this horrendous training staff!
And while you’re at it… may as well fire the minor league managers too because Murphy and Evans dont know WTF they’re doing in the field either. Shouldnt fielding be taught at SOME level??
Ibanez will be back before any of our guys are back and the Phillies most likely WILL acquire a pitcher before the deadline… so your point seems accurate
But who will they acquire? From what I’m hearing, to bring any one of these three–Cliff Lee, Jake Peavy, or Roy Oswalt–it will cost more than what the Phillies are willing to give up (most of the pitching prospects at AAA). Depending on how Erik Bedard pitches in the last few starts beforre the trading deadline, he could be moved, but will the Phillies give up what the Mariners want? I don’t think so.
but they CAN make a deal. we don’t have a lot to deal in the minor league system at the moment. from all accounts, we dont have much in the system save for a few people.
Here we go again, the Mets are playing shorthanded, what else is new? If Martinez cannot play today and he is going to have an MRI tomorrow why not just send him down or place him on the DL and call someone else up? Omar stinks, he wouldn’t be able to run a Little League team.
I look forward to big thigs from Reed today. Did he even swing a bat in June?
Wright and Beltran All Stars…..Yaaaaaaaaaaaaa….
Now what?
at least Wright won’t play all 9 innings of that game…
god forbit he is pulled early in a blow out for rest.
btw, when was the last time the Mets won a Sunday final game?
I’m a little nervous.
4 weeks ago… against the Nats
3-8 with a rainout on Sundays. You should be worried, it doesn’t look like rain…
;)
Wright 5 for his last 38 with 13 Ks over his last 9 + games. Mets 2-7 in those 9 games. Injuries + No Wright = No Chance
He really needs that day off…
Today would have been perfect if not for Martinez.
Should have sent Martinez down and recalled someone else for a few days.
He could use it. I’d wish he’d find an excuse to skip the ASG.
Santana’s trying to be too fine…
he will get rocked if he doesn’t get it together.
So glad I haven’t been able to watch mets games this weekend. I might have to make it a habit for the rest of the season cause this team is just horrendous
You are being too kind.
Can anyone find out what the all-time record for team ground-outs to the right side of the infield is? I think the Mets have already broken it.
I just realized what is happening w/ the roster.
They are going to wait until Tuesday to place Martinez on the dl, so they can activate Perez.
That is an indication of the state of their farm system that they can’t or won’t bring someone up for a couple of days.
Not 5-4-3 please
4-6-3….
My bad
Ok 4-5-3, bummer
Knew it all the way. He’s total crap right now.
i was actually hoping david walked or hit a pop fly there because right now i have alot more confidence in church in clutch situations then i do wright
Take away one game in Milwaukee, where he went 3 for 4, Wright has been 2 for 35 since the start of the Yankee series. That’s an .057 average.
That’s a glaring statistic and I thank you for posting it.
Santana has given up as many home runs as the current line has so far this year.
Wow, Johan was hurt in Milwaukee on an 0-2 pitch.
I can understand wanting to be “to the point” in order to keep the pitch count down, but its better practice to waste a pitch to try and get the batter (when on defense) to swing at a bad pitch.
Okay, Brian, lets see one of those big HRs!
this offense is embarassing
I though you needed to have an offense to be embarrassing.
There is no offense to be ashamed of.
what is jerrys obsession with tatis…the dude has had 1 good game all season yet he keeps thinking hes gunna come through…what is that 11 DPs in 18 chances?
Words can not express what I just saw and feel right now.
As much as I hate to, it is time to get something to eat.
This could not have been scripted better if you were a philly fan
Jerry is out of his mind. What is the deal with tatis? Murphy hits lefties well and just had that big 2-out, 2-RBI pinch hit against Maholm in Pittsburgh.
And really? Tatis? Dude is involved in more DPs than a porn star.
The only thing missing is a total defensive meltdown.
It was a bullet one hopper. Two feet either way and it’s a rbi single. Unlike Wright, he hit it hard but right at someone. I can never kill a guy if he hits it hard but right at someone. Thems the breaks.
id agree on that if this wasnt such a consistent reoccurance…if he just happened to hit in one there its like “well damn” but he does it almost every other time he gets up in a DP situation
Dear God. Only the Mets. Only the Mets would see a constant offensive meltdown time after time and not do something with the coaching. And to those of you who are going to start in on the players spare me. OK. You’ve got different players don’t you and the results are the same. Only the Mets would watch a team self-destruct twice and do nothing to the management. Only the Mets would not fire a GM and Assistant GM who have destroyed a farm system and made some of the worst signings in baseball. And lastly only the Mets would care as little about their fans as they seem to.
i think the organization would start to care about the fans if people stopped showing up to the brand new park…
Your reply is the most intelligent one posited today. But guess what? Most fans are beer-guzzling drunks that can barely understand what you’re saying! Or, it could be a family that isn’t familiar with baseball statistics that only visit the ball park to have a good time. People won’t sacrifice going to the game for the sake of a higher cause. These mentioned folk are also deleterious to our cause. With that said, the stadium will ALWAYS sell a plethora of tickets.
2 extra base hits in three games in that ballpark is beyond ridiculous. Wright has been plain off the charts awful over the past 10 games (5 for 40 and that includes a 3 for 4 game) and the lineup is crowded with way too many .250 or less singles hitters. They’re way beyond one bat helping them at this point even if that bat was Pujols. They need an injection of 3 above average major league hitters. 1-2 and 6-9 are just too incredibly weak night in and night out.
Thats the problem. Our pitcher pitches a great game, but makes two mistakes and Phillies get two HRs.
Their pitcher makes a mistake, and the Mets get a single.
No deterant for mistakes if no one can hit it out.
I can safely speak for all of us when I say that the word “frustration” cannot even begin to assess how we feel right now. Why is no one holding Mr. Minaya accountable for our team’s incompetence? Why don’t we begin chanting “FI-RE O-MAR?” at Citi Field? Why can’t Gary Cohen have the testicular fortitude call the team out live on television? –forget professionalism; it would be therapeutic for us that matter most to this organization, the fans! It seems like our players don’t have psychological strength to withstand criticism and tribulation. Must I remind everyone that we’re currently three games under .500 and four games behind our arch rivals – fourth place in the pitiable NL EAST? We scored three runs in three games! We put on an embarrassing display of baseball in Philadelphia, and have given the players and their fans reason to write off the Mets for the season.
Are any of you embarrassed? Is it even worth expending this much energy on a team that, honestly and possibly, could not care less about their pathetic losing streak?
Great, if the Phillies and their fans write us off, then in Sept, when we are 15 games out and Beltran finally returns (and we find out that neither Delgado nor Reyes will be back) we can play spoiler.
