According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com,
the Mets, Phillies and Giants also had interest in OF Scott Hairston, who was traded from the Padres to the A’s this past weekend in exchange for two minor-league pitchers.
The 28–year-old Hairston hit .299 with 10 HR and 14 doubles in 197 at bats for San Diego this season.
Speaking of the trade market…
According to MLB.com, “The Phillies will watch free-agent RHP Pedro Martinez throw Monday or Tuesday in the Dominican Republic.”
The Indians are looking for young, major-league ready, zero-to-three pitchers, according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
That said, the Indians are asking the Giants for their top pitching prospect, Madison Bumgarner, plus additional talent, in a deal for Victor Martinez, reports the San Jose Mercury News.
Bumgarner entered this season as the third-best pitching prospect in all of baseball, according to MiLB.com.
The A’s have no intention of trading OF Matt Holliday, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com, as he’d rather acquire two compensatory picks for next year’s amateur draft.
Lastly, Buster Olney of ESPN.com believes the Red Sox, Brewers, Dodgers and A’s could match up well with the Braves, if they look to trade either RHP Javier Vazquez or SS Yunel Escobar.

Madison Bumgarner…that..is..a great baseball name.
Scott Hairston…ehh…but he does match our top HR threat.
If Pedro signs with the phillies and pitches well, I’m going to douse my Mets hat in chicken blood and light it on fire.
Doesn’t seem a good fit for Pedro. A flyball pitcher in that park could be trouble.
logic would suggest that but when it comes to things that would irritate mets fans, logic never counts for anything. If pedro goes to philly he will end up going 10-1 with a 3.20 era and an astoundingly low HR count at home.
PEDRO!! we need PEDRO. If the Phillies sign him and he pitches them back to the WS, that would really stink. But, really, is Pedro any worse than what we have now?
If he’s the pedro that was on the Mets the last year and a half then Yes 100% he’s worse then what we have. He of the 5.64 ERA 1.57 Whip and a near 300 BAA.
yes he’s just about as bad if not worse then what has been pitching. He’s not going to be 2000 Pedro, he won’t even be 2006 Pedro ever again. He’s washed up.
exactly, he is not going to be 2006 Pedro. If he had a chance to come close to that, then he wouldve been signed by someone already.
Id rather not have to face him just because I like what he brought to our team in 05 and 06 and it would be a shame to watch him to get hammered first time he comes back to NY, very much like his return to Boston in 2006.
You know darn well it wouldn’t happen that way. He’d come back and shut the Mets down on 2 hits and 9 strikeouts over 7. You can count on that.
yup. I even said on sat i think it was when rodrigo lopez was pitching he’d pitch a 2 hitter. I was close enough.
THE METS NEED A LOT BUT PEDRO MARTINEZ IS CERTAINLY NOT IT!
All PEDRO wants is a little respect, and. half the respect would be about 2 million, I woul dtake a chance on him for that? But, if I had to choose I would rather see a BAT than an ARM.
If Pedro wants respect maybe he should have signed with us for a discount instead of demanding $5,000,000 considering he robbed us for $52 million. He didn’t come close to living up to the deal Omar gave him. He should pitch for an incentive laden contract cause he OWES us!
After reading this someone please tell me that Adam Dunn would not be a difference maker in this lineup and especially if Delgado comes back and Dunn can move to the outfield.
Adam Dunn’s Numbers:
Batting Average: .265
HomeRuns: 22
Hits: 74
Walks: 64
Doubles: 12
RBI’s: 59
On base percentage: .401
Slugging Percentage: .545
OPS: .946
K’s: 89 (doesn’t matter we arent a big strike out team)
Why didn’t we go after him during the off season??? Oh because of the Murphy/Tatis combo in left field. How has that worked out???? Omar has got to go he is a joke.
Imagine if we went out and got two guys Met fans wanted – Adam Dunn and Orlando Hudson. Two guys who signed very cheap deals (20mil/2 years for Dunn/ 3mil/1year for Hudson)
Where would this club be today with those two guys??? Especially if Reyes, Beltran, and Delgado stayed healthy??? We would have a 10 game lead in first!
Dunn was a mistake, definitely. But the Mets were unable to move Castillo, and they weren’t going to eat 3 years 18 million. They were stuck with him. Hudson is a free agent next year, so maybe they can get someone to bite on Castillo’s 2 years 12 million.
Hudson wanted to play in NY and smartly signed just a one year contract. Castillo at 2 for 12 million is easier to move as you can eat some of the contract without it hampering you in an attempt to trade him for a bag of balls. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ODog as a Met next year of course with our luck he will than injure himself
Yeah, playing for the best team in the league in gorgeous SoCal weather must be killing him. I’m sure he can’t wait to come here to find out of Tony Bernazard is really undermining everyone in the organization.
dave27,
Just repeating what was made common knowledge throughout the offseason
Considering all the minor deals that the Mets gave to less deserving players during the off season… I’m sure they could have swung a 1 year 3 million dollar deal for an All Star like Hudson. We gave Tatis almost 2 million and Cora (although deserving) 2 million also. Hudson’s performance for only $3 million far exceeds Cora and Tatis’s together. Hudson could have adapted to left field as I believe there were discussions moving him to left anyway for a year.
Problem is Hudson only took the $3 million because nothing else was there. When the Mets were involved or another team involved at all it would have been more than $3 million. Also Tatis and Cora have no bearing on what you pay for 2nd base. Tatis is a utility guy every team needs and Cora really was brought here to backup 2nd but more importantly give us an actual SS to backup Reyes which in hindsight was a smart move. Problem is you sign Hudson you now have $9 million tied up in 2b and Castillo has nowhere to play except to backup a guy that if healthy plays 140 plus games. $6 million is a lot to pay a guy to play 20 games a year and provide no benefit off the bench since he has no power and is no better defensively than the starter.
I hear you I was just making a point how the Mets let an all star great club house guy go for a few million but signed guys like tatis, cora, redding, etc for 1-2 million dollar deals.
Do you realize Omar brought in Freddie Garcia and if he pitched in a certain amount of games regardless of performance would have made $8 million. Our GM and ownership is lost. No idea what they are doing!
lorenzo, the fact that we didnt get dunn is pathetic I wanted him badly and somehow was in the minority and yes he’d definitely still help. But I have another question, how is it that there were people on this website who actually thought we didnt need dunn or any big bat for that matter? People actually would say “yes he hits 40 HRs and has a high OBP but he strikes out too much” anyone who said that should honestly never be allowed to watch baseball again. Its amazing to me that every off season there are people who drink the Wilpon Kool-aid and are convinced the team is good enough. I just dont understand it.
hit the weights zeile that has been my argument all along.. Anyone who thinks we didnt need another bat just doesnt know baseball or isnt paying attention.
The one thing that could hurt the A’s is to get the picks they have to offer arbritation to Holliday. If the market this offseason is like it was last year they could get hit with Holliday accepting it and based on offers going with the arbritation for a one year deal as he could play on his Coors Field stats getting a bigger dollar amount.
That is the reason why guys Piazza were not offered it at the end of their contracts. Their value was down and the team knew the hearing would give them a bigger payday and didn’t want to take the chance of being stuck with it.
If team’s like the A’s think they are buyers, I don’t think we’re going to get anything done.
On another note how does Buster still have a job. The guy writes an article about selecting the all star teams and states Beltran cannot be included in his list because he is injured but than he turns around and includes Ibanez who is also injured. Buster you need to do some more in depth research.
