According to SNY, Fernando Martinez will have his sore right knee examined today at New York’s Hospital for Special Surgery
Frankly, I have a feeling the Mets may end up sending
martinez back to Triple-A, while promoting Angel Pagan, who is getting closer and closer to being ready for action.
Jerry Manuel told reporters before yesterday’s game that Martinez is feeling better than he did on Friday or Saturday.
Meanwhile, Jose Reyes is still not running the bases, despite being able to hit, catch and throw in St. Lucie.
There is still no hard rehab schedule for Carlos Beltran, who, from what I can gather, is still feeling pain in his bruised knee.
John Maine has yet to throw from a mound, as he continues to rest his shoulder and nurse his way back from a pinched nerve.
Lastly, as far as I can tell, Billy Wagner may be back playing for the Mets this season before J.J. Putz or Carlos Delgado.

lol, i said the same thing about wagner this weekend, except i also included maine and beltran
and reyes
Wagner got the head start for being ready in 2009.
I got a bad feeling about Maine and Beltran.
And I’m very worried as soon as Reyes starts playing in a rehab game (not soon) he will have a setback and be done.
Delagdo might actually come back as planned. sometime in august.
if Reyes is done, so are the Mets, not only because he is irreplaceable by trade, but because hes the one we were supposed to get back after the break.
There is no way this team can survive until August without getting him back, no chance
I agree…Cora is probably playing the best out of any of our replacements but Reyes is a big upgrade offensively and defensively. More importantly, he just brings the energy level up. he gets the fans involved. he brings an excitement and looseness this team needs. People debate the “as reyes goes the team goes” saying, but he has a big impact on this team, regardless if he gets on base or not.
And that cant be replicated when hes on the bench in street clothes while on the DL.
Yet Omar gets NO credit for the Cora signing, which has actually kept us from being 10 games under .500 right now, lol…
i get frustrated when he pops up to the outfield as he does often, but then I remember this guy barely has any ties to our franchise, yet is playing everyday with torn ligaments in his thumb. I give him a lot of respect for that. he works great at-bats and while his range isnt great, plays solid defense.
There is no question Cora is a great professional and teammate. He was an excellent signing, but there is no denying right now that he is exhausted and exposed as someone who isnt an everyday player. I appreciate everything he has done, without a doubt, but he cant buy a hit these days because he is worn out playing with an injury.
Come back Jose
Well there is at least one starter in the system pitching lights out now — Niese.
If Livan continues to struggle, they need to bring Niese up to see if he can give them better starts. The Mets cannot afford anymore to fall far behind in any game.
I have this bad feeling that Livan may continue to get worse as the season goes on. That’s what happened last year.
good point, that did happen last year…and needs to be watched for.
Niese needs to be up for Redding or Nieve immediately.
Redding has already been moved to the ‘pen to make room for Ollie, who will be on the mound Weds.
yeah, i read that after. Then Nieve needs to go for Niese.
You know, I would usually agree, but for once, I’d like to just let him stay down there and continue to succeed. If he is still tearing it up on August 30, then call him up so he could be on the postseason roster (if we were ever-so-lucky)…
I don’t want to get his confidence dashed again…why not let him continue to dominate AAA like the Sox are doing with Bucholz? Heck, if anything it is doing is raising his stock by the day, too.
With Redding in the bullpen now, I don’t know where you’d put Livan…I think Livan will be fine, he’s just had a rough month where he didn’t get much help from his offense or the defense, mixed in with one or two awful starts…it happens. He’s still a viable #5 (I look at Nieve as our #4, to be honest with you).
If Livan is fine, I would agree. Keep him there.
Fine meaning no more than 3-4 runs given up per 6-7 innings. But if he continues to pitch poorly or gets worse, the Mets cannot afford to wait till August 30th. They need every win they can get now to stay in the race, and they can’t afford to put out a poorly producing starter who just last year faded badly in the second half.
None of these guys are coming back after the ASB. 8/1 at the erliest, and I think Wagner likely is the 1st on (after ollie).
Would not surpirse me to not see Reyes or Maine at all.
Delgado should be back in mid-late august, and Putz by september. And that aint no clavery!
F Mart should go down anyway. He needs more work in AAA to be ready
If Reyes needs surgery to repair is tear then get it done.
Stop yanking the fans chains that he might be back.
If he needs surgery get it done now so that he can recover and rehab with plenty of time to be ready for 2010.
I am willing to bet any taker that the above will eventually happen. Except that Mets want to sell more tickets in the end of the year so they are trying to delay as much as possible.
You have a bet. I’m not saying he’ll be back soon … just that this idea he needs surgery is coming out of left field.
So the bet is on the surgery.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t put anything past this medical staff, especially in regards to “coming out of left field”
You mean the same medical staff that has treated Hampton, Muldur, Posada and Mariano Rivera over the last couple of years?
i mean more-so the cloud of secrecy.
By the way, Cora is playing a fine SS.
If we could get a healthy Delgado back, that would go a long way. At that point you trade for some one with a high OBP so that there are ducks on the pond.
Also, as other have suggested, DWright needs to stop batting for average and give us a little power. I would be happy with a .280 average and some pop over this light .340 average.
Closer to .320 now, 10th in the league, whoop de freakin do
David Wright: King of the Singles.
He’s not hitting .340, he’s hitting .326, which is no longer way above his career average. He hit .325 with 30 HR, 42 2B, 107 RBI, and 34 SB in 2007, when Rick Down was the hitting coach…
Unless he hits .345 and his K numbers drop dramatically to where he finishes the season with around 120 (half as many in the 2nd half as the 1st half), then he will be okay in my eyes with hitting just 15 HR…other wise, he needs to be crushing balls out of visiting ballparks like crazy like he was the last three years.
I dont even know what to say about him. Part of me understands the change in swing to adapt to a park. But part of me also thinks he should never have changed what made him successful. He has tweaked his swing every year, he used to spray the ball opposite field with power, then he went to an uppercut, and now he has no power.
at the same, any transition cant be that instantly consistent. there has to be growing pains I assume.
Maybe I missed something but didn’t Wagner bypass the Mets’ trainers until recently? If so, then shouldn’t they hire him?
Wasn’t it reported on this blog that Beltran would be back shortly after the AS break? What about that now?
small point, but if Fernando Martinez goes on the DL instead of going to AAA he will use up his rookie eligibility this year.
