David Wright and Carlos Beltran were voted in to the All-Star Game as starters by fans around MLB, while Johan Santana and Francisco Rodriguez were selected by fellow players.
The four players going to the All-Star Game for the third-place Mets are the most for any team in the National League.
Santana told reporters that he will pitch in the All-Star Game if asked by Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, pointing out that the day the game is played will technically be the day he throws a bullpen session between starts.
David Wright said, regarding the game, according to the Daily News
“It’s obviously an incredible honor to be an All-Star… But… the All-Star Game is not something I’m focused on right now. I’ll go there. I’ll enjoy it. I’ll have a good time. And I’ll hopefully have some good experiences. When it’s all said and done, we have to find a way to fix what’s going on here and turn this thing around.”
Speaking as a Mets fan…

if we wanted him to stay home, maybe we all should have voted for Pedro Feliz.
ha!
really, though, how silly. He’s one of the best 3Bs in the game and being honored for it, and people want him to stay home because they think it’ll do him good. One team, one million MD’s.
The All Star Game means nothing…he knows he’s one of the best in the league, so I don’t think this is any boost to his confidence or anything.
Home field advantage? For one, we likely won’t be in the WS, and two, the better team should win no matter what.
it may not mean anything to you and me, but I’m positive it’s a pretty big deal to him (not to mention the fans who voted for him, and so obviously DO want to see him play)
It doesn’t mean anything to me, no, and it doesn’t mean anything to the game in general. It’s a joke, and I think the fact that it determines home field advantage (which really isn’t that big of a deal, but still…) is also a joke considering the fact that it is nothing but a popularity contest.
What’s more important, Wright playing the ASG and continuing to be tired and slump? Or Wright using those 3 days to relax at his Manhattan apartment and watch it on his giant HDTV?
I say having a rested Wright after the AS break is more important to the team that pays him, the NEW YORK METS. He is not paid by MLB, he is paid by the Wilpons…his obligation is to them, not us.
I am in no way defending the relevance of the ASG, or that it determines advantage. I think it’s totally stupid.
But it exists, and netither you nor I have any idea what it means to the players to be there. We do know that it affects things like salary, and in career evaluation.
If you were among the best in the world at your job, despite working for a sub-par company, and you were being honored as such with the opportunity to go to an exclusive gathering of other elites, would you turn that down so you could sit at home instead? Because a bunch of people who have no bearing on your job at all thought it was a good idea? No way.
You’re right about it having an impact on salary, value, etc., but he was voted in and will get the “2009 AS” next to his name whether he plays or not.
And I actually do know what this game means to some people, because I know DW’s brother and have met him a couple a times, and he DOES take it as an honor and wants to do whatever it takes to please the fans. Trust me, this is big to him, but like I said, the man needs a break and sometimes you have to swallow your pride and put your commitments to your franchise ahead of your commitments to the fans.
There isn’t a fan on here that wouldn’t want him to come back from the ASB fully rested and crushing the ball again…
While I did vote that I think he should stay home and rest, I think it is his duty as a MLB player to attend if he was voted in. I don’t think 2 or 3 innings in the “relatively meaningless” All Star Game is going to sap him for the rest of the season.
On the other hand, it would be very convenient if he came down with that stomach bug a few days before.
Wright can handle the ASG as a break, even though he’s playing, it would not be for a full game and its not the same mental grind as what he goes through 162 games of the season.
He has proved that he can play through just about anything, not as effectively as most fans are demanding, but the guy has heart, pride and determination.
This is the biggest load of crap! Just like having to wear the red hats this weekend. OK, for a good cause, but the Mets should never have been forced into such a humiliating positoin. In Philly, wearing Red HATS!!! JOHAN WITH A RED HAT??? Sickening! All Stars – WE HAVE NONE!!! Additionally, NONE SHOULD GO!!! STAY HOME, REST, AND THINK ABOUT HOW LAME YOU HAVE BEEN! OK, I understand that they are doing their best, but their best, with the exception of a few, isn’t good enough. Even Santana walks the pitcher regularly, which there is no excuse for and I think i remember K-Rod doing it too:( Confidence rating is at 1. I couldn’t get on, but I was gonna vote 1 for the very first time for me, but then I saw that it is winning. It’s a shame, but very strange that we are still in it.
Calm down…this team does have all stars. the guys voted in deserve it, but they deserve the rest even more, considering what theyve been through mentally and physically this season.
Swallow your pride, stay home and rest, guys. The only one I’d say should go is K-Rod…
I would rather have Wright stay home because it is an embarassment for him to be in the All Star game. He does not deserve it.
I suggest you take a look at the stats. Just because he hasn’t been able to Superman the Mets into first place doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve to be the All-Star starter for the NL. You can’t offer this up as a punishment for the guy for putting together an excellent first half among an underwhelming B team lineup.
i guess we can count you among the “it’s Wright’s fault” crowd.
I think your anger is overwhelming your reason. Who deserves to go, then? As you accuse pro-DW’s as being “apologists” and of only looking at the good things, youseem to be only seeing the bad. Without him we’re 10 games back rather than 4.
I guess you folks can tell that I’m a bit mad. I’ll add this – they should bring Ollie up already and tie him to Omar. If Ollie goes overboard, he should take his benefactor with him. Actually though; I don’t know that they’ll do with Ollie – and I’m not alone. Sorry for the extreme venting, but I’m not alone on that either. Someone described Omar as being like Ollie. One day, he’s Koufax and one day, he’s Doug Sisk. Makes a good deal, then a dog. I’m hopeful though about Nieve.
You do know Ollie is already up and scheduled to pitch on Weds?
No, I didn’t, Xavier, thanks for the tip. Against the Dodgers, eh – talk about easing him back in.
Because the Mets have a choice where the #3 spot in the rotation comes up…lol
you have to wonder how this ollie deal will hurt the franchise moving forward as the wilpons will no doubt be snake bitten by it and probably refuse to meet any FA pitcher demands leaving us with alot of missed opportunities on guys who actually deserve that kind of money (ex: John Lackey this coming offseason)
I am not one of these Mets fans that hates the team and wants to trade everyone when they lose. I am a huggggge Jose Reyes fan, and a big Beltran fan, I love Johan, Krod, I like Pelfrey alot, and Feliciano. With that said, I am not a David Wright fan at all. I think he is vastly overrated, in fact I cannot name a more overrated player in baseball.
Wright has a knack for making a big error, baserunning blunder, K, or hitting into a double play. I think the Mets GM whether it is Omar Minaya or Tony Bernazzard after this season has to build the team with David Wright as a role player. I don’t mean role player as a player off the bench, I obviously think he should be the starting 3B. I think the team needs to be built with Jose Reyes, Beltran, and a power hitter from the outside as the core of this team. Along with a firey, in your face type leader.
If I were the GM last year I would have traded Luis Castillo for Eric Byrnes, I would have signed Orlando Hudson, and Manny. So my team would have been:
Reyes
Hudson
Beltran
Manny
Delgado
Wright
Byrnes
Schneider
you offer up Eric Byrnes as a firey, in your face type leader. to that i say this… a guy who bats .216 may be in your face, but he is no leader… at least not one that anyone will listen to.
I think hudson possesses some of those characteristics cliff floyd had on the team in the clubhouse that we have missed since 2006 so I dont think a guy like byrnes is necessary. (Hudson will be available again this yea) I really hope if omar gets fired its not bernazzard replacing him I think if omar goes tony needs to go too. I hate this whole fire one guy policy, fire the whole staff and get a new one in here with a different philosophy, one that doesnt care about what “flavor” theyre bringing to the team.
I love how people say “build the team with Wright, not around him.” Um, that’s what Omar has done, except everyone around him is HURT.
As for trading Castillo, you make it sound so easy…nobody wanted his contract, so it was impossible. This offseason they can probably just cut him, and yes, they should sign Hudson, which is what I wanted last offseason. Hudson is a producer, and All-Star, a GG-caliber 2B, and a leader. He DOES remind me a lot of Cliff Floyd, HTWZ.
Manny? Eh, I wouldn’t have minded him, but I’m not sad we didn’t get him. I have nothing against him (other than the fact that he is a cheater) as a player, but I think this team can win without his enormous contract.
I say go after Adam Dunn, sign Hudson this offseason (he already wants to be a Met), and keep developing guys like Holt, Mejia, Davis, Thole, Flores, etc. I think Holt, Mejia, and Thole will be in the big leagues at some point in 2010, you watch. There is a HUGE youth movement coming up, and Omar deserves some credit for it. His signings and draft picks are all starting to surface:
Niese, Parnell, Kunz, Murphy, Pelfrey, Niesen, Evans, F-Mart, Mejia, Holt, Davis, Thole, etc…
Wright should play.
It will be good for him to be around the other stars of the game. He deserves it, and hopefully it will give him some hope for the second half…
I think the vote options are rigged :)
I would like to see:
A) Stay home and rest
B) Play and have fun
C) Although I would prefer all of the Mets rest, I understand the value of the AS game and I don’t mind my position players taking part.
I think most people would be C … they realize that there is nothing to gain from the AS game, and being selfish they want their players to rest and not risk injury, but most of us also realize that position players are at an extremely low risk of getting injured in the All-Star game, and that it’s part of the game.
well said.
If there is nothing to gain, why not use the time to rest? I think we are being more selfish in wanting him to put OUR wants in front of HIS needs…
The man needs a break…give it to him.
Good lord, I can’t stand having this inane argument every year…
What do you people think happens when players not in the AS game “go home and rest?” Do you think they climb into a tub of ice for 3 days? Do you think they induce hibernation?
The All-Star game is an exhibition. It is 2 days for the players in the game to take a break from the day to day grind, hang out with their peers, and be showcased for all of baseball fans. If you think that playing 4 innings of an exhibition and otherwise having fun and getting his mind off the Mets grind is somehow bad for Wright..well I don’t know what to tell you. The way I see it, if he gos home he’s going to sit and agonize over the missed opportunities of the first half.
It’s a distraction. Distractions are good.
I agree 110%, Wright has had a very eventful first half and has worked extremely hard and should feel honored to make the All Star Game for the 4th consecutive year.
Earned or not, he will make the most of the opportunity, i will never forget the fact that he almost pitched the 16th inning of last year’s game. That shows he will do what it takes to help any team that he is on, and as fans we need to recognize that loyalty.
This year he was injured in the WBC, but did not miss playing time and took great pride in playing for Team USA and said that he would never have played hurt if he thought it would ruin his chances of playing for the Mets on Opening Day.
i’m not really sure that DW deserves the nod this year, but he got it, and he owes it to the sport to go out and participate.
I’m in the let him play crowd. He’s been up and down and I know how damned frustrating he can be when he’s down. But he didn’t luck into his average and the fans voted him in. Were they Mets fans? By the sound of some of the fans from this site, it wasn’t just Mets fans. (I’m not 100% if he should be there or not.)
None-the-less it was and the All Star Game is a fun time for the players. So let him have fun. Punishing himself isn’t going to help his game. He needs to get out of his head for a few days — along with the rest of the team. It’s not like the WBC. It’s a few innings of a game that means little (especially to the Mets the way they’ve been playing.)
A quick note on Ollie: Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter if he’s lights out. Santana lost giving up 2 runs on Sunday. Unless he learned to hit 300 down in the minors, he’s not going to be much of a help one way or another.
