Mets manager Jerry Manuel talked to reporters after yesterday’s 2–0 loss to the Phillies, and had the following to say regarding:
The lack of offense, as the Mets scored just three runs in three games against the Phillies, and had no extra hits on Saturday and Sunday:
“Well, we have to continue to pitch as Johan pitched today… There will come a time when we get those hits. I believe we have the guys who can get those hits at the right time. But, we have to pitch well and play good defense, we did those things but came up short… Right now, that’s just the way we’re built.”
…everytime jerry says, ‘That’s just they we’re built,’ i hear it as shot at Omar Minaya, since, technically, omar is the builder…
The team maybe being demoralized:
“No… I think when you start to see errors, people not laying down bunts, those types of things, then there’s a reason to be concerned or discouraged.”
…ummm, that is what i’m seeing…
Treading water, .500, and being four games out of first place:
“Well, I think, there’s a lot of baseball left, a lot of baseball left. I do believe it’s going to take pitching and defense, I do believe that. I think we are, hopefully, getting that on order. We’ve gotten some decent outings from some people, and as long as we keep that in order I think we have a chance to win every night, and it gives them the chance to got hot and that can carry us a long way.”

Blow the whole thing up
Good bye Jerry
Good bye Omar
Good bye Fred
Mark Cuban wants to own a team. Why not?
As well as Johan has been pitching, I bet we could get a king’s ransom for him, especially if we can get Boston and NY into a bidding war. We sure as heck are not winning with him. Why not get the parts that will?
I’m tired of losing.
im tired as well. Yesterday was the first game in a while where we actually did get out bunts down. We didnt make any big errors. We just got beat straight up with our weak team vs. a good team.
It was bad. Especially Dwrights double play ball with bases loaded.
But lets be serious, dont be giving up on Johan.
I was thinking the same thing about Cuban. The problem is that MLB doesn’t want him in “the club.” The Yankees would have a serious problem with him because he is a PR machine/nightmare and would steal headlines from the pinstripes. What is bad for the Yankees is bad for baseball, or that is at least what they want you to believe. He needs to win desperately, something the Wilpons want but don’t need. He is incredibly fan friendly because he knows how to cater to clients. No one I know ever deals with the Wilpons in Business and that has made them detached.
Can you just imagine Cuban sitting behind home plate cursing the umps or saying to Jimmy Roliins mom that your son is a thug? How awesome would that be? Do the Wilpons even go to the Mets games? The closest they get it SNY or maybe the Brooklyn Cyclones because nothing bad comes from Brooklyn.
this team scored three runs all weekend…in citizens bank park
is it OK to talk about how much DW sucks now? after 2 big weekend 0-fers against the yanks and phils? or are we still salivating over his batting average?
Not sure what you’re looking for…should we bash him? Why? Yea the guy blew it big time in some big spots. Real big. But what are we gonna do about it right now? He’s in bad form right now, but he’s the only healthy star we got and there are a lot more important holes on our team.
You want the green light to bash him? go ahead, cant really say its not deserved, but I dont see the point.
I was at Saturday’s game and DW could barely walk, it was really sad to see him look like it was so much effort just to move.
He’s battered and bruised, but right now he’s the closest thing we have to healthy, he wants to be out there every day and for that we should be proud instead of just bashing the living daylights out of him.
if he really is that beat up, it would be nice if he didn’t have to attend the ASG. A nice 3 day break can do wonders to refresh a guy!
Can’t say i disagree, but i just hope that he is in hibernation today and can come out tomorrow and wreak havoc on the Dodgers, he usually does, so i am fairly confident that he will have a good series.
if DW is really banged up, then he should be getting a day off here and there. he can’t play himself into an injury just because the other guys can’t play. i mean, we couldn’t find someone else to go 0-for-weekend with a big mental error once this series?
He should have gotten Wednesday off, yes i know he begged into the lineup because he wanted to stop the skid, but Jerry makes up the lineup card, “No, you’re not playing today, end of story” would have been the appropriate action, but it didn’t happen and now the whole team suffers.
Someone who cares that much and has the weight of the sweep on his shoulders put there by the fans does need to get rested more often, no matter what he says.
i don’t really think he sucks, but i am tired about hearing about his batting average. 5 HR is really an unacceptably low number from an all-star caliber third baseman.
i mean, unless we’re done with 2009 and our big thrill is watching him chase a batting titles. then bring on those opposite field bloops baby!
He would rather have the wins than the highest batting average in the majors any day of the week.
As far as the HR’s, not much you can do, if he was swinging for the fences and pulling everything that’s one thing, but he does seem to be making a conscious effort to spray the ball around the field.
Say what you want, the guy cares and will play sick, injured, exhausted, etc , can’t kick him to the curb so fast, not when you have so many guys on the DL making that much money with no timetable for return.
Of course, because beating on David Wright is obviously the easiest thing to do…let’s not put the blame on Jerry Manuel for his awful decision-making, complete lack of discipline, and fondness for saying one thing and doing another…
Let’s not blame Howard Johnson, who has seemingly ruined David Wright’s approach and swing at the plate…and even if it wasn’t HoJo who did that, he has done NOTHING to fix it…
Yes, Wright is a professional and should be able to correct some things himself, but then why do we pay Manuel and Johnson in the first place?
We should pro-rate their paychecks for however much making sure the railing doesn’t fall down is worth…that’s all they do. It’s truly pathetic…
It’s not Omar’s fault, guys. Yes, he made some bad moves, but who hasn’t? Every single GM has made a bad investment, so let’s not lynch Omar yet. I think Freddy Coupon and the team’s utter lack of healthy players has put him in a bad spot, and the only person with a tougher job right now is President Obama. I’ve been saying it all along: if Manuel, Johnson, or anybody on this medical staff is back next season, I’d be f-ing shocked.
dwright5, I think you said it all perfectly. I agree on all counts, particularly your assessment of the buffoon who serves as the manager of this team.
And the buffoon who is supposedly “leading” this country.
Sometimes I wonder what Fred and Jeff are thinking about
probably thinking….”why did we give him a 4-year extension?”
Owning one of the most valuable franchises in sports, and making a ton of money? They got a good gig going!
Oh, and they also authorize the biggest payroll in the NL, and one of the highest in MLB.
They run a team the way they are supposed to. Set a budget, and hiring BB executives to handle it.
You want Steinbrenner from his glory days? Or someone mentioned Cuban. He meddles for sure, but do his teams ever win anything?
Maybe the Wilpons sell out to a corporation like some of these other teams. Then bye bye big payroll.
cuban ran a team under a salary cap. he would spend like crazy on an MLB team and he would win.
hell, jim dolan would be an awesome MLB owner
I can’t bash Wright. He has been the only bright spot and that was the only scoring opportunity we had. We can’t put him into a situation where he has to produce everytime he is up although it would be nice to see him hit for some more power.
As far as the “it is how we are built” comment, Jerry has to be frustrated. This is a team that easily can absorb more payroll and they don’t. I feel we need to stay the course and wait for the injured to return, but part of that is because I do not trust Omar. Anyone can say lets get Krod, Beltran, Delgado. It is the smaller moves that he has failed in. Yes he has signed low risk guys, some like Tatis, Santos and Nieves but his trades have not worked out very well other than Santana. I don’t want him trading the last few guys we have to possibly save a season. It reminds me a lot of the year the Mets got V. Zambrano and Benson but gave away Kazmir. We missed the playoffs and lost a solid prospect that is better than everyone in the rotation other than Santana.
If I am the Wilpons I would have the GM and Manager on notice that they need to improve or changes are coming. We can’t keep the same culture year after getting the same results for top money and miss the playoffs in unacceptable. The question is do the Wilpon’s care? I am not sure they do.
good points…but its a fine line of pressuring Omar to improve the club. Like you said, you dont want him to make a forced trade for a quick fix at the risk of losing a future player…but that is a tough balance by the pressure from upstairs. If Omar feels like he HAS to make a deal, thats where the bad trades come from.
The Kazmir trade came from an interim GM. He wanted to make a splash and impress, and boy, did he make a splash.
sorry to nit pick, but the Benson deal wasnt that bad. partially to give a chance to a talented oft-injured starter but more-so to clear the way for DWright at third.
Victor Zambrano and Kris Benson should never be mentioned in the same sentence as Alex Rios or Adam Dunn…that’s just foolish.
That being said, I see the mentality. Trust me, I understand both sides of the argument…the fact that this team is looking worse than the team from the early 2000s just kills me, though.
I have the patience to ride the storm out, but not too many NY fans do, and unfortunately I myself cannot sell the stadium out, show support in numbers reaching the thousands, and keep the morale in the clubhouse up…
Take St. Louis for example: no matter their record, they always sell out Busch Stadium, because they know they have a good coaching staff who is going to make their club play hard every day. They also believe in that thing called “pride” and have what it takes to be a true fan, not these fair-weather retards on the east coast. It really annoys me, so sometimes I get caught up in whatever it takes to see that stadium in Queens rocking like it was in 2006 and 2007…
def right on about the patience factor. It hurts to listen to WFAN after a loss, any loss, because its like being at a funeral.
The double play was rough but i can take that over standing there looking at strikes go by without even swinging with the bases loaded.
Double plays are frustrating, no question, but you put the ball into play and make the other team make the perfect play and throws, the burden is on them to get the outs.
they’ll care when the dodger shrine empties out. remember what shea looked like in 2003-2004? throw a recession on top of that. shake shack is only gonna sell so many tickets.
I still think Jerry is a lousy manager. He might be hiding behind the injuries (bye throwing his guys under the bus), but he is part of the problem, not the solution.
He needs to go after the season, even if it is to clear the air.
Anybody who sets foot on a major league field should be able to play smart, fundamental baseball, regardless of their talent. They should also have some sort of accountability for their mistakes and unproductivity.
But no, not in Jerry’s clubhouse. This team likes him as a friend (aka, bench coach), but does not respect them as a manager. How much longer is he going to get away with lying, too?
Its not DW, It’s not Omar, It’s not the Wilpons…It is JERRY!! He has a loser mentality.. He is a clown running the circus….
Clown: NOUN: A buffoon or jester who entertains by jokes, antics, and tricks in a circus, play, or post game press conference.
Jerry must GO!!
I am so sick of listening to the empty ramblings of this manager. Yes, he has a really weak roster to work with. But thanks to his management this team adds up to even less than the sum of its weak parts.
Jerry-speak is just so much blah-blah, meaningless, empty, white noise. Even if we get our full roster back I have no confidence in this guy as a manager.
This may sound silly, but I think Tatis should be sent to AAA for a while when Pagan is ready to come back, no Martinez.
If anything, Martinez plays his heart out when he is on the field, and I hope his knee is fine. He will catch fire at the plate sooner or later…if not this year, then next April probably. Let him finish this season in the big leagues (or at least until guys start getting healthy) because every single AB is experience for the kid. Let him be around guys like Beltran, Cora, Church, Sheffield, and even Delgado (whenever he is with the team) so he can learn from the veterans.
Tatis on the other hand just frustrates me the way Castro did…while Castro was much lazier than he, Tatis, just doesn’t seem to be playing with his head screwed on tight. Mental mistakes are leading to him making physical mistakes and grounding into crucial DPs at the plate…let him go to AAA to
A) wake him up mentally…show him he is not guaranteed a spot in NY
B) let him work on his swing
C) let him pound AAA pitching to get some confidence
I’d vote to just DFA Tatis.
Anyone else starting to wonder whether all these injuries are for real?
To be honest, this is how I feel ….
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P_wy8ebqKbA
Remember the good old days when players would play through any injury? I think its too easy these days for people to ask out of the line up.
No one getting the salaries that they are getting should be asking for any days off.
The only way David Wright gets a day off is for the trainer to tell Jerry “he’s not going in today”. Maybe that same method should be handled the same way with the other players.
The injuries are ridiculous and are being milked in my opinion. I understand that they cannot be overly optimistic to the fans about the status of the players returns, but some occasional updates on timetables would be appreciated.
I agree, it seems that the slightest discomfort puts these guys out of the game. No one on the Mets plays through anything anymore (with few exceptions). That only feeds the argument that the Mets are Soft, besides the fact that they fold when challenged.
But on the other hand, when the Mets don’t put someone on the DL, and the player gets injured further, they get lambasted.
Obviously if they need to be on the DL with a serious injury that’s one thing but sitting out for 3 or more games is wasting space on the roster.
Everyone needs to be rested one day here and there,if for no other reason but to let their bodies recover without the daily strain.
No one wants them to play to the point where the injury can get worse, because then instead of losing them for 15 days, they are gone from 30-50 days.
