The Mets lost to the Dodgers tonight, by the score of 8 to 0.

The Least You Should Know:
The Mets were shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since 2005 and have not scored in their last 22 innings. The team has also not had an extra-base hit since Friday night.
Mike Pelfrey, who allowed five runs, four earned on eight hits over three-plus innings, had good stuff tonight and was locating well, but you have to tip your cap to the Dodger hitters for having a good approach against Pelfrey.
Other Observations and Notes:
The Mets are uncompetitive at this point. It’s frustrating watching them knowing once the opposition puts a crooked number on the board the game is over. At the least the Mets weren’t wearing red hats.
I originally bought into the thought that any one player like Mark DeRosa or Adam Dunn wouldn’t replace the three-fourths of the core that is missing, but at this point the Mets may just need to make a change for the sake of making one to shake up the clubhouse.
Citi Field was dead tonight. Not even much of a response when Manny Ramirez stepped to the plate for the first time. Can you blame them?
I wonder who Fred Wilpon was rooting for tonight? I kid, I kid.
The Mets continue their three-game series against the Dodgers with Oliver Perez making his anticipated a return to the mound tomorrow night.

Good stuff or not, Pelfrey’s approach to pitching to Furcal in the 2nd was what opened the floor gates. He treated Furcal like he was Babe Ruth. It was stupid pitching and from that point on he stunk.
can you blame him? everyone in the opposing lineup is babe ruth in relative terms.
So Blake DeWitt can hit one out of CitiField, but none of our guys can. Ridiculous.
i agree about the trade to shake things up…this team looks hopeless and like they know they cant win
Two weeks ago I was blue in the face saying we needed a bat like Dunn and we probably had to overpay to get him because this team will be in trouble. The argument back was consistently that one guy will not replace three guys. I still don’t understand that. Wright has hit the tank with no protection and the rest of the lineup has been exposed. I guess it isn’t too late to get a bat now and give these guys something to play for, but I feel like the Mets could have won at least two games they lost with Dunn in the lineup instead of Tatis.
The 3 through 6 spots in the Met lineup are 2 for 42 the last 3 games. If they the Mets get absoutely nothing from the so called “heart of their lineup”, they have no chance to score. This was a no sweat game for the Dodger pitching staff. Never were in a situation where they felt they could be scored on.
It’s not just the lack of hits. It’s that most of the outs are incredibly weak. Strikeouts, weak grounders and soft flyballs. Maybe 3 or 4 balls hit hard every night.
Mr. Nichols – nice to see you here! I think maybe you should move the “I Kid I Kid” line down a paragraph to where you describe Ollie’s return as anticipated.
This is turning into a lost season. Trading away prospects for Dunn/Derosa makes almost zero sense in these conditions. If anything, hope that Delgado can come back quickly so we can trade him to pick up a chip or two. Maybe we could pick up something worthwhile for Livan or Sheff. Better yet, hope that a contenders second baseman gets hurt so we can deal Luis. Time to retool for next season.
I agree..
With some intriguing high potential prospects (fmart, holt and mejia) and many other potential impact players on the horizon, Omar can work on constructing the team’s next core.
the problem with that is…they are the mets high potential prospects…but that doesnt necessarily mean they are going to be stars…they are just the best in the mets pathetic system…
they do suck but…
Pelfrey can’t got out there and give them 3 runs like that. That 3 run inning was all his doing regardless if Manny’s popup was a bloop.
Fact is…if this team is down by 3 runs the opposing pitchers are going to just attack the zone making it a lot more difficult to mount a comeback.
Lets hope they gain internal strength when the “troops” come back and they play 600/700 baseball. God help us. LOL
the same troops who couldn’t seal the deal the last two septembers? these are the guys who are gonna lead the team to .700 ball and a playoff berth?
get real. this season, and era, are over.
Oh I agree with you. There is no chance they play 700 ball, or even 600 ball. And I probably agree this team aint making the playoffs if I had to bet. With that said, I am a Mets fan and there are 2 ways to get into the playoffs. We have sen the past few years teams on paper being worse than us winning world series. Anything can happen. You have to believe in this pathetic team no matter what.
or i can apply logic and reasoning to the situation
If you do that, then all is lost, and there is no reason to watch Baseball anymore, then what will you do w/ all that free time?
Because the NL East is so BAD, there is only one way fo thr METS to make the playoffs, BEAT THE PHILLIES!! That aint gonna happen. I want to see the METS get swept, again, and lose bad. I hate to say it, but, Beltran looking at strike three in 2006 was our season. That sume it all up, close, but, not close enough. Omar, made a mistake when he did not dump Delgado. I find myself wanting the NATS to win. They have a better chancethan we do. DISGUSTED, FRUSTRATED, ANGRY, UPST, pick a word. Anything. At this point I turn on a game waiting for a loss, if, by some miracle we win, its a bonus. I have zero faith in these guys. I give up, like they did. Spare us the pian, and, please forfeit the rest of the season? Dont make us watch these awful games and hear the trash talk from other fans. Just start working on te future…hahahahah WHAT FUTURE? We had a future in 2006, 2007, 208 and 2009, and what did that get us?
Matt should put a “Ya Gotta Believe!” sign somewhere on the site..just cause this would be the year the mets somehow make it into the playoffs…after having powerhouses and failing….or they will just continue to downward spiral…one of those two
btw, according to mlbtraderumors…the mets are one of six teams or so that have expressed serious interest in Halladay…along with cards, phils, yanks, and redsox or something along those lines
which no offense means nothing. No chance we get Halladay.
i dont think u can say theres no chance? Omar might be realizing hes not fixing this offense with 1 player…but if u have johan and halladay 1-2 with pelf as ur #3…u might be able to win even with this terrible offense…
You’d have to offer f-mart and flores along with a pitcher prob….and i think i would for halladay…but who knows
Oh you are talking about Roy? Yeah that is even worse. The minute he is “available” there are going to be like 10 teams offering more than we. The package you just offered would not be enough.
But lets all pray..hee hee.
Come guys, Lets go mets??
When healthy the mets didn’t make the playoffs two years running. So even if they get all their players back what would guarantee them a run to the playoffs?
Start preparing for next year.
“Mike Pelfrey, who allowed five runs, four earned on eight hits over three-plus innings, had good stuff tonight and was locating well, but you have to tip your cap to the Dodger hitters for having a good approach against Pelfrey.”
Honestly, I must be on another planet. Reading that, I’m hoping to everything holy that the poster was being facetious.
Had good stuff? A bunch of his so-called “power sinkers” were in the 87-88 range tonight. That’s good stuff? What game were you watching? He wasn’t using his breaking stuff effectively — as usual — either.
Was locating well? I’m sorry, I fail to see how it can be considered “locating well” when you walk a man to load the bases, and then follow that walk with another. So you walk one, walk the next, allowing a run.
That’s locating well? This site is spiraling out of control, like the Mets’ season.
This site is run more and more by the mets themselves. I agree pelt was terrible the whole team has been terrible. In sept 2007 when some of us here questioned the mets and their play we were called chicken littles. Well guess what? The sky did fall on that season and for this franchise ever since then. Last year was just as bad but expected because of the previous year. What a disgrace
Did you guys see Omar Minaya’s press conference today? I don’t think he spoke a single comprehensible sentence. He was talking about not wanting to make trades because the guys that are injured are better than anyone he can trade for but he’s not sure if the guys that are injured are going to come back (btw, it’s my gut feeling that Reyes is out for the year). What scares me more is that I wonder if the Mets have any real long-term plans. They’re becoming a crappy version of the Yankees of the 2000s — just patchwork players every year and get a free agent — but they’re not as good as those teams.
Here’s my plan.
Trade Ryan Church and Brian Stokes even up for an outfielder and a relief pitcher. Even up. Just changing some players could alter the dynamic. I don’t know who, but do something, and don’t give up any real prospects.
Then, see who can come back.
At the end of this year, don’t resign any FA (except Putz). Sign Matt Holliday. Get a younger guy for RF, until FMart is really ready. Sign Putz and trade him for prospects, or to Texas for one of their catching prospects. Sign a Todd Zeile type to move to 1B.
You have then reconstituted your team into a different bunch, capable of competing.
It’s over for this year.
I’m attached to Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Feliciano, K-Rod. Sheffield is useful for this year, Cora too. Cora, I think, has another year on his contract, so I guess he can stick around for ‘10. And I do still believe in Maine, so I guess keep him too.
Everyone else needs to go. Some of our pen pieces and Church might attract some decent prospect types. Livan could be a useful piece for a team that thinks it’s in contention. Maybe someone will take on Ollie if we pay half his salary. Maybe someone will take on Castillo after a less-bad 2009 season and with only two more years left on his deal.
We need to get a true cleanup hitter, and not an old, washed-up one. Delgado’s presence is missed, but Delgado will probably never be himself again. We also need an outfielder with speed and some pop (read: Alex Rios) to hit behind Reyes.
The Astros would probably part with Roy Oswalt after this year because they need to cut salary and shake up their team. If he’d accept a trade to NY, he’d be a good #2 starter. If you can get him and Carlos Lee together, you’ve solved two major problems. With the Mets paying the contracts, you might be able to get those two for nothing more than F-Mart and a couple lower-end prospects like Reese Havens and Murphy/Evans. Niese is also a good piece to get a trade like this done.
Next year, Thole needs to be given every chance to win the starting catcher’s job out of spring training, and Brad Holt needs to be in competition for a rotation spot.
Can sign Adam LaRoche for not very much and slot him in like sixth. Also Ty Wigginton will be a FA and would be a nice addition to the bench.
Holliday will be expensive, but Jason Bay will be a free agent too unless the Sox sign him to an extension. He’d be a better fit than Holliday, I feel.
So if you can somehow swing a Carlos Lee trade and sign Bay and LaRoche and Orlando Hudson while dumping Castillo, you have a projected 2010 starting lineup of: Reyes, Wright, Beltran, Lee, Bay, LaRoche, Hudson, Thole.
That’ll have us cookin’ with fire.
By the way, Nichols, Pelfrey threw 95 pitches (with a not-very-good ratio of 53 strikes and 42 balls) and walked three guys in three innings. How does this strike you as him having good location?
Too bad making the playoffs is not like the NYC Marathon. With the NYC Marathon, if you did not earn or win a race entry, you could choose to join a charity and gain entrance that way.
To me, the Mets have been great hosts/guests to other teams (not scoring runs, giving extra outs) …. some would call that being charitable.
If only that was enough to make the playoffs, we would not have to worry about playing .700 baseball.
The last round of starts by starting pitchers (other than Johan) has been horrendous. When you have an offense already with one arm and both legs tied behind their backs, you can’t afford this kind of starting pitching.
Is this really our SP finally falling back to earth? Or are these pitchers feeling the pressure of no offensive support, trying to be too fine and in the process imploding like we seen this passed week?
both. pelfrey is only a #2 starter in the eyes of the people who think murphy is a MLB starting 1B.
The sad thing for the Mets is that I think the fans are becoming apathetic. We have blown 2 leads the past two years and speaking to Mets friends of mine we just want them to fade away and die so we aren’t put through more September misery.
I agree with Omar that what is being offered is not as good as his injured players. However, if they are out for the rest of the year, anything is better than nothing.
I have said it a million times lately, I don’t want the Mets making any desperation trades. Let it play out and start over next year (with a new GM and manager). The only trade I would go for would be for starting pitching (Halliday) as long as we sign him for additional years. Not a rental. That way we would have a solid 1-2 punch. Otherwise, let the season go, see if we can hang in there and make major off-season moves incuding the front office. It is time for a cultural change in Queens.
If Boston can sustain a high payroll while developing the minors, so can the Mets. I just don’t think Omar is the guy to do it because he always wants to make a splash and has given away the farm to do it.
Why the heck would you want to trade for a pitcher that will turn 33 next year and has logged over 2000 ip. Forget about Halladay. It would only kae sense to get him as the final piece for 2009, but he’s not a building block going forward.
