Pre Game: Mets vs. Dodgers (Game 1)
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 7, 2009 3:54 pm

Again, Fernando Tatis will be in tonight’s starting lineup, playing first base.

Luis Castillo will bat leadoff, followed in order by Alex Cora, David Wright, Gary Sheffield in right field, Tatis, Ryan Church in center field, Nick Evans in left, and Omir Santos behind the plate.

Mike Pelfrey will be tonight’s starting pitcher against the Dodgers, who haw Manny Ramirez batting third.

Update, 4:05 pm:

The Mets took infield practice this afternoon, and also worked on fielding pop ups.

Omar Minaya is scheduled to speak with reporters in the media room before today’s game.

Update, 4:30 pm:

Minaya described the climate for trades as one that will require him to “give up a lot,” because so many teams are still in contention.

He said he needs to keep an eye on 2010, 2011, and 2012, not just 2009, when trying to fill holes on his roster, noting there is no “magic bullet fix” available.

I’d scream about Tatis being in the lineup, but then again who would play for him? Murphy? He has been awful and seems lost at the plate.

I do know that anytime Tatis bats with first base occupied the DP is an all too frightening possibility.

    • Razor Shines says:

Yep. This post by Matt pretty much explains the last one.

      • shinjosplints17 says:

I wonder if Omar will be keeping a close eye on the team in a few years working in another organization??

  2. murdertron3000 says:

    All is forgien.

  3. Super King says:

Prediction: Reyes is going to reinjure his leg while rehabbing too soon, and we’ll lose him for the season.

We won’t see Beltran until late august, Delgado not at all.

Wagner will be the only one to come off the dl early, but he will be terrible, throwing 90mph meatballs.

    • Peter says:

      Ugly scenario . . . .

I agree about Delgado, thought he was gone for the year from jumpstreet.

Reyes? I can see that happening, although they’ve been gentle so far it seems.

Beltran? I have no idea. They messed that up big time it seems.

      Wags . . . I hope he doesn’t come back to just get whiplash . . .

    • ravi3 says:

I think Reyes is already done for the season…the torn hammy will require surgery, and has a 6 month recovery time…the only reason that they still have him doing drills and such is that it is only a partial tear. The only thing holding him back is the pain, which won’t subside until surgery. I’m guessing the Mets plan is to see if a) the cortisone will allow Reyes to play thru the pain and possibly return later in the year, or b) as a smoke screen to at least give Omar something to stand on during trade talks…as it is, he has very little leverage
with all of the injuries, but if they announce Reyes is done for the year, then he’ll be even worse off.

I will say that I thought we’d see some guys return sooner, but I guess not. The fact that Beltran still feels pain concerns me.

      • Lorenzo23 says:

He didn’t tear his hamstring. He tore his hamstring tendon which is different and less dramatic.

      • Mets5rocks says:

ravi,……Reyes has a slightly torn hamstring TENDON, the hamstring muscle itself is alledgedly fine. This is a significantly less impairing injury, assuming they diagnosed it right. That said, the way things are going if we see him at all the rest of the season I’d be shocked! The fact that he still needed a cortizone shot to even consider running at full speed is not a good sign!

  4. Andrew says:

    I forgie you.

  5. Patrick says:

If Reyes needs a cortisone shot just to TRY to run, shut him down, he is done for the year, what are we missing here?

    • starz31 says:

yea, why does he need the shot? to help speed up his recovery? that does not sound healthy.

  6. NYCESQ says:

Someone tell Minaya that the “magic bullet,” is a blender sold late at night. What we need is a “miracle.”

  7. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

I appreciate the update, but am still concerned.

Why does Reyes need a shot? Has he even been running?

What caused the Reyes and Beltran injuries? What is a specific act or is it due to a degenerative condition (especially in the case of Beltran)?

  8. Kendog52282 says:

Do they expect Putz back before Delgado?

  9. steadyeddie says:

    Where’s the grit?

    • starz31 says:

the players are currently taking “Grit” classes in Port St. Lucie. The team injured them on purpose and kept them on the DL so that they can work hard and learn said “grit”

  10. Xavier22 says:

I’m glad Omar is thinking about 2010 and beyond, but in that case, why not consider Alex Rios? He’s young, can spray the ball over the field, good D and is under contract for 4 years. If the Jays are really willing to trade him for a bag of balls, then why not?

    • wright5murph28 says:

ive already read from alot of beat writers that omar doesnt really want to take on another bad contract…and also rios is ridiculous…its like 13 or 15 mil a season for an average to slightly above average OFer…u already have one of those in church..and hes only making like 3 mil…

      • methead says:

I agree with you Wright. Toronto would have to suck up some money. Thats a bad contract. Then again, watch us not make the deal and he turn into a .300 30 hr 100 rbi guy. why? Thats the mets. hahahaha

      • Xavier22 says:

OK then, so where do you stand on Holliday?

        Holliday: .276/.374/.418 – 8HR
        Rios: .264/.320/.424 – 10HR

and Rios is a year younger and will cost much less (both in years and $) as a) Bora$ is Holliday’s agent and b) both the Yanks and the Red Sox will be in the hunt.

    • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

no thanks on rios his production can be found for less or you could get a lot more for 15 mill a year. Everyone should say a prayer that the Tampa Rays decide not to pick up Carl Crawfords option after this season.

      • KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

Dream on, Crawford will play the OF and lead off for the Yankees next season. Mark my word (assuming his option is not picked up).

        • Lorenzo23 says:

Wow you beat me to it… I was going to say the Yankees or Red Sox. We all know the Wilpons don’t outbit either team

          • Xavier22 says:

Be fair – the Wilpons outbid the Yankees for Beltran.

            • Xavier22 says:

And they also outbid the Yankees for Dice K – and came pretty close to the Red Sox offer.

              • Lorenzo23 says:

They didn’t outbid the Yankees for Beltran. Beltran made an offer to the Yankees to play for them for $19 million less. Pretty embarrassing huh?

And as for Dice K according to reports we outbid the Yankees but still didnt out bid the Red Sox and that was a blind bid. I’m talking about free agents…

          • methead says:

If the Yankees want Crawford, they are going to get him and that has nothing to do with the Wilpons. The Yankees will trump whatever we offer.

          • Hit The Weights Zeile says:

well if the red sox go after him that means theyre not resigning bay so whatever Ill take him. And as Xavier said we have outbid the yankees before. And everyone forgets the mets have a TON of money coming off the books this year and we know the wilpons like creating the illusion they are raising payroll by spending freed up money like they did after 2004.

            • Lorenzo23 says:

When have we out bid the Yankees??? Beltran made the Yankees an offer to play for them that was less than ours. The Yankees neverr made him a formal offer.. if they did he woudl be a yankee

      • ExileInLA says:

The option’s a no-brainer — if nothing else, to tradehim.

    • Lorenzo23 says:

Hopefully if we are lucky Omar won’t be here in 2010.

      • Mets5rocks says:

As you can see from the way the past 3 seasons have gone,……………WE AREN’T THAT LUCKY! LOL

    • ExileInLA says:

Rios for Perez & Castillo, maybe? $$ are about equal in 2010-2011 (so we may have to pay some), but it saves TOR the last 2 years. If Ollie makes a credible return for 2 months, he’s also marketable by TOR on a flip.

It would be a November trade, though — we don’t have a replacement for Castillo now, but in November we could make a run at O.Hudson. That gives us Rios-Beltran-Martinez with Church as a 4th OF in 2010. Also, look at the AAA/AA rosters: other than F-Mart, is there anyone there who you see in the CitiField OF in 2011?

Next year is a weak FA group (Hinske, N. Johnson & Adam LaRoche are the best 1Bs not named Delgado; assuming Manny stays with LAD, Holliday & Jason Bay are the top OFs). So, any immediate help may have to come from trades — and O.Hudson may be the best overall player out there. But I think we can compete with a lineup of Reyes-Evans/Murphy (1B)-Hudson-Beltran-Wright-Rios-FMart-Santos/Schneider, and a bench of Church, Cora and Reed.

      • Lorenzo23 says:

If you are going to send Castillo and Perez to the Blue Jays make it a block buster. Give them some of our top prospects also and bring back Halladay and Rios. That would be nice and solve to huge problems of ours. Pitching, Offense, and Defense.

Problem is the Jays are trying to cut salary not take on bad contracts – Castillo and Perez.

  11. starz31 says:

Who is this Omar Minaya? and what have you done with the medical staff?

thats a lot of information that is really nice to hear finally.

  12. Sylow59 says:

good point on overpaying: we don’t want another Ollie / Castillo.

  13. Lorenzo23 says:

I just heard Minaya say there are no guys on the trade market that are better than and could replace a short stop, centerfielder, and 1st baseman.

Is his kidding me???? Met fans aren’t asking to replace Reyes, Delgado, and Beltran at there respective positions! We are looking for a corner outfield bat or someone that can play first and move to the outfield if Delgado comes back. We need someone to carry the load until our guys come back. Especially now that you said Reyes might not come back, Beltran hasnt even started rehabbing, and Delgado is hitting tee-balls.

    Omar doesn’t have a clue I’m sorry…

    • Mets5rocks says:

Do you know how many teams are currently seeking an outfield bat????? There are 3 in our division alone! There just aren’t that many out there right now.

      • Lorenzo23 says:

Who are the three in our division?? Braves just got themselves an outfielder. Phillies aren’t looking for offense. That leaves the Nationals and Marlins. Nationals definitely aren’t and the Marlins can’t afford one.

There aren’t three in our division??? Omar is full of sh*t

        • Mets5rocks says:

Braves are still looking for an outfield bat depite picking up Mclouth. The Nationals have a glut of average OF, and would like one with a strong bat and even stronger defense. As as you mentioned the Mets are looking as well albeit for a 1b / outfielder type bat. MY point is that we are certainly not alone in the pursuit of an outfield bat and certain NOT the team who is in the best position to make a trade at this point. You might as well stop holding your breath for a trade, because a meaningful trade is not happening in ‘09 the way things are now, and as much as I would like to see some help for this team I don’t expect the conditions for a trade to improve anytime soon.

          • Lorenzo23 says:

I realized the Mets aren’t making a trade because Omar sucks (Ps Castillo just made a throwing error…garbage play continues..) and is delilusional.

As for the Nationals they are not trying to add another outfielder, they are actually trying to cut payroll.

  14. McNulty says:

How about this trade? David Wright for Roy Halladay and Alex Rios?

The Blue Jays do if they feel that cannot sign Halladay in 2010 and to cut some salary with Rios’ contract. They also do it to get a young marketable player that will attract the 14 and 15 year old fanbase. They also get a player that is good with the media and will bring some attention to the franchise.

The Mets do it because they get the best two pitchers in baseball. They get a RF that can cover some ground in Citi Field.

    • Mets5rocks says:

You don’t trade an impact third baseman (not too mention the face of the franchise) for A
) a pitcher who plays every 5 days, and B) Without having a darn good replacement at 3rd base offensively and defensively. (which we don’t have) That said, I still don’t think the Jays would take one player for an Ace much less another player thrown in, I don’t care who he is!

  15. nyj0126 says:

It really doesn’t matter who the Mets are playing. It feels like if we give up a run to start the game, there’s like a 95% chance we’ll lose. And if we take a lead to start out, like 50%/50% at best. It’s like you have to root for bad things not to happen to this team rather than good things actually happen. All we can hope for is the Phillies to struggle too. This team won’t remain within 4 or 5 games of the division without at least 2 of Beltran, Reyes and Maine back after these six games.

  16. nyj0126 says:

If we’re like 7 games below .500 when the deadline comes around and like 6 games out of first place, it makes no sense to cost our future on impatience. That’s how we lost Jason Bay in ‘02. That’s how we lost Scott Kazmir in ‘04. Just hope for these guy’s to get back. When the NL Wild Card is ahead of the NL East leader, you know you’re in a weak enough division for anything to be possible.

  17. SantanaCYYOung says:

    game over

  18. kd bart says:

You can already envision the 4 hit shutout. Will probably have only one legitimate scoring opportunity all game.

    • ericloz says:

      You must be psychic…

Either that or you’ve been watching every game the past 6 weeks, and had a Sherlock moment.

      This team is pitiful.

  19. jimyager says:

GAME OVER !! It’s only the third inning, we are down 3-0 and I switch off the game! This really sucks that I have zero faith in the team to come back :{ Whats worse is the Phillies are ahead and IF the Braves win we will be in fourth place 5.5 games out. WE ARE DOOMED. We wont have to worry about what happens after the ASG, we will be out of it by then. I am disgusted and angry with this team.

  20. kd bart says:

To illustrate the vast difference in offensive talent between the two lineups. Matt Kemp, who is batting 8th for the Dodgers tonight, would probably be batting fifth for the Mets.

  21. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

gotta love that brand new david wright all arms swing.

  22. nyj0126 says:

I’ll be suprised if the Mets have even one run by the 8th inning. This is sad. Kershaw may be good, but Blanton and Pineiro really weren’t. Maybe the pitchers and when the hitters are out in the field are so hopeless about the offense it takes motivation away in the field.

  23. nyj0126 says:

The shut out is all too predictable. I could make a bet and win easy on it.

  24. nyj0126 says:

At least the Reds scored a couple. At this point, I’m actually rooting for the Marlins since we’re so hopeless and I hate the Phillies.

  25. nyj0126 says:

Smart play by Furcal. No Met player would be a smart enough base runner to do that…

  26. nyj0126 says:

In fact, some ”pretty boys” on our shelf are too scared of sliding period.

  27. kd bart says:

If this team does not get a good starting performance, it has no chance to win.

  28. thedude says:

When can we stop with the fiction that Mike Pelfrey is a big-time pitcher?

The season is over b/c of injuries obviously, but how can any team with championship aspirations have this guy as a No. 2 starter?

  29. SantanaCYYOung says:

want to know what’s the best thing that can happen to the mets?

that they get embarassed from here to the all star break and be out of the picture for the playoffs.

maybe then maybe we can start to unload some of these players and just get ready for next year.

i mean there are players here that other teams want, right?

  30. SantanaCYYOung says:

i am so glad that i didn’t get any season tickets or ticket plans for this season

  31. thedude says:

That’s another thing I hate about Minaya, the way he talks down to fans and makes the most obvious statements seem like this wisdom he is gracing us with.

You have to think about the future? We had no idea.

  32. kd bart says:

The 3-6 spots in the Met lineup are 1 for 37 since Saturday. The only hit. A single by the six hitter, Reed, on Sunday. 3-5 are 0 for 28 and haven’t had a hit since Friday.

  33. kd bart says:

It’s at the point where a pitcher doesn’t even break a sweat against this lineup. Micah Owings would be an upgrade over most of these guys.

  34. fortleemets says:

When was the last time Jerry put on a hit-and-run? When the Mets get a guy on base, you have to make something happen. Jerry is a pawn and is trying not be scrutinized by the media.

  35. ericloz says:

Go Redding, we got our long reliever.

    LGM, LGM, LGM…

  36. SantanaCYYOung says:

u can see it in their faces at how frustrated they are

  37. SantanaCYYOung says:

when was the last time a met hit a homer in citfield?

or the last hr hit by a met

  38. thedude says:

Good to see Frank Isola pitching for the Mets

  39. jimyager says:

What really bothers me the most is the fact that after the Dodgers scored 3 runs, I felt that the game was over. I hate that feeling, I want to feel like I did in 2006, again. DOOMED we are DOOMED. Omar, just keep your eye on 2010-2013, because we aint donig anything in the near future. What happens when 2013 arrives and we still have done nothing?

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

since late ‘07 i’ve felt that the mets are done when trailing by 3

  40. nyj0126 says:

Back in like the 4th inning I said the Mets wouldn’t have a run by the 8th and I should have put money on it lol I really should have… I said we’d have to hope for the other guys to not win. Lidge just gave the lead to the Reds. Hopefully Cincy can hold on.

  41. fortleemets says:

I hope everyone realizes that the Mets will not be making a big pick-up, but will be unloading players to get talent once they realize that the season is lost. Don’t be surprised if Church, Castillo, Pelfrey or even Wright are traded within the next month to a contender.

    • thedude says:

There is not a chance in the world the Mets trade Wright. Pelfrey’s not going anywhere either and there’s not a GM dumb enough to take Castillo (since Omar can’t make trades with himself).

  42. kd bart says:

I have a feeling the Mets might score a run by Friday.

  43. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

The sad thing even if we tumbled bad and are clearly out by allstar break, our biggest chips (i.e. Putz and Wagner and Delgado) will not be off DL until AFTER the dead line.

And recall the Putz trade was a win – now move. The plan was to use Putz in 2009 and then not exercise his option in 2010. That is a win-now mentality. Who did we give up? All for nothing. Sure, this is monday morning quarter backing. I am not criticizing. Just stating a fact that the Putz move was a win-now move. Omar gambled and lost.

  44. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

This is scary ugly right now.

You can see it in their faces!!

I have not seen a Mets look like that since Alay Soler got bombed at Yankee stadium and was never seen again.

That time it was one guy. Today, I see that look on all the players. This is crazy.

    • SantanaCYYOung says:

i see it too, they know that if the other team scores a run its over!

i’ve been saying it for a couple of weeks — the mets must be sellers of:

schneider, cora, church, sheffield, tatis, castillo (if u can),

see what u can get for feliciano and greene and if its real good then do it.

its officially time to start thinking about next year because NONE of the core players are coming back until mid-August

      • Chiefman says:

I agree we should try and move as many of those guys as possible, We are completely done.

  45. steadyeddie says:

Mr. Met is on the mat and the ref is counting…

  46. Mets5rocks says:

Sadly, I dindn’t give a second thought about leaving the house at 6:45 p.m. and clearly I didn’t miss anything! Stick a fork in us we are done, done, done, for the ‘09 season!

  47. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

    We stink!
