Pelfrey is a head case and just not a very intelligent pitcher...I would trade him in a heartbeat if we got any value for him...

There is no way he is going to Philly. They cannot afford him. He is going to demand a new contract as a condition of his trade and there is no way the Phils are going to offer a 32 year old pitcher Santana/Sabbathia money. If they did it would pretty much guarantee Howard is gone next year. Even with shedding Howard's $15 mil they still couldnt afford him. They would have to trade Utley or Rollins too

Which is why you would propose it to him instead of forcing him to make the move. I do not think he would go for it through as he looked pretty uncomfortable in the infield the few times he was brought in to play 5 infielder. Guy probably never played anything other than CF.

Well, the whole point of asking him first is to make sure he's happy with a move. So I wouldn't consider it unless he's fully on board. Assuming he is, then you don't have an unhappy Beltran to deal with. He may look at it as prolonging his career. Look at what happened to Bernie Williams when he could no longer play CF or even LF and RF.

They should consider it. If they leave him in CF and we just see a lot more DL stints in the future, the club is gong to suffer again. Who knows? He might be good defensively there. He's a good natural athlete to begin with so that helps. You never know if you don't try.

Seemed like a good idea when they signed him to the deal but he has just dropped off the Earth

Frankly it does'nt matter if Beltran likes the move or not! Likewise with his agent, the most Beltran could do about it is request a trade that he knows full well isn't likely to happen given the size of his contract. That said, I don't think it's in the best interest of the Mets to put him at first base as he will likely struggle there defensively as well as being unhappy at the position. Alot of people seem to think that first base is the catch all for aging players. But frankly 1B is alot harder to play than one might imagine. It's not just sticking you glove out when the ball is thrown. There is footwork, and hops, bounces, timing, double plays and the like that very few career outfielders could perform well. Combine that with an unhappy gold glove CF and that offensive production is likely to suffer, which defeats the purpose entirely!

The Mets don't have the chips to trade for anyone who would help right now, not unless they completely unload the farm system which is not happening. The only thing they can do is take on a bad contract, like a Rios, but don't know how much that would help. There biggest chip IMO is Putz, if he comes back and is back to form the mets and pick up the option (which they should do regardless IMO) and trade him as a top end closer. Say to Tampa Bay.
