Update, 10:17 am, by Matthew Cerrone:
…i like the shot of David Wright, pledging the flag during the National Anthem, and i can’t help but wonder what he’s thinking about…
…i also think it’s funny that Bobby Parnell is still be hazed with the rookie back-pack, despite this being his second year on the roster… i guess, technically, he is still a rookie…
…also, great shots of these guys working in the dugout, as well as Sandy Alomar checking his cell phone in the tunnel… classic…
…great work, as usual, michael…

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, the Mets turned down trading Bobby Parnell for OF Scott Hairston, who the Padres eventually sent to the A’s for two minor-league pitchers.
The 28–year-old Hairston hit .299 with 10 HR and 14 doubles in 197 at bats for San Diego this season.
Hairston is arbitration eligible through 2011, after which he can be a free agent.
Rosenthal also reports on the market for Braves RHP Javier Vazquez and Royals infielder Mark Teahen; and whether the Indians will trade OF Matt LaPorta for a top pitching prospect.

In an interview with the Washington Post, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo said, “We are not trading Adam Dunn. That’s as definitive as I can be.”
…you mean, it isn’t as simple as just ‘going and getting dunn,’ like i keep hearing from radio hosts and columnists, as if dunn is just sitting on a street corner with his bag packed waiting for a ride north… heh, imagine that…
…i said it a few weeks ago, but it never really made sense to me why the Nationals would trade dunn, unless it was an offer they couldn’t refuse… as much as he is what the Mets need, he’s also very much what the Nationals need, and they have him, already, and under contract for one more year…
“The Mets have been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since May 24-25, 2005 at Atlanta, and they have tied a team record by playing three consecutive games without an extra-base hit,” according to the Elias Sports Bureau, courtesy of ESPN.com.
… i’m getting too used to watching this lineup, and it’s not until i see a team like the Dodgers, clicking, with Orlando Hudson, Manny Ramirez, James Loney, etc., that i realize, ‘oh, right,’ and suddenly what elias is saying makes sense again…
In a post to their Twitter page, Stats.com writes, “Since Carlos Beltran landed on the DL on June 22, the Mets have gone 5-10 with a .229 batting average and have been shut out 4 times.”
…i keep hearing people say, ‘Well, they’re still around .500 and only four games back,’ etc., but, that takes in to account April and May… however, they’re just 6–14 in their last 20 games, and i’ve seen very little over that time to suggest this group of players can be any better than that… and so, sure, while the overall record may be around .500, if the current team from the last three weeks delivers a similar performance over the next three weeks, the overall record, say, 46–55 at that point, and, say, eight games back of first, will make it very difficult to rebound from, with or without the supposed cavalry…
Mets manager Jerry Manuel talked to reporters after last night’s loss to the Dodgers, and had the following to say regarding:
Mike Pelfrey, who allowed five runs, eight hits and three walks in just three innings pitched:
“Well, he just didn’t have the command that he’s able to have for a period of time. The command just wasn’t there for him. He struggled with the command of the fastball, and the other things couldn’t quite get in sync.”
…so, you’re saying it’s the command…
…or, in other words, pelfrey stunk… it happens…
The lack of offense, and inability to string together hits:
“Well, it’s difficult right now because, you know, we’re struggling as a whole… What’s happened to us is, we begin to look at, ‘What if,’ but that still doesn’t mean that ‘if’ could struggle as a whole. We need to battle through this… When you don’t hit, and you’re hitting all singles, it makes your team look lethargic and that’s what we look at.”
Is he running out of ways to get his team out of this funk:
“I think what we have to do it starts one inning at a time, and try to put together, as best we can, quality at bats. For the most part, everyone has gotten the opportunity to play and so everybody should be able to compete at this level. It’s almost like a team funk, it’s not just one guy, it’s a team funk, and hopefully sooner than later we’ll come out of it as a team, and that’s kind of my hope at this point.”
…well, he’s right about everyone playing… jeez, that’s an understatement… frankly, i’m surprised you and i have not been given an at bat…
The difference between the Mets and Dodgers:
The way we’re playing and performing now there is definitely a difference, no question about that. Do I think we are capable of playing that style of baseball? Yes, I think we’re capable. The No. 1 thing we have to get on a consistent basis is good starting pitching. Good starting pitching and good defense can level the playing field, and so that’s what we’ve got to do.”
…i hear ya, jerry, but you’ve been saying that for three weeks…
