Quote: Wright says Mets Stink
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 8, 2009 12:20 pm

Following last night’s loss to the Dodgers, David Wright said, according to the Daily News:

“I just think we stink right now, we’re just not very good… When you don’t pitch, you don’t hit, you don’t play defense, you’re not going to win very many games.  We’re not playing very good baseball… I don’t think anybody’s having very much fun right now.”

well, the 39,000 people in Citi Field last night would probably agree, because i know we’re not having a ton of fun either

The headline to Ken Davidoff’s column for Newsday today reads, “Maybe they should call it Piti Field.”

According to Davidoff, “Citi Field has turned into the world’s largest dentist’s office. The patrons have grown so numb to the pain, they barely acknowledge it.”

…he’s right… it was a strange and depressing crowd last night…i shudder to say this, but the crowd last night reminded me of the low, disinterested energy from the mid-90s…

Wright spoke out of sheer frustration, i’m sure he is equally upset at himself than at anyone else, and of course the fact that he is the face of the franchise and in a slump right now is not helping his mood at all.

He has always been a glass half full kind of guy, and for him to make those kind of statements, you know he is completely frustrated.

I was in the crowd last night and you’re right, we were pretty disinterested. But they were playing lousy baseball. Pelfrey couldn’t throw strikes after the first inning and gave up 3 runs by the 2nd – and threw 90 pitches by the 4th! The defense stunk and the offense was atrocious. The highlight of the game was Manny getting ejected.

Hard to get pumped up when the Mets played so poorly. The offensive brownout is somewhat understandable, but the stink at the basic fundamentals too. It’s like they’re giving the opposing team a couple extra outs each inning.

Last night was the least interested ive ever been at a game…left after 3. not sure why im going back tonight

I guess it’s time for Citi field to lower the beer prices. 50% off for half a team should about do it. It will cheer the crowd up, but might not take the strange part out of the equation.

Oh yes, Matt, this era is beginning to look a lot like 1989 to 1995 — without the success of 1984-1988 before it, unfortunately. And right now is mid-1991.

After a couple of second place finishes in 1989 and 1990, injuries to Doc, Carter and Keith and Straw going to alcohol rehab were the beginning of the end in 1991 when they finished in 5th place.

July of ‘91 they were also 4.5 games out (tho the division was better and they were well over .500)… but the injuries hit them late, and they lost 18 of 20 in August to fall 13 games out. They didn’t recover until Bobby V in 1997.

    That’s 2015.

Past performance is no indication of future value.

The Mets stink right now, but let’s not go nuts. They are perfectly capable of turning it around in the offseason if the Wilpons are willing to do what is necessary to put a competitive team on the field in 2010.

Most of the pieces of there; it’s a matter of trimming some fat, gettting a more motivational manager and filling some holes.

Yeah, a team with a core of Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Johan, K-Rod is not going to be terrible.

I don’t necessarily have faith in Minaya to make the right moves to put the team over the top, but they’ll be competitive. Probably just enough to break our hearts in the end.

The good news is right now 21 teams have a better record than the Mets. If they end the season that way, they can sign a Type A free agent (cough, Hudson, cough) and not lose a 1st-round pick since the Top 15 picks are protected.

  5. MetsRmilife says:

Last night was the first time I have left a game early since I have been going without a parent (14 yrs). I always whined and cried when my dad would head out in the 7th because he wanted to “beat traffic” or “get home early.” I vowed I would never do such a thing, but last night by the 6th I could not justify being there any longer. Not that I got home any faster thanks to construction on the Whitestone.

  6. starz31 says:

game is on national TV tonight…great way to showcase our talent for the nation

I just hope Oliver can get out of the 1rst without runs…ill take that as a success even if we lose.

  7. Horseman says:

Well David hit the nail on the head. The mets do stink. They play horrible, little league, baseball. What can any of us fans expect? But, do the owners and Minaya seriously think that fans are going to continue to go to the ballpark? I’m am guessing fans are only going because they already had tickets and don’t feel like wasting the cost. I was a ticket holder until this year, I feel I made a good decision not to renew my plan.

    • theCoop says:

Unfortunately for the fans who have season, mini and other plans, they already have our money. but I, for one, will refuse to spend ANY money at an establishment (like a METS Team Store) that sells merch for other teams (like the VISITING Team for this week).

      • JINBK says:

Ya they already have our ticket money, I bought the 15 game plan to go to opening day and hopefully playoff tickets. But I wouldn’t have missed opening day at the new park for anything (even if they couldn’t even win and give us fans that). So the playoffs won’t be happening. The Wilpons WILL notice when the stadium is half empty by mid August, their concession sales are down by half, their SNY ad revenue is falling quickly, and they’ll realize without an overhaul their preseason ticket sales will be down dramatically next season also, when with the new stadium they should have no problem moving tickets. If this team can’t even get back to respectable professional baseball they will do something about it, for no other reason than their bottom line will really suffer.

  8. havery says:

Citi Field will be half full by September this year

    • starz31 says:

maybe we’ll have our best September ever, and still fall short…oh the irony.

  9. Hit The Weights Zeile says:

Look at this season as a blessing in disguise guys. Its the only way to sleep at night. If the Mets continue playing like this 2 things will happen. First and foremost Omar Jerry and hopefully every other coach/FO personal will be fired. And second, the Mets will finish with a bad enough record to get a top 15 draft pick which by rule can not be forfeited by signing TYPE A free agents. Thus giving the new regime the chance to sign whomever they want with the money coming off the books (possibly even getting some compensation picks from guys who will be leaving) and most importantly they will have a nice amount of early draft picks to rebuild the farm system Omar was never able to get off the ground.

  10. Old Backstop says:

I was at the game last night, with my 6 year old daughter (I have a 15-game plan).

It was brutal. First I had to pay $20 to park, tolls to drive in (plus gas), and then you get whacked with the high prices on food and drink. All of that is OK, if you are going to see a quality product.

Once it became 3-0 early in the game, I already knew the game was over, and it was time to start walking the stadium and looking for treats my daughter may want to eat. We settled on kettle corn (which was great), and we actually spent a fair amount of time in some of the shops looking at random things like hats or rice crispie treats.

Every once in a while I heard a loud moan from the crowd, only to look around and find a TV to see a replay of something like Castillo being thrown out at third base. At that point, you numbly shrug and go back to the non-baseball-watching thing you had originally been doing.

The only fun I had last night was watching my 6 year old daughter laugh as she ran the bases on the whiffle ball field. What I saw on the field was disturbing, and the lineup made me grimace when it was initially announced.

If it seemed like Reyes, Beltran and Delgado were close to returning, I would hold more optimism, but it almost seems like all of these guys are done for the season and the Mets are throwing out spin to make it sound like they are coming back just to salvage what they can in ticket sales, attendance and TV revenue.

    • Lorenzo23 says:

Old Backstop you are 100% correct. IT is all a marketing scam to fill the seats. Imagine how season tickets holders feel when we dont hear a word from ownership and Omar tells us yesterday he isn’t doing anything and are waiting for the core to come back (Not happening). Its not only unfair to season ticket holders but every other Met fan who watches and attends games especially after the last two seasons. It is insulting.

  11. Mingo says:

The sad thing is if you take away those that are injured or not on team anymore….
Reyes, Castro, Beltran, Delgado you have a total of 31 homeruns.
That is a weak lineup anyone can be pitched to.
