Mets manager Jerry Manuel talked to reporters after last night’s loss to the Dodgers, and had the following to say regarding:
Mike Pelfrey, who allowed five runs, eight hits and three walks in just three innings pitched:
“Well, he just didn’t have the command that he’s able to have for a period of time. The command just wasn’t there for him. He struggled with the command of the fastball, and the other things couldn’t quite get in sync.”
…so, you’re saying it’s the command…
…or, in other words, pelfrey stunk… it happens…
The lack of offense, and inability to string together hits:
“Well, it’s difficult right now because, you know, we’re struggling as a whole… What’s happened to us is, we begin to look at, ‘What if,’ but that still doesn’t mean that ‘if’ could struggle as a whole. We need to battle through this… When you don’t hit, and you’re hitting all singles, it makes your team look lethargic and that’s what we look at.”
Is he running out of ways to get his team out of this funk:
“I think what we have to do it starts one inning at a time, and try to put together, as best we can, quality at bats. For the most part, everyone has gotten the opportunity to play and so everybody should be able to compete at this level. It’s almost like a team funk, it’s not just one guy, it’s a team funk, and hopefully sooner than later we’ll come out of it as a team, and that’s kind of my hope at this point.”
…well, he’s right about everyone playing… jeez, that’s an understatement… frankly, i’m surprised you and i have not been given an at bat…
The difference between the Mets and Dodgers:
The way we’re playing and performing now there is definitely a difference, no question about that. Do I think we are capable of playing that style of baseball? Yes, I think we’re capable. The No. 1 thing we have to get on a consistent basis is good starting pitching. Good starting pitching and good defense can level the playing field, and so that’s what we’ve got to do.”
…i hear ya, jerry, but you’ve been saying that for three weeks…

The sad part is that Wright and Reyes are now going to be shuttled out of NY because Omar has built bad teams around them. Someone will have to be the scapegoat. Omar is horrible at player development. Pelfry sucks, Evans and Murphy will be career backups, Santos is a 28 year old rookie coming back to earth, and there is no other help in the system! It’s great to sign all these 16 year old supposed phenoms from the Latin countries, but it doesn’t do any good when they continuously fizzle out! Too bad the Wilpons gave that meathead a 4 year extension. What other team besides the Mets would give their GM, who just presided over 2 historic collapses, a four year extension! That is why this organization is such a joke! 2006 had the the look of a promising era on the horizon, only to collapse less than a year later. Unbelievable.
At least we won’t be sweating it in Sept and we can enjoy watching the other races…
I wouldn’t say Pelfrey sucks, I would say his defense sucks. He gets the ground balls that should be outs, but players like Castillo make errors, and players like Wright don’t rush throws when they should. Put Pelfrey on another team that actually makes plays in the field, and his ERA would be at least a full run better.
So Jerry, you are saying consistent good starting pitching (which we DO NOT have) will be our key. Thanks, so basically you are saying we are screwed.
I don’t see how that would matter. Sure, it would help to get good pitching, but if this team can’t score any runs, what’s the difference? Might as well lose 8-0 instead of 2-0.
Lets just be truthful. The team as currently constituted sucks. We are one of the 3 or 4 worse teams in the NL with the current roster. Now that is the truth.
It isn’t all Jerry’s fault, and he shouldn’t be fired over it, but he should probably go. I’d like to see Oberkfell get a shot at it. Seems like one of those steady guys who can operate without the schtick.
What stinks is that Pelfrey is a contact pitcher and needs to have good defense behind him to get outs and win games. You could make an argument that if Wright throws a little harder to get Kemp out, and Castillo doesn’t make that error, it might have been a successful outing. Pelfrey should try to go back to being a power pitcher to strike people out because with this atrocious defense behind him, he won’t have much of a chance.
I seems to be coming more and more clear that all these injuries are pretty serious, and the organization always knew they were, they just didn’t want ticket sales to drop. They are lying to the fans, and it will come back to haunt them. They are destroying the trust of the fans, and that ultimately destroys the fan base. I’m discusted with this oganization. I feel like I’ve been tricked into buying tickets in a bait and switch scheme.
Jerry The Clown and Omar the Great have to go..Today. not tomorrow not after the all star break not next season today…The Brooklyn Cyclones would have a better record and play with more heart then this pitiful squad.
Its not that this team they are putting out there now lacks heart….its just with the exception of 2 or 3 of them in the lineup…they lack major league ability..
not a big jerry fan, but it really isn’t his fault this team went into the season with a crappy plan A and no plan B yet now we’re down to plan D or worse.
