News: Pedro Martinez may have signed with Phillies
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 9, 2009 5:06 pm

According to Candela Deportiva, free agent RHP Pedro Martinez has signed a one-year, $4 million deal with the Phillies.

now that this is out there, it usually only takes a matter of time for the likes of Ken Rosenthal, Buster Olney, Jon Heyman, etc., to either confirm or deny the report…

…but, from what i can gather, the Phillies are dishing out no comments, suggesting there might be truth to this, and they’re just waiting to make an announcement

Update, 5:10 pm:

In a post to his Twitter, MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki writes Phillies GM Ruben Amaro declined to comment when asked about the report in Candela Deportiva.

Update, 5:45 pm:

In a post to Twitter, SI.com’s Jon Heyman said he has heard Martinez is in serious negotiations with the Phillies, but he cannot confirm the Candela Deportiva that a deal is done.

Update, 6:47 pm:

According to Heyman, who talked to Martinez’s agent, Martinez will have final decision by Sunday.

Update, 6:50 pm:

by the way, the buzz from people who are connected to martinez say the any deal is likely to be around $1.75 million, which sounds like $4 million pro-rated over two or three months...

...frankly, i still think i’d rather Jon Niese

Update, 8:47 pm:

Martinez has agreed to throw for the Phillies for a second time, ‘to see how his arm responds,’ reports Jayson Stark on ESPN.com.

According to the report, “Amaro denied reports a deal was done, but confirmed the team’s interest in the three-time AL Cy Young Award winner.”

if this means they wont be trading for halladay then NICE!

    • NYCESQ says:

      Actually, they needed two pitchers.

    • zer09 says:

Was Holladay ever a real option for them? All this talk about them NOT being able to add much salary, besides that they’ll have a bunch of raises and guys to resign in the offseason – why would they trade away top 3 of their prospects? I think with the Mets playing the way they are now, and everyone pretty much in agreement that the season’s a wash for the Mets, I’d rather have the Phils get Halladay, lose a few free agents because they don’t have the budget, and lose the prospects they’re going to give away for Halladay. Seems like a good deal for the Mets.

As for Pedro, I don’t mind him going to Philly. If he ever makes it onto the mount, he’ll be hit harder than Glavine did in Atlanta. Pedro’s done, we all knew that 2 years ago.

      • ravin108 says:

even if he pitches well, he’s not much more than a 5 inning pitcher anyway.

      • BullpenHelp says:

There really hasn’t been talk about the Phils not being able to add salary. On the contrary, it’s been reported that the Phils are one of a few teams willing to add salary to get a frontline starter (i.e. Halladay). Doesn’t mean they will get him, but an additional $7M this year isn’t out of the question.

        • zer09 says:

99% of the time this team tries to shed salary, not add it. The guys is due $16m next season, I doubt the Phils really want to pay that.

      • dave27 says:

As bad as Glavine was last season, he totally shut down the Mets the only time we saw him. And we missed the playoffs by one game of course.

Somewhere, this will come back to bite us. I am still not sure why in the name of Fernando Nieve and Tim Redding we wouldn’t even consider the guy. I know he may have very little left, but you never count out guys like Pedro Martinez.

        • zer09 says:

Well, essentially it doesn’t matter who pitches – they’ll shut down the Mets anyway. And the reason is simple – there are cheaper options out there that can sit on the DL or pitch just as bad as Pedro.

        • sheaday says:

          Dave27,

Of course as I am an amatuer arm chair GM, the Mets should have signed Pedro. I had said to my pals that sign sign him as a preemptive strike againsdt one of our competitors. If Pedro gives one good start to a team and the Phillies win the division by one game, money well spent. I just sooo frustrated…..I am tired of Jerry managing this team with a little league mentality. Let Murphy ride the wave of his stellar night! This isnt little league and players dont “need” at bats. Such A joke……..

          • sheaday says:

sorry for the poor grammar and spelling…the fumes out of my brain were too fast for my slow, fat fingers.

  2. Lorenzo23 says:

Who cares – there is a reason why the other 12 teams that looked at him a month ago didn’t sign him.. He is donzoooo…

    Well I hope so lol

  3. HAHAHAHAHAH! Now he’s their problem…

    • Mets5rocks says:

Amen to that, although I wonder about the truth on the money as he was asking 5 million at the beginningof the season, why then would they give Pedro a 4 million deal for half a season?? Unless they have another injury to one of their pitchers we don’t know about yet.

      • cb32 says:

I believe they pro-rate it but it is announced as annual salary. So it is really $2MM for the second half.

  4. carmine_riccardi says:

Charlie manuel has vocally been against losing Drabek, but they have three other guy’s in BA’s top 50 so I think the Phils still have a shot at Halladay if Amaro has the stones to roll the dice. Myers is done for the season right?

  5. steadyeddie says:

I’ve always liked Pedro’s spirit and talent.
That being said, I cannot wish him great success with our dreaded enemy, the Girl Horses.
Sorry, Pedro. No vote from me!

    • Mets5rocks says:

Pedro got shelled before sporting an 88-91 mph fastball and if that’s all he’s got he will be shelled again!

      • zer09 says:

IF Pedro can throw a 91 mph fastball consistently, with his change up, he’ll do wonders. BUT I think it’s safe to say that since he hasn’t been playing for almost a whole year now (or is it more?), he’s most likely not going to throw that hard consistently. AND I think it’s safe to say with Pedro’s history that he probably won’t make more than 2-3 starts before spraining a toe or jamming a pinky…

  6. Mets5rocks says:

Per Mlb Trade Rumors: Phils are in serious talks with Pedro, but they have not signed him yet and Ruben Amaro would not disclose whether or not they had reached a TA or scheduled a physical for Pedro.

  7. nyj0126 says:

I actually encourage them to sign Pedro because all of us know how much Pedro sucks. If every other team refused him, you get the picture. I don’t think he’d do well in a pitcher’s park. For what it’s worth though, I trust nothing with Deportiva in it. It’s unreliable. Charlie Manuel didn’t sound ethused about Pedro either.

  8. nyj0126 says:

Besides Billy Wagner, this would be the next most significant guy who crossed to the other side.

  9. bvaz says:

you’d think the Phils would go with someone from the minors instead of Pedro. Pedro can’t be their best option.

It wouldn’t bother me a bit to see Pedro in a Phillies uniform. He’s just not that good anymore.

    • mark4212 says:

You would think. They have 3 prospects in the Baseball America top 25, 2 of them pitchers and another in the top 50 that’s a pitcher. None of those are their favorite Carrasco, who i’ve heard about for 3 years now and keeps getting passed over, and isn’t even performing that well in AAA. But he is only 22.

I’m happy to see them waste their time with pedro. But as others have said….. He will shut out the mets, i mean chan ho park did, Rodrogio Lopez did, why wouldn’t pedro?

  10. dave27 says:

What the Phillies do from here on out is as relevant to the Mets as what the Mariners do.

It’s over. This is the most talentless, lifeless Mets roster I’ve ever seen. Ever. Even the 92-93 and 02-03 teams had on-paper talent.

This team has nothing and Omar is going to rest on his 3-year extension and do nothing about it. By time the first of Delgado, Reyes, or Beltran is back this team will be a minimum of 12 games back. Mark it down.

  11. itsmetsforme says:

My first thought was this is the first good thing that happened to the Mets all year.

Then of course I realized what Jamie Moyer or Raul Ibanez have done to the Mets once they are wearing Philadelphia’s dirty laundry and the smirk left my face. Moyer and Pedro can fight the battle of who can pitch slower and more crafty. Then the Phils can sign Tom Gl*vine too. They’ll all baffle Mets hitters at some point im sure.

As some of you said, it’s hard to see how this matters anyway, since the mets are no longer really standing in the phullies way.
