Post Game: Dodgers 11 Mets 2
By Matthew Cerrone - Jul 9, 2009 10:35 pm

The Mets (40–44) lost to the Dodgers (53–31) by the score of 11 to 2 in Citi Field tonight.

For a recap and boxscore, click here.

The Least You Need to Know:

  • The Dodgers sent seven men to the plate in the first inning and scored four runs against Livan Hernandez before the Mets even stepped in to the batter’s box.
  • Gary Sheffield drove in a run with a single, while Ryan Church had an RBI on a fielder’s choice.
  • Tim Redding took on eight batters in the eighth inning, in relief of Brian Stokes, and allowed three runs to put the game out of reach.

Misc., Etc., and Other Observations:

  • David Wright must be starting his next 20–game hot streak, as he had hit .210 in the 21 games prior to yesterday, but is 4 for 7 in his last two games.
  • Andre Ethier looks like he could be related to Ron Darling.
  • Jeremy Reed, who is batting .294, and who had two hits last night, and is three for his last six, was kindly put in to play center field during the ninth inning.  How nice of you, Jerry.
  • The Mets got hosed on a play at second base, on which Alex Cora clearly tagged second base to beat Rafael Furcal, but Furcal was called safe, even though the ump was standing directly over the bag.  It would’ve ended the inning.  Naturally, Russell Martin then drove in two runs with a single.
  • Hernandez has allowed 15 runs and 22 hits in his last seven innings pitched, which is not good.  Wow.  He was leaving balls out over the plate, never pitching inside, and, to the Dodgers credit, they had a plan, showed patience, and drove the ball up the middle for base hits and RBIs.
  • I just don’t understand the constantly changing lineup, and I really wish Jerry would practice what he preaches, and play a consistent lineup, same positions every day, in the lineup and in the field, and try to build some momentum.  Ugh.  This Everyday is a New Adventure bit is wearing thin.
  • The Mets are 5.5 games out of first place, their low point of the season.  However, the All-Star break is just three days away.  Serenity Now!

In Case You Missed It:

The Mets begin a three-game series with the Reds tomorrow in Citi Field, with Fernando Nieve facing Bronson Arroyo at 7:10 pm.

And to top the evening off, we learned that Shane Pricktorino will be playing CF in the All-Star Game instead of our own Carlos Beltran.

The bottom line to this game was that Hernandez was horrible once again. He has now been horrible for about a month. It’s time we cut Hernandez loose and let Niese see what he can do up here on an extended basis, not this one start at a time thing that the team has done in the past. Let the youngster come up, get some starts under his belt, and see what he can give us. We need to evaluate the kid anyways to see if he could be considered a member of the rotation for the future. It cannot be any worse than what Hernandez has given us over the last month.

And Minaya should also cut bait with Redding as well, the guy can’t get anyone out.

    • Chiefman says:

Redding and Tatis…the DFA twins. But Omar will keep them around and Jerry will “try and get them going.”

  3. Chiefman says:

Impossible to feel good about us right now. Way too many problems. We are on our way to 4th place. Not trying to be a pessmist; this is the painful reality.

  4. JohnPacellasCap says:

The only thing that was keeping us treading water as the injuries piled up was surprising performances by Livan, Nieve, Santos, etc. Now that the bloom is off that rose, what we have left isn’t pretty. I know that we’re “just” 4 games below .500, but we’re a .400 ballclub and one of the worst teams in the league. There will be occasional nights like last night where we get a win but most nights are going to be unpleasant.

Unfortunately, injuries cannot explain or excuse our pitching. Putz had a bone spur when we acquired him. Maine was also injured last year and Ollie’s real injury is a case of the Dontrelle’s. There isn’t a cortisone injection to fix that. Time to get Niese up here to see what he can do.

And stop screwing around with Murphy. Let him play every day. Playing Tatis or Evans at first doesn’t give us any better chance to win. I don’t care if a lefty is pitching. It’s time to start figuring out whether Murphy can be our 1B next year or we have yet another hole we’ll need to fill in the offseason. We’re not buyers, we’re sellers and we need to get about the business of improving our roster for next year. The bad thing about that is Omar will still be making the decisions and I just don’t have faith in his decision making.

    Rant over.

I agree with you on everyone and everything except Nieve, although he has not been his stellar self of late the last 2 games he’s pitched in he did give the team a chance to win albeit a small chance with our offense.

  5. ditas says:

You know, I want to say that we should become sellers, but who do we have that can get the Mets anything in the market? I want to also say call up the youngsters and see what they can do, but other than giving Niese a chance in the rotation and leaving Murphy full time a first base, who else do the Mets have in their organization that can be called up right now? The answer to both questions is no one. Which right now I think puts us at being one of the worst organizations in baseball. Some of these perennial losers at least have young exciting players that they can call up and see what they have, the Mets have no one like that.

    • JohnPacellasCap says:

Man, I thought I was being a pessimist. Maybe I was a little too positive. LOL. Time to start drinking heavily.

  6. fortleemets says:

Jerry Manuel has absolutely no clue what he’s doing. He thinks that a manager’s job is to fill out a lineup card and then argue a call here or there. It’s not a coincidence that the Mets are 3rd in stolen bases but also first in double plays. One would think that makes no sense, but Jerry never puts men in motion when they’re supposed to be. He takes no risks because he scared of being criticized in the papers. You can go back and look at my posts from last year — Jerry was not a good choice. He doesn’t make things happen and doesn’t put any pressure on the pitchers.

  7. dave27 says:

Are you serious about whining about Jerry changing the lineup around on a night when it was 4-0 before they even came to bat?

Folks, it’s not going to get any better. Look at this rotation. Livan, as Gary and Ron correctly pointed out, is reverting right back to what he does after the first few months every year. Pelfrey is regressing like Ollie and Maine regressed last year. Redding is a colossal bust. Nieve pitched well enough to make teams bother watching some video and now he’s not fooling anyone. Ollie is still a mess and Maine may not pitch again this year. And yet it’s the Phillies scouring for starters. What do you think is going to change, even when the regulars are back? Remember, even healthy this team hasn;t shown any ability to come back in games for 3 years. You think when that lineup gets down 4-0 before betting it’s going to be any different?

Omar is sitting on his hands waiting for his flawed roster to reassemble. And when it does, its still flawed. But don’t worry, the teflon GM who has won nothing in his life will be here until 2013 at the least because the Wilpons won’t eat salary on anyone.

We got stuck behind the Braves for 10 years, now we can be stuck behind the biggest loser franchise in baseball for the next 5.

    • carmine_riccardi says:

summed up my feelings well in your 2nd paragraph… I just don’t see any way to be optimistic about the remainder of the season given our recent past, our lack of talent, and our lack of ammo on the farm. And to top it all off, hernandez has been on vacation… terrible week.

    • methead says:

There is nothing he can do. What do you want Omar to do, wave a majic wand and give us 2 hitters? Be realistic here, jeez. There are only a few legit bats available and they want the moon. So do we give them the moon? whats wrong with you people. LOL

      • jimyager says:

What wrong with “US PEOPLE”? We want this team to win, dont you? There will never be a better time. The Phillies are not that good, and, neither is the rest of the NL East. IF, Omar could get some help for this team, we could, win the Division. From there, I dont know. If OMAR sits on his hands, the season is over. I dont know who he can get, but, anything is better than what we have. He has to show the team and the fans that he is willing to do what it takes to help this team win. That is what’s wrong with us .

  8. dykstraw says:

matt’s getting sarcastic and pissed? the metpocalypse is nigh!

  9. methead says:

So, I can’t stand Jerry’s constantly changing lineup. WITH THAT SAID, no lineup would have helped today. Livan was awful again and never gave us a chance to win. Once down 4-0 it was impossible for this team to mount a comeback. Livan is acceptable as a 5th starter when we are at full health. But on this team, he is the worse pitcher to have. Sad part? I KNEW we were losing today and he would give up at least 6 runs.

Now, there are only a few games left. Hopefully we pick up 2 of them and come back from the allstar break with Reyes and Beltran. Then 2 weeks later delgado and so forth. We will know by August 15th if we should even bother hoping for a run.

    Lets go Mets!! hahahaha

  10. methead says:

Oh yeah by the way. We are 4.5 games out not 15. Its not over. Stop with the sky is falling. Remember the last 2 years? Flying high and then crash and burn? How about a little reverse this year? hahaha

  11. steadyeddie says:

Basically, we are missing 4 guys.
And while they are BIG guys,
is this a first place TEAM.
    even with those 4 guys?
    I think not…
Omar, don’t look for a seller.
    Be a seller!

    • jimyager says:

TRU DAT !! Even with Reyes, Beltran and Delgado, is this team that good? NO. The only good thing is the Phillies signed PEDRO. He will pitch the best game of his life against the METS, probably and perfect game, with our luck :} I keep saying that this team didnt have what it take in 2006, 07, or 08, what made us think that 09 would be different? We need NEW players at 1B, 2B, C, LF and RF, then we can think about winning.

  12. Constnza81 says:

Not that I think Omar needs any help getting himself fired after the past 2 seasons, but when I watch Manuel constantly change the line-up every night and then make sarcastic comments to the press about “this is what I have” and “this is the way we’re built,” I sometimes wonder if Jerry and Berenzard are in cahoots with each other in an effort to sabotage Omar and enhance both their careers. Considering the buzz after Willie was fired was that Jerry and Berenzard plotted together on that – who knows? It would be fitting.

PS – anyone who thinks Berenzard would do better than Omar because he emphasizes the farm system is nuts. This farm system is a mess in large part because of Tony’s (lack of) development program. It mirrors the major league team perfectly – let’s push a small group of “elite” guys to the moon while sitting back and hoping an occasional role player can pop out. All Berenzard is trying to do is create superstars – yet by accelerating guys like Martinez, Niese, Holt, Pena, and others through the system, all he’s managed to create so far is hype and disappointment and not a single secondary player who can serve a role on this roster currently.

  13. jimyager says:

At the rate we are playing the BEST we can hope for is to win 1 game in each series, unless we play the NATS, then we may win 2. We are that bad.f we keep playing like this we will stay in fourth place. IF, omar does nothing to get us out of this spiral we are done. It looks more and mor elike we are done. If the team, with the regulars, could NOT pull it together to win after 2006, and, the collpase of 2007 was not enough to stimulate them, then, this core is done. Time to re-build. Keep Wright and Reyes, every other player is on the block.

  14. Razor Shines says:

Before he last two games, David Wright hit .116 in 11 games (43 AB), combining the .318 he hit in the 9 games before that (44 AB) to say he hit .210 in 20 games to maintain a trend you thought of a month ago is moronic. Stop already.

In fact, he had a 9 for 17 and 13 for 27 stretch in his last 20 games. You combined his 1-23 to keep drilling home your useless trend.

  15. KickedintheMetsiclesAgain says:

Wow, I almost never leave a game (no matter the score) until its over. The last time I had I got burned. It was the day game against Chicago, when the Mets game back late to win.

After that I vowed I would never do so again.

I broke that promise last night. Last night’s game was painful to watch. I ended up leaving during the 7th inning stretch.

  16. jimyager says:

I cant watch this team play, it hurts too much. They are that bad, and, I had such high hopes and expectations, going back to 2006. I cant stand to watch my hopes and dreams crushed time and time again. I cant enjoy watching this team play anymore. Like I said I count on loosing every series we play and If we get one win I am happy. GAME OVER , see you in 2011.

  17. MrMustSeeTv says:

I was at the game last night and it was the worst showing I’ve ever seen live. After last night I’m convinced that this team either has NO confidence or they’ve given up.

    Why?

It’s what you don’t see on TV. In the dugout during their turn at bat, the Mets are like walking zombies. No emotion just walking dead. They look spent and dejected. Nothing and I mean nothing seemed to bring any kind of spark or emotion out of anyone.

At 5 1/2 out, I think it’s over. The cavalry is not coming anytime soon. Mid-August for most of them. By then the Mets may be 10 games out and cemented in 4th place with talk about a new managerial search.
