Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes the Giants
would need to give up more than RHP Jonathan Sanchez to get 2B Freddy Sanchez from the Pirates.
Jonathan Sanchez has made at least 27 starts each of the last three seasons, but is just 15–26 with a 5.21 ERA in his four-year career.
…i have no idea who on the Mets would compare to Jonathan Sanchez, plus another prospect, to create a possible mock deal… i’m thinking Mike Pelfrey is too good, but Jon Niese is too young and un-proven, though that may be OK in a deal like this… you know, i guess the fact that the Mets do not have one of these mid-range, under-contract, semi-established pitcher speaks volumes about a whole other issue, i suppose…
Yesterday, Kovacevic said the Pirates are working hard to trade Sanchez, who’s hitting .316 with a .355 OBP in 304 at bats for the Pirates this season.
Sanchez, 31, won a batting title in 2006, after which he hit .304 in 2007 and .271 last season. He will likely earn $8 million next season, after which he is eligible to be a free agent.
Speaking of trade rumors…
Todd Zolecki of MLB.com believes the Phillies are willing to part with top pitching prospects Kyle Drabek and Jason Knapp, and OF Dominic Brown, in a deal for Blue Jays RHP Roy Halladay.
As Zolecki points out, “Baseball America ranks Brown 17th and Drabek 24th amongst the Top 25 prospects in baseball.”

THIS is what the Mets need (from SI.com’s current MLB Power Rankings:
No player has ripped his own team in public this year the way Mark Reynolds has, but maybe more of them should if the results would be the same. Following a loss in Denver, Reynolds said, “This is the major leagues. You can’t go out there and make three errors and expect to win a game. We looked like the Bad News Bears out there. It’s frustrating as (expletive) out there. It’s to the point where stuff’s got to change. You can give all the rah-rah speeches you want and have all the team meetings you want, yell at guys or whatever, but guys got to give a damn. I don’t really see it. I know I care. I’m out there busting my tail every night. Physical errors are fine, but guys not doing the right thing, guys not being where they’re supposed to be or guys giving up on (at-bats) is unacceptable at any level.” The response to Reynolds tirade? Team president Derrick Hall complimented him via text message and the team ripped off a five-game winning streak, their longest of the season.
The difference is, the Mets would not go on a five game winning streak after something like that.
Couple of issues:
A) We don’t have a leader (including players and manager) who would make such a comment. Jerry The Clown is too busy being friends with the players.
B) We don’t even have rah rah speeches or team meetings. (I heard of 1 team meeting and 1 bus ride…)
But Jerry the Clown gives great post game press conferences and he is gangster.
No, the issue is the Mets would whick a player like that into a closed-door meeting with Ebbetts Fred and Clueless Jeff and be told not to make headlines. We all nkow image and stability are kind with the Wilpons. And Reynolds would have to issue some sort of subtle apology later. You think the Wilpons would compliment someone for doing this? Please.
I think Sanchez could be star-caliber in a bigger market and in the right lineup. That said, no way we even talk to the Pirates because we already have Castillo and Minaya refuses to consider replacing any of his ‘core’ players even if their returns are 50/50 at best.
And if it were up to the media, Halladay would already be a Phillie. I bet the Dodgers get in there, and I also think the Cardinals ar not going to let themselves be outbid. The need to re-up Pujols soon and an ace like Halladay makes them that much more attractive. Plus LaRussa and Duncan have proven they can make gold out of castoffs, so building artound 2 studs is plausible there…they can complement them at will.
whisk, know, king…apologies for the typos.
Sanchez is 31. Hes a quality guy, but with an eye to the future, he’s not someone worth giving up much young talent for.
Matt where do you suppose Freddy would play?
It will take more than that from the Phillies to get Halladay, but I kind of hope they do get him, because if they empty their system they will be in worse position with the farm they we will and I don’t think Halladay will stay there beyond 2010. That being said, the Phillies will have to be considered an elite team for the next year– and if they will be the prohibitive favorites, wouldn’t it be sweet to knock ‘em off as they did to us?
I’m not saying that we should trade for Sanchez, but I think a comparable package for the Mets would be (1) Parnell, (2) Thole and (3) Davis in terms of making up for not having that mid-range, under-contract player.
“you know, i guess the fact that the Mets do not have one of these mid-range, under-contract, semi-established pitcher speaks volumes about a whole other issue, i suppose⦔
yeah… we don’t have any of those guys because we keep trading them away in ill advised deals like this one.
Ok, lets see, where would we be if we had all of these top prospects you speak of, HMMMMM. No Santana or Delgado to start and who would be on the field right now? Thats right nobody you can name. We need Halladay so that we can have a rotation like the Braves of the 90’s, thats how you win 14 staright division’s, on pitching. We cant allow him to go to the Sillies, period. We would be in trouble then, for the next few years. GET ROY , and get over it.
i was talking more about any Sanchez deal than a deal for Halladay. and as much as i would love to have Roy, it will cost us our organizational depth for the next decade.
We don’t have enough to get Roy Haladay period! Especially with atleast half of MLB wanting him. In this case what we should do and what we CAN do are two very different things. That said giving up the farm for a 32 y/o pitcher who would have to be signed to an ungodly extension to even make it worth it is never a good idea. If he was 27 or 28 then fine take the risk, but as I said we don’t have enough to get him to start with.
I see Sanchez pitch alot, and he most resembles Oliver Perez, without the $12 million.
Are you kidding me?????? the guy hasnt had a winning season with double digits and his era is always over 5.00.
Stop being acting like Oliver is some bum because he isnt.
I’m telling you guys if Halladay ends up a Phillie – Between him and Cole Hamels the Mets are in trouble for many years to come. They could have a rotation like the Braves did that rolled off 14 or 15 straight division titles. It would be scary.
Thats if they give Halladay an extension ofcourse but I think you get my point.
The same Cole Hammels that’s 5-5 with a 4.70 ERA this season! The same Cole Hammels who practically has a reserve spot on the DL? If anything his ‘08 season looks more like fluke with each passing day.
No the same Cole Hamels that was dominant down the stretch last season and was the World Series MVP… That Cole Hamels. Hamels era is also influenced by the stadium they play in.. Put him in Citifield every 5th day and it’s definitely different.
Listen I hate the Phillies with a passion but lets be realistic.
Halladay + Hamels would be devasting
I’m sorry, but Hammels has got to pitch an entire season in the big leagues with no DL trips,or missed starts and be sucessful before I jump on his bandwagon .Even Ollie Perez can pitch well in a few big games in one season. I’m sorry, I just don’t think he’s all that. I mean when he’s healthy he’s a good pitcher, but he’s no Ace, that for sure. As for the Phils the chances of them getting Halladay realistically it is pretty slim, the fact that they are going so hard at Pedro speaks to that fact, but hey if they want to burn most of there prospects on a 32 y/o pitcher, then so be it, maybe Hammels and Hallady can be bunk mates on the DL sometime. To me it’s not worth the risk at Halladays age when you figure he’s going to want atleast 4 years on an extension and I just don’t see him wanting to pitch 5 plus years in that bandbox in Philly. So at best the Phils burn their prospects for a full season of Halladay as they would likely be looking to trade him before the deadline next season if not before once they realize he has no intention of staying in Philly. At that point (in the off-season) if the Mets want to burn money instead of farm and team building prospects, then by all means sign him to a realistic deal. Not to another bad contract for his age.
I think you are seriously underrating two very good pitchers. What type of risk would we or anybody be taking with Halladay? He is the best pitcher in baseball and is turning only 33. Hes been dominant in the Al East the best division in baseball over the last ten years. He would probably want a 100 million over 6 or so year extension and a lot of guys on this site wanted Derek Lowe for 16 mil a year for 4 years. Also Halladay isnt a power pitcher – he is similar to a Derek Lowe who normally have long careers cause they dont put much pressure on their arms. And if we could role out Halladay and Santana every 5 days next season or the Phillies can role out Hamels and Halladay its pretty good.
mets may need a big weekend out of church…adam rubin posted the stats for the mets vs the reds 3 starters and he hits all 3 well….granted they are only a handful of ABs but they need someone to have a good weekend along with wright and he has the #s to give hope….i suppose
How about this guy for a late season pickup…
Chapman defected, Cuba says

HAVANA — Cuba has acknowledged the defection of pitcher Aroldis Chapman, a week after he walked away from a tournament in the Netherlands.
The Communist Party daily Granma said Friday that Chapman has hired baseball agent Jaime Torres to represent him, though Torres refuted the report.
“I wish,” Torres told ESPN The Magazine’s Jorge Arangure Jr., when asked if he were representing Chapman. “I haven’t had any contact. I heard rumors that he’s still in Spain but I don’t know what he’s doing.”
Torres said he’s tried to find someone who can get in touch with Chapman, but hasn’t been successful.
Cuba previously had said nothing about Chapman’s defection, despite widespread media coverage in exile-dominated Miami.
The 21-year-old Chapman attracted widespread attention during the World Baseball Classic with a fastball touching 100 mph. He is considered among the top left-handed pitching prospects in the world, and the best pitcher to abandon Cuba since Jose Contreras left in 2002.
why the hell can’t we just promote niese?
Dykstraw, I think they may not have a choice at this point. All we are sayyyyy-ing…is give NIESE a chance!!
If Livan isn’t giving us at least innings then he is useless…Niese will be up after the break. He has to.
wait, i thought we were talking about jon sanchez, but freddy sanchez is an even worse idea. if we were ready to cut ties with castillo, we should have done it when hudson was a FA or should do it when he is again a FA. if not, we have the same problem. why pick up a guy who we don’t have room for, and if we did, we could do a better job in the offseason?
I agree on your point about Freddy Sanchez, not too mention the Pirates seem to want alot for him.
I think we will see him after the All Star break. No sense to do it now with only 3 games to go. Plus, they are giving Nieve one last shot.
Freddy Sanchez is a nice little player. But trading Niese for him when we are going nowhere would be monumentally stupid.
Meanwhile, with Argenis Reyes probably going back down for Pagan beware of Jerry getting starts for Tatis at 2B or SS this weekend. Wouldn’t shock me at all if he got a start at each. Would make me ill, but wouldn’t shock me.
Like I said yesterday Chief if Jerry sticks to his word and doesn’t start Tatis the next three games I’ll eat my hat! lol But atleast we are getting someone back from the DL
Didn’t think it could get any worse? Jayson Werth replaces Carlos Beltran for the All-Star game.
Who cares, let the philly players get wore out! Our guys need all the rest they can get! Frankly I’d like to see Johan miss it as well. The only reason I want K-rod to go is frankly, he needs the work lol.
You know what the sign of a team in trouble is? When the cry baby fans start to blame the Manager for everything. First it was Bobby V, then Art Howe, Willie and now Jerry, give it a break. Now the same fans want Bobbt V back? The manager has very little to do with it. The lazy, no guts, no heart players are to blame. Fine them everytime they make a dumb mistake and bench them. We cant play any worse. When LC, or anybody, drops a rotuine pop fly, bench him, when they dont touch a base, bench him, and fine them as well. When they dont work the count and swing at garbage, or hit into DP’s all the time. DO SOMETHING!! This team plays like a little league team, and, a bad one at that. But, your right, FIRE JERRY.
I actual never wanted Bobby V gone and would love to see him replace Manual as soon as possible
I don’t think the manager has to much to do with anything besides some crucial decisions here and there that could effect a game but i wouldn’t mind seeing Bobby V back either. We got a whole lot more with a whole lot less with him at the helm.
You know… after 88 games last year, we were 41-43, just one game better than we are this year. And we were 4.5 games out of first, just one game bette than we are this year.
And we likely have reinforcements coming from the DL after the All-Star break.
Starting in game 87 last year, we rolled off 10 wins in a row. Maybe?
Only can happen if we get these guys back and that’s a big if bc there still is no timetable for any of them which screams PR move.
I agree I think Beltran, Reyes, are alot farther off then they are letting on. And frankly I think the FO put Delgado on the field briefly to give the fan base just enough hope to keep buying tickets, there is no way he’s anywhere approaching ready. It would be nice, but I doubt it.
last year we had high potential guys who were underperforming. when they started performing, we predictably started winning. so while last year was much more frustration, it was much less hopeless.
this year, three high potential guys are hurt they have been replaced by low potential guys. so it really takes some serious magical thinking to think that murphy, evans, tatis and sheffield are going to start playing way over their heads and carry this team anywhere.
Perhaps if Jerry would leave Tatis on the bench where he belongs, he might get more out of Murphy and Evans, that not to say they can carry the team, they aren’t ready for that. But I think we have a much better chance to win with Tatis on the bench, and consistency in the field and in the lineup.
John Maine would probably be the most contract/performance comparable pitcher to Sanchez. Perez was until he became a FA.
Of course he would have to get back on the field first…
