Prior to today’s game, Jerry Manuel told reporters that John Maine threw a side session this afternoon in St. Lucie, ‘and could be back as early as next month.’
…Angel Pagan today… maine could be back within 30 days… J.J. Putz said yesterday he is ahead of schedule, as is Carlos Delgado, who the team is hoping will return towards the end of August… and Billy Wagner is likely to return by the end of next month, as well… i don’t know what to expect from Carlos Beltran or Jose Reyes, but that list above would go a long way in making up six games in the standings…

Awesome another month of Livan Hernandez while the Phillies add Pedro and possibly Halladay…
Church traded for Francoeur I like the trade a lot..
And Omar finally made me happy by saying he is going to continue to look outside for moves…thank God!
I thought Delgado was going to be back at the beginning to middle of August?
it’s a difference of six games today
it will be larger after 30 more days of suck
yea especially when the Phillies are now playing the Pirates (who kicked our @ss by the way cause we stink) and are getting Ibanez back (another great non signing by Omar)
oh please, if he signed a 36 year old latino player he would have been killed for signing an over the hill “brother” as it goes by more than half the fans, nobody could have seen Ibanez doing what he has in philly.
I agree there was nothing in his past history that would suggest he was capable of the feats he has accomplished! In short Philly got lucky! No way Omar or anyone else could have forseen that. The Mets were in on him, but given his prior production Philly paid too much for him, I can’t fault Omar for not overpaying like Alanta did with Lowe (look at him now….not pretty).like I said they got lucky. Also , now that he’s been injured there is no guarantee that what has been a career year for him will continue.
Look at his numbers in Seattle which is also a pitcher friendly park – He’s had a very good consistent career and now that he is in a hitters park his numbers are on steroids. And I wasn’t crazy about Ibanez but I did want a big bat in the corner outfield during the outfield and we didnt get it.
If we have to wait until the end of August for everyone to come back we will DEFINTELY be atleast 10 out … No doubt
pffft…6 out, by then we will be 15 out if Beltran and Reyes are still gone and IMO Reyes is done for the season
thats why i hope omar makes a deal for a bat in left matt….i know ur not for making a big splash but i feel if the core players come back, add in a guy like a holliday or dunn(actually seems like holliday is gunna be easier to get) that might be enough to win…assuming wagner and putz…maine and ollie perform…
I agree it would definitely keep us in contention until all the other guys are back.
That’s alot of ” if they performs” to burn prospects on, for a rental who may or may not make a difference. The chances of Holiday signing an entension with Boras as his agent are worse than slim and none! So what’s the point of trading for him? Save the prospects and sign him in the offseason if you so desire, but right now it makes no sense.
Agreed…there really is no answer. Trading is a waste and with this current team we will be 15 games under and 10+ out by august 15th.
Two things need to happen IMO
1. The organization comes out and says what it is gonna do. Either it is gonna be creative and try to plug holes to keep the ship afloat or it says we are standing pat and if we go down we go down.
2. There only chip in the trade market is money bc we all know (and hope) they won’t trade our top prospects bc that would be dumb. So, if you want to stay afloat til this guys come back in hopes that we have a shot THIS year then you have to go get someone like a Rios and bite the financial bullet and get a guy like Felipe Lopez. They won’t cost you prospect but will cost you money. Are they enough to keep this thing afloat idk but its all they can do to TRY to save THIS season. IMO.
Kendog I think that’s the problem. The organization tells their fans nothing cause they want to continue selling tickets. I wish they would say somethign so I dont have to come on this site everyday and b*tch! haha
lol, yeah yeah i know, its just really frustrating.
The ifs, ands + buts are too big. the time table on these guys keeps changing, if Delgado is gone until the end of August forget, especially with Beltran and Reyes nowhere to be found.
I have given Minaya and the Wilpons the benefit of the doubt over the last four years more often than not, they simply put their heads in the sand hoping beyond hope this team would stay afloat. When Beltran went down they either needed to be active or admit this seasn was a wash due to injury. Not keep shooting them up with cortizone like it matters.
I love how Maine being back by “Next Month” is good news. Originally he was supposed to miss just 2 starts. When these guys are back in the majors tell me about it, (the organization, not you matt) otherwise i assume these guys are out for the year. (which i am willing to bet is more likely)
yay, by the end of august we’ll only be 10 out!
Ryan Church traded, according to tweet from MLB Trade Rumors.
no word yet to where or for whom
francoeur on the braves…good trade
What the heck? Why
What????
Frenchy sucks. He’s terrible. I guess we’ve just given up on the season.
This makes no sense at all.
I agree WTF???
Then why would Church be in the starting lineup?
The only thing that makes sense is Francour is a RH bat and has shown more power than Church albeit very little more this year.
The sooner we all come to terms that Reyes is out for the year the better off well be. Its a little shady that there is no time table, not even a hint of when he might return.
The Wilpon’s want to sell tickets. They know fans will lose all hope if this was announced, and most likely give up.
Call me crazy……….
Wow Matt, you must really be in a good mood today. In your Q&A your answer to ‘do you think we have a chance this season’ is ‘I do’, now all this talk about guys getting healthy and making up a 6 game deficit. What’s with all the optimism, did you see that Phils and Dodgers series?
Sorry to rain on your parade, but all those guys mentioned are a month away at least, and in that said month if we are still 6 games back then I guess the Phillies have a tough month ahead of them they don’t know about.
