Adam Rubin of the Daily News discusses the current state of the Mets, their medical staff, and their farm system.
Rubin notes that prior to their victory against the Reds last night it was the first time the “New Mets” had been five games under .500 since the five game losing streak to start the 2005 season.

Great article regarding the state of the Mets. Jeff Wilpon and Omar Minaya have absolutely destroyed this team maybe to the point that it would take years to fix, especially the farm system.
To add to this article…. ESPN just went threw the worst signings of 2009… And Congratulations Omar Minaya … Oliver Perez top the list!
I’ve been screaming about the training staff forever, finally someone writes a story about all their failings. How Ray Ramirez is still employed can only be answered by how these guys were hired to begin with. They came on the cheap, they are yes men to upper management like Bernazard, and firing them would cost more money. The Yankees fired their trainer after one month last year because of a few injuries they thought suspect. How many years does Ray Ramirez get to put our team in the hospitals over and over?
Well, keep in mind that from the sounds of it even if Ray did want to do the right thing with the players, it seems like folks from higher than him are failing to heed the advice / warnings of team doctors. Sadly I think this FO has more of selling tickets on their mind than the long term health of the players. I for one am glad that the players association is starting to raise a stink (albeit a small one!)
I first picked up on this in 2006 when the Mets wouldn’t commit initially to DLing Pedro and were even coy until the last minute that he wouldn’t start opening day despite hardly pitching at all in ST. And of course Pedro would have the shoulder surgery that would change his career for good, maybe because he kept pitching on a sore heel/hip what have you.
If the injury issues were just a 2009 thing, I could see people being understanding about this type of thing, but this has been a very distinctive thing since Omar took over…. and I think it’s further enhanced by the team selling more tickets because of expectations/stadium nostalgia/new stadium. So thus, it all goes back to the Wilpons, like it forever will keep doing until they decide their Madoff loses were too much to continue owning a baseball team.
That’s a damning indictment of the organization. It’s pretty clear that there is no quick fix and we can’t (and the Wilpons won’t) spend our way out of this. Omar, Bernazard and their cronies need to go. They’ve been at the helm for 5 years, have the highest payroll in the NL and we’re going backwards fast.
I don’t know who, but we must hire the right guy to replace them with a clear view and philisophy. No one can be deemed untouchable. We need to stop dreaming that we’re a serious playoff contender because we’re not and we won’t be turned into one with a FA signing or 2.
Don’t get me wrong I think it’s time Ray goes, but they just gutted the Medical staff a few years ago and where has it gotten them! I honestly think it has more to do with the players being pushed when they shouldn’t be by folks alot higher than Ray Ramirez! I mean if alot of injuries happen once, fine, but if you gut the medical staff and it happens yet again you have to ask yourself “Are we to believe that 2 different sets of some of the best sports medicine guys in the business keep getting it wrong?” I believe that on many occasions Ray and others are being told Do what you have to to keep warm bodies on the field “we don’t care what it takes”
Right, as I indicated, these guys are cheap yes men to upper management, who wants their stars in the lineup, not sitting with nagging injuries. Those nagging injuries get pushed and look what happens.
WOW!! That’s all I can say is wow. FIRE EVERYONE!! I cannot believe that the Wilpons aren’t at least a little embarassed by this. Good Lord, if I were Jeff Wilpon, not only would I fire Omar Minaya and Tony Bernazard, I would RUIN both. I’d make absolutely sure they never worked in baseball again. How many times does someone have to screw it up or get it wrong before you get relieved of your job. “Earth to Fred and Jeff Wilpon” this is not the 90’s. The game has changed and people like Theo Epstein are making mincemeat of your pathetic organization. It is now time to take your little ego’s, put them in a box, put them on a shelf, and we’ll get back to that later. You just built a new stadium and you were to wrapped up in yourself and had your nose too far up Minaya and Bernazard’s @$$ to see the whole thing was falling apart, Great job guys, great job. How in the hell did you make it to the place you are at Fred?
One more thing Nelson Doubleday, where are you?
That was one of the most disheartening articles I’ve read in a long time. That was painful. I’ve been moving into the fire Minaya column slowly for a while now but that article might have put me over the edge. Its one thing to make bad trades but the farm system and the medical inconsistencies…what exactly does Minaya and Bernazard do well?
As horrible as it sounds for diehard mets fans like myself they would probably be better off completely falling apart the rest of the year and having the Wilpons clean house, get rid of all of management. I can’t believe its come to this
If you’re moving into the fire Minaya column please leave some room for me. I’m afraid you’re right, I think the fans would be better off completely falling apart and cleaning house. I guess the saying “the only way to get rich quick is to get rich slowly” applies to baseball clubs as well.
*fans would be better off is the team completely fell apart*
*if* it’s one thing to screw up, it’s another when you screw up the correction. I think the Minaya/Bernazard way is starting to get to me.
I was one of the most passionate Minaya defenders on this site for a long time. For me, I always wanted to reserve judgement on some of his trades and signings, and to this day I think some of the deals that get slammed are a result of Monday-morning quarterbacking, but at the same time, I think the downward spiral of this year has exposed all of Minaya/Berenzard’s shortcomings … too much reliance on a small group of core players, not acquiring or developing any secondary players that could produce in a meaningful way (where would the Phils be without guys like Werth, Victorino, Madson etc), a developmental philosophy with the farm system that rushes players and has produced nothing but false expectations and a number of pitchers and hitters that can’t get over the hump to be productive major leaguers, poor drafts, good, but not great international signings, poor medical staff, poor coaching hires, on and on and on….
Just a great job by Rubin.
Glad the media is finally coming around to what a lot of us have known for a long time. Under Minaya, this organization has been an absolute joke. No player development, no continuity, no long-term plan.
But hey, we got a guy with a .282 on-base percentage, so all is fixed!
