The Mets close out their three game series today against the Reds at Citi Field.
Angel Pagan will once again lead off and be in center field, followed in order with Luis Castillo, David Wright, Gary Sheffield, Jeff Francoeur, Daniel Murphy, Brian Schneider, and Alex Cora.
Mike Pelfrey (6-4, 4,52 ERA) will start for the Mets. Pelfrey is coming off a poor start on Tuesday against the Dodgers and he will be looking to return to the form that earned him a victory in Milwaukee when he pitched 7 2/3 innings of six-hit ball. In his last ten starts, Pelfrey is 2-4 with a 4.34 ERA.
Aaron Harang (5-8, 3.89 ERA) will start for the Reds. In his last ten starts, the Reds are 6-4 although he is 2-4 over that span. On Opening Day he threw five innings against the Mets and allowed a run on seven hits and was on the short end of a 2-1 duel against Johan Santana.

Do my eyes decieve me, or is this actually 2 days in a row with the same lineup???!!! (Exception being catcher, but its a day/night, so is expected). Maybe Jerry is turning a new page in his own book and actually using the consistency he preaches!
Same of not, this lineup actually looks respectable on paper, and that alone is progress.
Cause USELESS Ryan Church isn’t in it.
Anyone notice that Ryan Church left 4 men on base last night…. That a boy Church do to them what you did to us!
Frenchy 2 Church 0 LOL
Yeah, I saw that, evidently he gave a couple a pretty good ride but was robbed. (Atleast that’s what the boys at TAlking CHop were saying, I didn’t see it. But with that said I’ll take 2 runs over a long shot to the outfield anyday! I won’t get on Church too much though, I think he would have been fine if Jerry would have just let him relax. In the end I think both players just needed a fresh start. And the fact that having F-Core here means that Jerry has one less platoon to screw up and obviously as we’ve seen today bring a little consistency to the lineup card which has been missing for some time now. Man if we can get F-Core pointed in the right direction, and get either Delgado or Beltran back ( better yet both) we just might have something!
Yea but giving a ball a good ride in Colorado is different at Citi Field. In Colorado the ball goes to the warning track and looks better than it was.. At Citifield its a routine fly ball.
Bottom line he left 4 on base like hes done ovwr and over again here…
I agree, you can’t argue that.
That is fantastic analysis. Let’s use a one-game sample size to judge the Church-Francouer trade.
Have you changed your mind since today’s game started with Francouer swinging at the first pitch (as usual) and weakly grounding out to first, then meekly popping out to right field?
Nah he lined a single to centerfield…
And what I will judge is Church’s 2 home runs and PATHETIC 22 RBI’s which isn’t a big difference from a Luis Castillo like production… So I could careless what you think “dude” cause I’ll take a guy whose hit over 100 RBI’s twice in his young career over a platoon outfielder anyday of the week.
‘Zo, my bad if I was harsh there.
Trust me, I know Church stinks. But Francoeur is even worse. This reminds me of when the Mets traded for Church and everyone was saying “Oh, he’s only 28, if he stays healthy, finally playing in a good lineup, he’ll be an All-Star.” When all he was was a mediocre player.
Same thing with Francouer. And his acquisition sums up all the worst traits of Minaya. Fixating on something that happened 3 years ago, ignoring all current evidence and being flat-out ignorant — “maybe the best defensive RF in baseball”????
no problem man.. I hear ya and I agree with you but I do think this team needed to do something and this I guess is a decent start.
I completely agree with you about Church and Omar.
I’m surprised there’s been no mention on the blog this morning about the indictment of an article Adam Rubin published in the Daily News about the ineptitude and potential trouble the Mets medical staff is in by the player’s association. Rubin, I believe, is one of the more fair reporters covering a New York sports team and I think has resisted taking the cheap shots the rest of the press has taken. But the article itself is absolutely sobering about the long-term prospects of this franchise under the Minaya/Berenzard regime.
Great article regarding the state of the Mets. Jeff Wilpon and Omar Minaya have absolutely destroyed this franchise maybe to the point that it would take years to fix, especially the farm system. Many Met fans, including myself, have been screaming about the way this organization is run from Ray Ramirez the head trainer to Jeff Wilpon the COO – I’m glad the stories have reached the public for all to see. Omar Minaya and Jeff Wilpon deserve to be embarrassed.
To add to this article…. ESPN just went threw the worst signings of 2009… And Congratulations Omar Minaya … Oliver Perez top the list!
Well atleast Ollie topped the list at something! lol
well, since you guys re-posted your comments too…:)
I’ve been screaming about the training staff forever, finally someone writes a story about all their failings. How Ray Ramirez is still employed can only be answered by how these guys were hired to begin with. They came on the cheap, they are yes men to upper management like Bernazard, and firing them would cost more money. The Yankees fired their trainer after one month last year because of a few injuries they thought suspect. How many years does Ray Ramirez get to put our team in the hospitals over and over?
I keep thinking maybe if there’s a clean sweep in the FO things could eventually move in a better direction, but the common denominator of the last 8 years has been the Wilpons. While I understand clamoring for an ownership change in this day in age is fruitless I will be absolutely shocked if this franchise ever wins a World Series with them at the helm. They could put Theo and Beane in charge of this roster, and they would still find a way to screw it up.
Agreed…I cant stand the Wilpons…never did.
I sit here at my laptop in utter disbelief that Jerry Manuel actually put out for a sceond consecutive day the same lineup (save for the catching position which is obviously expected)
Hopefully we can pull off another victory and head into the break with some momentum.
As for the article, it was a great read, but very depressing. The scout’s report on Triple A Buffalo should be enough to get everyone fired in the organization.
And now I know why sometimes the players go out and it seems like they aren’t giving 100%, it’s because the organization doesn’t give a crap about them. All the doctors telling the Mets brass that players like Beltran, Maine, etc., shouldn’t be playing and all the team does is say give them a cortizone shot, they will get better. If I were a professional athlete and my team treated me like that I would just go about my business hoping not to get hurt and when my contract was up get as far away as possible.
But will the Wilpons do anything, absolutely not. Fans should just boycott games until something changes. Wouldn’t it be great if a walkout was staged? That would be great, we the fans have the greatest voice and maybe we should do something about this.
This report is also why Ive been saying if you could bring in a proven commodity that would be with us for a while for a few unproven and over rated prospects you should do so… Ie. Halladay and Rios.
Well we won one game in this series, so, if the pattern hold, we wll lose today. We cant wn more than 1 game in a row,
Interesting…. when Beltran come back.
You then have 5 guys (actually more if you count Reed and Tatis), but at least three that you might want in there …
what do you do with Pagan, Sheffield and F-Core?
F-Core I don’t think will go anyhere ’till atleast 2011. Because at age 25 as he said it’s likely the best years are ahead of him. Sheffield is a tough one, because we might actually be able to get something for him before the deadline, but I don’t know that that will happen. After the deadline, I think he’ll leave in the offseason as now, that he has proven (again) that he can still hit an AL team might have greater use for him. Tatis I think his time as a met is done. Somehow I gotta believe they will hang on to Pagan if he stays healthy consistently, the guy definetly has talent and is frankly built for Citi field there is no question about that. But then again knowing this organization they will trade him for some has been which I think would be a big mistake!
Pagan would be a great guy to have as a 4th OF next year. Pagan has historically been better from the left side, but this year is better from the right. I think they need to see more of him to really figure that out. Reed could be expendable if Pagan hits well lefty.
Sheffield is movable if they fall out of it too far. If that makes Evans/Reed the LF for the rest of the season then so be it, at that point.
Francouer’s best years are ahead of him? I assume you’re basing this on the fact he’s regressed statistically for the last four years.
And the Braves always like trading players on the cusp of stardom to division rivals.
His “regressed” statistics as you would call them are MUCH better than any 1 season of Church’s. But I guess you would expect Church being already 30 years old to get better????
Why it is too early to give up on the season:
Colorado Rockies
June 3rd 20-32 15 GB in the division and 9.5 back in the WC
26-9 since and have gained 6.5 games back in both.
Today is important. 3 games under vs 5 games under at the break..
I got a good feeling about this one.
UGH! everytime I have that feeling I end up grabbing the TUMS and the 6 pack by the 4th inning! lol That said, LGM!
That’s why you have to start drinking at the first pitch, like I have. If the Mets do bad, it doesn’t hurt as much. But if the Mets do good, as they’re doing right now, it’s that much better.
And to add to that, I’ve got Harang on my fantasy team. I don’t give a care on that one. Let’s Go Mets! Alex Cora drives one in!
No roster move today?
I guess its always good to have a 10 man bullpen for the last game before a 3 day break…
Four men on the bench today? Brilliant!
Why would you waste a move, just for the sake of making a move?
Why start the clock on someone, or chance losing a player to waivers?
Leave well enough alone, I say.
Excellent point! Hopefully Omar will start managing the roster with some more common sense involved.
Decent inning by Pelf, but he’s got to stop throwing so many FB, mix it up a little. Let’s see the hook once in awhile.
Atta Boy David!
Good inning by Pelf!
And that Ladies and Gentlemen is how you add on! LGM
Yet again, we add on!
7 run lead, 1-2 the count and you walk the leadoff guy! Unbelievable! If nothing else Schneider should know enough to just let them hit it especially at Citi with a 7 run lead!
Ugh!, that makes 2!
Amazing 2 walks 2 runs thus far……….funny how that works!
This inning is typical Pelf. Cruising along and he’ll let one hiccup sideline him.
Dear offense: Thanks for finally giving us enough of a cushion that we have a chance to survive a meltdown.
DITTO!
Another good example why Pelfrey isn’t a number 2 pitcher YET
He’s just not a mentally tough enough pitcher.
Well, u forget he was just in college a couple of years ago! Schneider should know enough to just sit behind the middle of the plate and make him throw strikes!
This is a recurrent problem for him. He’ll cruise through the first few innings. Then, he’ll hit a bump, a walk or an error, in the 4th or 5th and he’ll not be able to get through that inning without significant damage. It will snowball in that inning. Yet, in the next inning, he’ll cruise again.
Watch him cruise the next two innings.
Called it on Pelf.
Whew! thank God that’s over!
Franky’s hits today were both solid. Two games in, we like ‘em.
bottom of the seventh is must see TV w/ the apple not working for the second HR
APPLE APPLE APPLE APPLE
Only the Mets…
A standing “O” for The Apple.
I am afraid that the Apple is a perfect example of the Mets season.
After Tatis HR, the Apple did not rise. No matter how much the fans rooted and chanted the Apple did not rise. Finally at the end of the inning, the Apple rose. Little too late for it to matter.
Same as our season. Mets fans are chanting for more effort. No matter how they cheer the team winning percentage remains dismal. When the DL is cleared and everyone returns and the Mets start to win, it will be too late and not really matter (at least as far as Mets post-season aspirations go).
According to Gary Cohen, the new apple needs 45 seconds to recharge after it has been raised and lower in order to rise again. There wasn’t enough time between the 2 homers.
wow, those add-on runs are even bigger now. If not for them, tieing run would be at the plate.
You spoke too soon,
However I am confident that the pen will NOT blow it, unlike previous years.
In the end, it’s a win.
well, I’m glad that roller coaster ride is over…
now I can relax for a few days and settle down…
no Tums for me…..
Are you kidding? I am still fearful of KRod blowing a save in the All-star game, or D Wright dropping a popup. Sure, the game doesn’t count in the standings, but it would be grounds for more Mets mockery. This season, not even the all-star game will be easy…
